00:00 The Christmas markets have officially opened in Newcastle and this year they have once
00:07 again expanded to Old Eldon Square. Featuring some local food companies and some local businesses
00:13 from across the region, the Christmas markets have almost everything for a bit of festive
00:18 shopping. Some of your favourite local restaurants have also set up huts to give people a quick
00:23 taste of what they have to offer. Moose and Wirt has also returned to Grey Street this
00:28 year with their teepee and mulled wine. With so much to see, we spoke to just a few of
00:33 the stallholders to see what they thought about this year's markets.
00:39 So Paper Starlights is a company that started in 1996 and it's a collaboration of two families
00:46 across in India who are making these beautiful hand paper, hand screen printed and hand cut
00:53 paper lanterns. We are from East Bouldon in Tyne and Wear. Me and my sisters, we established
00:59 the business back in November of 2020. Something that we've been very passionate about, a more
01:07 sustainable approach to living and of course we had a lot of time on our hands with lockdown
01:13 in place so that's when the wheels got in motion.
01:18 The company is just a family business and it's owned by my wife Julia. Well in fact,
01:29 I've been a beekeeper for many years and I used to help a beekeeper from my home town
01:35 which was Woolsington near Newcastle Airport. From this high I used to help a beekeeper
01:41 in the summer holidays and basically I learnt the craft of beekeeping and then when I became
01:49 a teenager, not so cool to be a beekeeper. But because of the knowledge, I took it up
01:55 later on. I used to build beautiful beehives. Our honey, when we do four extractions throughout
02:02 the year, it goes by the season. We don't mix or blend it and it's 100% raw, pure honey.
02:12 Well I live in Newcastle so I've come across the Christmas markets quite a lot. It's the
02:17 first time that I'm really working with this company and yeah, it's kind of really exciting
02:24 and lots of new things about. I think, you know, smelling mulled wine and the hot chocolate
02:29 and you know, there's lots of things, lots of different presents and things. So yeah,
02:33 lots of inspiration for Christmas. It's literally been a backbone for us for the rest of the
02:39 year. So kind of like meeting new customers on a day-to-day basis when you set up for
02:44 like a month or five weeks, that is a lot of people to talk to. So it's been fabulous
02:49 and people can find us all year round. The Newcastle Christmas markets will be open until
02:55 the 23rd of December, so if you do need some last minute gifts, there will be stalls that
03:00 are open.
