Dickau was impressed with Gonzaga's defense in the Bulldogs' 76-57 win
Transcript
00:00 Well, Gonzaga in the consolation bracket.
00:02 Now the Maui Invitational after
00:04 losing to Purdue looked much better.
00:07 7657 win against Syracuse yesterday
00:09 against Purdue had some struggles
00:12 in the second half taking care of
00:15 the ball knocking down shots was
00:17 not the case down the stretch of
00:21 the second half for Gonzaga.
00:23 It was.
00:24 It was roughly 5141 with a little
00:27 under 12 minutes left and then
00:29 Gonzaga finished on a heck of a run.
00:31 To close it out,
00:33 they had a 13 oh run at some point,
00:36 but really the last 1214 minutes
00:38 they dominated the game,
00:39 extended the lead,
00:40 kind of want it running away for
00:43 Zags in double figures led by Nolan
00:46 Hickman 7 of 14 from the field to go
00:50 alongside a pair of rebounds for him.
00:53 Only negative so far for Nolan Hickman
00:56 would be a little bit of turnover issues.
00:59 And then he hasn't been great at creating
01:02 shots that lead to easy buckets,
01:05 but that will come.
01:07 I think he's still figuring out and
01:09 finding his way at college level,
01:11 balancing scoring versus playmaking
01:12 for others and that will come.
01:14 But Ryan Nemhart,
01:15 fellow backcourt mate,
01:16 11 points,
01:17 7 assists,
01:18 four turnovers that will be
01:20 cleaned up a little bit.
01:21 I am sure in address leading into
01:24 what I would imagine is a is a game
01:27 against UCLA tomorrow 'cause Gonzaga
01:29 had 18 turnovers.
01:30 I mentioned the four from Nemhart,
01:33 two from Hickman,
01:34 two from Stromer,
01:35 two from Watson,
01:36 but five from EK that will
01:38 definitely get cleared up.
01:40 EK 16 points,
01:42 14 rebounds as well as Watson,
01:44 12 points,
01:45 13 rebounds.
01:46 So two players with double doubles.
01:48 Dusty Stromer still finding his way
01:50 in the starting lineup only three
01:52 points but five rebounds.
01:54 I've been really impressed with his
01:56 scoring and seeing that a young player
01:58 missing jump shots doesn't allow that
02:00 to impact the rest of his game.
02:03 But back to to Grammy K a good
02:05 night with a double double.
02:07 The five turnovers will get cleaned up
02:09 as mentioned for steals as well,
02:11 but he's had a heck of a challenge
02:14 so far here in Maui.
02:16 First off,
02:16 going against Zack idiot 74 now faces
02:19 name McLeod from Syracuse 7 foot 4.
02:21 So a heck of a production.
02:23 Good job for him.
02:25 Today you saw Gonzaga really kind of
02:28 play seven guys for the most part.
02:31 Again,
02:31 Ben Gregg and Braden Huff Huff.
02:34 Excuse me are clearly the two that
02:37 are going to be getting minutes in
02:40 the rotation and Luca cry.
02:42 No cry Novich as well as June are
02:46 kind of still kind of trying to figure
02:49 out what their potential roles are
02:52 going to be, what their opportunities are.
02:55 Earn coach few and staffs trust,
02:57 but there's an opportunity for
02:59 either one of those if they can
03:02 kind of have a standout game or
03:04 two in the very near future.
03:06 We saw it a year ago with Ben Gregg.
03:09 Curious to see if either one of those
03:12 kind of takes that opportunity and
03:14 runs with it here in the near future.
03:17 But all in all,
03:18 Gonzaga shot the ball much better in
03:21 the first half 25% from three,
03:23 seven of 20s.
03:24 They were not married to the three
03:26 point shot as much as they were in
03:28 particular the second half against Purdue.
03:31 Turnovers gotta be cleaned up.
03:32 That's for sure.
03:33 18 is too many,
03:34 but really when you look at a good
03:37 defensive effort, they force Syracuse
03:39 to 36% from the field.
03:40 Only three of 24 from the three point line.
03:43 I think a lot of that had to do with
03:46 Syracuse best shooter from the
03:48 perimeter went one of 10.
03:49 Judiments was impressive though,
03:51 and that's always been something that
03:53 Gonzaga has struggled at times of
03:55 going back for years now is taking
03:57 care of a perimeter player on the
04:00 other team who's creative,
04:01 who's explosive,
04:02 has freedom to be able to create
04:04 their own shot and get going.
04:06 Judiments had 22,
04:07 but most of those were early in the
04:10 game when it was still kind of hanging
04:13 in the balance.
04:14 Gonzaga did a really good job shutting
04:16 him off later on in the game and in
04:19 the second half, but Gonzaga.
04:22 Dominate on the glass plus 20.
04:25 All in all,
04:26 good bounce back response game for
04:28 Gonzaga now would have been nice to
04:31 have seen them match up against Tennessee.
04:34 Today in the semifinals,
04:35 but didn't get things done against.
04:37 Purdue is mentioned.
04:38 If you look at the semis in this
04:40 tournament at Gonzaga one man,
04:42 it is impressive.
04:43 You got on the bottom number one.
04:45 Kansas playing number four Marquette
04:47 on the top of the bracket.
04:48 Number two Purdue who Gonzaga
04:50 obviously lost to yesterday.
04:52 Playing against number 7 Tennessee.
04:54 So heck of a tournament.
04:56 If you can come out of this now with winning,
04:59 what I would imagine is you know the
05:02 constellation bracket against I'm thinking
05:04 against UCLA who's on the fringes of the
05:07 top 25 having all in all two and one is a.
05:11 A good early season tournament where
05:13 you're going to learn a lot about your
05:15 team you're going to learn strengths.
05:17 You're going to learn weaknesses,
05:19 opportunities of where you can get better,
05:21 where you need to get better,
05:22 where you want to get better for
05:25 certain situations,
05:25 but you're also even with the one loss.
05:28 If that's how it shakes out,
05:29 it's not going to be a Ken
05:32 Palm breaker for your your schedule.
05:34 It's not going to be a net.
05:37 Breaker for you know later in the year
05:39 when the net rankings start to become
05:42 a really big deal about seating in
05:44 the NCAA tournament and how many teams
05:46 you play that qualified for the NCAA
05:49 tournament so all in all good day
05:51 two in Honolulu at the Maui
05:53 Invitational for the Zags.
05:55 Will figure out who they're going
05:57 to play shortly.
05:58 I would imagine it's UCLA.
06:00 You can go back for years now in
06:02 that UCLA Gonzaga matchup going
06:05 back way all the way back to 2000.
06:08 99 and 2000 season where Gonzaga
06:10 went down to Pauly beat a Steve
06:13 Lavin coach team in Pauly Pavilion.
06:15 Gonzaga has seemed to have
06:17 their number and many times you
06:19 got the Jalen Suggs shot in the
06:22 final four you got the Julian
06:24 Strother shot from straight away.
06:26 Season ago,
06:27 but these two teams typically tend to
06:29 put together a heck of a matchup in a
06:33 great game so for Gonzaga Nation.
06:36 Appreciate all the support.
06:38 Don't forget to follow us on all
06:41 the social media channels.
06:43 Take care and have a great day.
