Deshaun Watson Postgame Press Conference After Win vs Ravens
Transcript
00:00 I mean, yeah, it's a big win on the road against a very, very great team.
00:05 One of the top teams in the league, one of the best defenses in the league, and better than ever.
00:10 I think it was overall a great opportunity, not just for me, but the whole offense.
00:16 But this team, too. Slow start in the first half, set the clip in the space, you know,
00:22 I give Brady, for Brady's credit, they capitalized on it.
00:25 But the second half, we didn't do it back down. We came out, fired, put the offensive,
00:30 put a big drive on it, started with the O-line, running behind them, and then getting the ball
00:35 to the receivers and catching runs. So it was definitely a big moment for us.
00:40 And we just got to keep going.
00:41 Deshawn, can you talk about how you had to overcome an ankle injury from the first half,
00:46 and you just came out maybe even more focused and locked in, 14-14, big drives,
00:51 and pulled this thing out?
00:53 Yeah, that's the thing. You just got to start off that way.
00:56 We didn't start off that way, but it was a 60-minute game, and when I came in,
01:02 I didn't give it up yet. I just wanted to make sure I locked in, and this was going to be
01:07 a big moment for myself. I didn't want to let my teammates down.
01:10 I knew that I had a lot more on my shoulders than what I should have, because we threw
01:17 ourselves in the hole. But I was ready and prepared for that moment.
01:21 I didn't fear anything. I just focused on my play at the time, and that's what we did.
01:26 You remember the O-line. Do you think in the end they just wore down Ravens defense?
01:31 I'm going to say those guys, they won the pitch, and that's what they did on that last drive,
01:37 the last two drives, really. And we just kept plugging, kept plugging.
01:41 And they knew that if they had the opportunity to run the ball or finish the D-line
01:46 from the other side, they'd win.
01:48 How do you feel right now with your ankle? You've got another big, huge game coming up,
01:53 including on Sunday. How are you feeling, and are you going to be okay?
01:56 Yeah, I'll be fine. Right now, I'm not feeling well, but I'll be fine. I'll be ready to go
02:02 whatever time it is, Monday at 1 o'clock, or Sunday, sorry. It's 1 o'clock, or whenever.
02:08 I'll be ready to go and ready for that opportunity.
02:12 Did you have any questions at any point during this game that you'd be able to stay in
02:16 and continue to finish?
02:18 No, I didn't have any questions. I just came in just to get re-taped and whatever we needed to do,
02:22 and I was going back up and finish. I wasn't getting pulled out.
02:25 Do you know which play it happened? Was it the last drive, play on the sideline?
02:29 For my ankle?
02:30 Yeah.
02:31 No, it was the one red zone where Twelney had top and he pulled behind.
02:38 We got rolled up on him. So he just got rolled up on me.
02:42 I should apologize. I apologize. It's my bad, bro.
02:46 I should have checked on him and things like that.
02:48 I didn't run that high, so.
02:50 But, yeah, it happened when I played right before the foul.
02:53 What does this say about this football team, all of you guys?
02:56 The grit, the fight, the heart and soul to keep coming back and back and back
03:01 and overcoming everything that you did in this game?
03:03 Yeah, it's about us. It's not one individual. It's not the quarterback.
03:07 It's not the safety. It's about us. It's a team game.
03:10 And we all came together and said we had to.
03:12 When we came in this locker room, the guys came in and said let's flush it.
03:16 It's a new 30 minute.
03:18 And then, you know, we got to leave everything out there a little bit.
03:20 We got to make sure that we take it one play at a time.
03:23 We can't press and try to do anything.
03:25 I think that's where it actually started was just not everyone pressing.
03:30 Just taking one play at a time.
03:31 And I think I caught up in the first half trying to press, trying to get everything back.
03:36 And we're down 14. So we settled down.
03:41 How hard is it to shake off the way that game starts?
03:44 I know what happened at this retreat, but that interception on the road.
03:48 It's tough. I was looking at AVP.
03:52 Again, again, again.
03:57 I told him in the 14th minute we played 6-4 trying to throw over him.
04:02 David was to throw, and then we played.
04:05 I guess it happened. It shouldn't happen.
04:08 I don't want it to happen.
04:09 But it was just like that whole drive, that whole time.
04:14 But we just had to shake through.
04:16 Like I said before, we pressed a little bit, trying to get everything back, trying to get some goal balls.
04:21 But we came in the second half, regrouped, and we could have used that gap.
04:25 Deshaun, Browns fans don't really know you all that well yet.
04:31 Your Browns teammates are still kind of getting to know you.
04:34 Is this who you are and what you're all about to come back and help pull out a victory like this?
04:40 Of course. I can deal with the adversity. I can deal with the noise.
04:44 I can deal with all that. All that stuff comes and goes. It's part of football.
04:47 But in this game, in this business, it's hard.
04:50 You have ups and downs, and you've got to deal with it.
04:53 You can deal with it and get those up to flows and do whatever you can to get that win, no matter how you win,
04:58 especially on a divisional match like this.
05:02 As long as we get the W, that's all that matters.
05:05 Yeah, I just lock in on that.
05:07 Deshaun, you've got multiple receivers involved here in the second half, Elijah, Omari, David.
05:14 Are you starting to feel more comfortable with everybody across the board in terms of the passing game
05:19 because you're getting more of the consistent reps now, again, in practice?
05:24 Yeah, but sometimes it depends on how the game is formed.
05:28 Sometimes teams try to take away two. Sometimes teams try to take away a cheat.
05:34 It just depends on how the scheme is and where the ball goes, depending on where the play is going.
05:40 So, yeah, I'm getting comfortable with everyone.
05:43 We started off good early in the season, six weeks without going to those guys,
05:49 and now I'm bouncing back and two good wins.
05:52 So it's coming along. We've just got to keep pushing.
05:54 Deshaun, two more. We've got to wrap.
05:56 During the week when Callahan was solving that O-line problem, were you wondering, "Can this really work?"
06:03 No. I never doubted Callahan or the guys in that locker room.
06:07 I didn't care who was going to be out there.
06:09 I don't think anybody on the team cared about who was going to be out there.
06:13 What we knew was that the person that was going to be out there was going to be prepared and ready to go and fight,
06:17 and that's what those guys did.
06:18 Deshaun, you referenced the rough first half versus the second half.
06:23 It seemed like they were coverage-wise just doing some different things.
06:26 What did you notice about the way they were playing you guys in the second half that allowed you to have so much success?
06:30 Yeah, they did a good job of opening the show.
06:33 Whenever they wanted to go one high, they held it, made us check out a certain place.
06:38 Then they rotated on the snap.
06:40 They did a good job of doing that.
06:42 In the second half, I just trusted my eyes and trusted my reading of what I saw in the first half.
06:47 I got us to play as that can capitalize and get the ball into the receiver's hands and make them talk.
06:52 We played it to their hands in the first half and the second half.
06:56 We wanted them to play it to our hands, and we did take the pace.
06:59 I didn't know it was going to be this.
