00:00 And now, we will talk about the temporary release of former Senator Laila de Lima after her early retirement.
00:05 We have here with us this afternoon, former Senator Laila de Lima. Good morning and welcome to Balitang Hali.
00:13 Good morning to all of you here at GMA and to all of the listeners.
00:20 Ma'am, good morning. We would like to ask how you are.
00:23 Good morning, Connie.
00:25 How are you waking up this morning?
00:29 I'm awake and I'm free.
00:31 You know, I didn't sleep much. I slept for only two hours.
00:37 I was still getting used to it.
00:39 I miss my detention cell and my cats there.
00:45 Really, I was getting used to it. It's a totally new environment for me.
00:51 So I had a hard time sleeping. I slept for only two hours.
00:57 Yes, and of course, this is a welcome development.
01:00 But did you expect that you will finally be able to get a chance in your last case?
01:07 I always hoped. I've been clinging to hope because that's all I could do.
01:13 You know, when you're someone deprived of liberty, all you have to do is cling to hope.
01:20 Because if you don't cling to hope, then there's no sense existing.
01:26 So my hope is there. It doesn't disappear.
01:30 Although, during President Duterte's time, I know that I was deprived of liberty.
01:38 When the administration changed, then I really, there was really hope that justice will find its way.
01:46 Although, it didn't happen immediately. It took also one year.
01:52 But the hope is there. And I've never, never, ever lost faith.
01:58 My faith has never wavered. That one day, I'll be vindicated.
02:02 Yes. We're saying that your release is just temporary, ma'am.
02:07 But of course, the first thing on your list, as you mentioned in your interview yesterday,
02:14 is to see your 91-year-old mother.
02:17 Yes.
02:18 Other than that, what else is on your list?
02:21 Well, I have to really spend a few days, private quality time with my mom and my family.
02:29 And then I'll be really pondering over my options because I have several options.
02:36 One is to return to law practice and then return to teaching, to law school.
02:44 And whatever other options I have, but always, whatever would be the next calling that I'll be indulging in,
02:56 my advocacies are there. I will not stop helping my core advocacies.
03:06 But if you really can use the "justice" you're asking for in the end,
03:13 are you also thinking that you will be the one to file a case against those who said that you are involved in the allegations about you?
03:25 There's always a possibility. It's not that I will just forget what I did.
03:36 But at this point, I don't want to dwell on it first.
03:41 But it's part of my vindication. It's part of attaining a complete and true justice
03:50 because everything has been wrong from the start.
03:55 And then it took more than six years of my life. These are prime years of my life.
04:01 If we go to the lawyer's lingo, the damage done to me is incapable of pecuniary estimation.
04:21 These are still six long years of lost opportunities, of lost milestones in my personal, family, and even in the history of our country.
04:36 Although I will not stop helping my advocacies, but it's different if you're really free to fight.
04:47 Senator Bato de la Rosa said that although he respects the court's decision,
04:52 he wonders why the evidence was so weak.
04:57 If it's really weak, why did it take six years before you were able to appeal?
05:02 What is your reaction to that, ma'am?
05:04 You know, that's also the struggle of our legal team.
05:16 My legal team was doing its best to prove to the court that the charges are baseless.
05:23 But we have to go through the process and that's really one of the loopholes of our system.
05:31 We have to go through a process that most of the time, it really took so long for the process to come to an end.
05:40 I was charged with three cases. Those three cases were gradually reduced.
05:48 Although the third case is not yet complete or completely over.
05:55 But you know, I stand by my innocence up to this very day. I stand by my innocence.
06:02 And I'm pretty certain that I will be fully vindicated in due time.
06:08 Ma'am, the former Justice Secretary, Vitalyano Aguirre, said that they stand by their case filing.
06:15 But they said that the bail is welcome because she has suffered enough.
06:20 What is your reaction to this?
06:22 Well, it's good for him. It's nice for him to say that.
06:25 At least, she recognized that I suffered enough. I suffered more than enough.
06:30 I hope he does realize it and I hope he's sincere in saying that.
06:34 He knows the role that he has played in all of this.
06:39 That's all I can say.
06:42 All right. Thank you very much for your time in our newsroom, ma'am.
06:48 You're welcome. My pleasure.
06:51 I hope you will be re-elected. Thank you for your time.
06:56 Thank you.
06:57 This is former Senator Laila de Lima.
