MotorTranscript
00:00 G'day, I'm Paul.
00:00 Do you wanna hear one of the coolest car names ever?
00:03 GWM Tank.
00:05 I think it gives you an impression
00:06 of what they're hoping to do with this thing.
00:09 It is the Great Wall Motors GWM Tank 300.
00:13 So it is designed for off-roading.
00:15 It has a stack of standard off-road features.
00:17 And today we're going to see exactly what it's like
00:20 to drive on-road and off-road.
00:22 This competes with things like the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport,
00:25 the Isuzu MU-X, the Jeep Wrangler,
00:28 very much ladder frame chassis based
00:30 on a used off-road type vibes.
00:32 And it's actually pretty affordable as well.
00:33 So I priced it just under $51,000 for this one here,
00:37 which is the top spec ultra version in petrol trim.
00:40 That's too expensive, the entire range kicks off
00:42 at just under $47,000 for the luxe version.
00:46 So pretty affordable there.
00:48 So like I said, today we're gonna do a detailed review
00:50 plus a little bit of off-roading.
00:51 If you do wanna skip ahead to other parts of this review,
00:53 you can use the time codes on the screen.
00:55 Or if you're on YouTube, you can scroll down
00:57 and use the chapters below.
00:58 If you haven't done so already, subscribe to our channel
01:00 and press the bell icon so you can find out
01:02 every single time we drive a tank.
01:05 Okay, let's talk exterior design.
01:08 So you've got five colors to pick from.
01:09 All but gray is gonna cost you $595.
01:12 This color is very orange.
01:15 I don't know that I would go this color
01:17 'cause it looks kind of not very nice,
01:19 but there are other colors to choose from,
01:21 which is good news.
01:22 Now on the design front, just look at it.
01:24 It is like a box on wheels.
01:26 It is really interesting.
01:27 It's quite imposing when you see it here in person.
01:29 It just, you know, it turns a lot of heads.
01:32 You've got these flat surfaces, just bold drop-offs here.
01:36 And a big grill up the front here
01:37 with piano black in there.
01:39 This is the, I guess the branding they're putting on tanks.
01:42 So overseas, tank is actually its own name, I guess,
01:45 but here in Australia, they're sitting it under GWM
01:47 so that it all sort of falls under that tree.
01:50 LED headlights, really quite powerful,
01:52 but there is a downside to these.
01:54 It's linked to the start/stop system.
01:56 When the car switches off and then on again,
01:58 the headlights like briefly switch off and on.
02:01 So you end up sort of flashing people constantly
02:03 as the car runs through its stop/start cycle.
02:05 So I don't know how they didn't pick that up
02:07 during the engineering process,
02:08 and hopefully it's an easy software fix,
02:10 but yeah, it can be a little bit frustrating.
02:12 You've got underbody protection under here,
02:14 plus a recovery point here.
02:15 Here's worth pointing out,
02:16 a lot of other vehicles in this segment
02:18 actually have dual recovery points at the front there.
02:20 This has just the one.
02:22 So if you are gonna be doing a lot of off-roading,
02:24 it could be worth looking at an aftermarket option.
02:25 And just talking about aftermarket options as well,
02:28 I think the aftermarket is gonna go bananas on this
02:30 because it is designed for off-roading
02:33 and companies like ARB
02:34 that are doing a lot of off-roading equipment
02:36 for things like the Ford Ranger and other vehicles
02:38 just have a lot of work to run with here.
02:40 So whip around to the side.
02:42 Around here, you've got a set of 18-inch alloy wheels,
02:47 and it's quite a chubby profile tire there,
02:49 so 60 profile tire.
02:51 Now this is interesting because typically with Chinese cars,
02:54 when they do land in Australia,
02:55 they have fairly foreign tires
02:57 that we haven't really heard of.
02:58 This is actually using a set of Michelins,
03:00 which is decent on the tire front
03:02 because it should mean that it actually
03:04 has enough traction to go around corners.
03:06 Sometimes we find with those Chinese branded tires
03:08 that they aren't really tuned for sportier driving.
03:10 And obviously this isn't a sports car,
03:12 but it's just one of those things
03:14 that I'm glad they actually are thinking about.
03:16 Design's pretty straightforward,
03:17 machine finish on the outside there
03:19 and a graphite finish on the inside.
03:21 Up the top here,
03:22 you've got some cladding there for the wheel arches.
03:24 You can clearly see the suspension setup.
03:26 So even though this shares a very similar platform
03:28 to the GWM Ute, it sits on a ladder frame chassis.
03:31 It doesn't use leaf spring suspension,
03:32 so it's a coil sprung setup,
03:34 and it should mean that it actually rides okay on the road.
03:37 Along the side here, you've got a set of sidesteps.
03:39 These look pretty cheap, if I'm honest,
03:41 sort of made of plastic,
03:42 and they actually do feel quite sturdy
03:44 and don't sort of flex as much as you do find
03:47 on something like the new Amarok,
03:48 but would have been nice to see perhaps some metal here
03:51 or just something a bit more interesting
03:52 than just a plastic finish there.
03:54 These wing mirrors actually remind me,
03:55 what do they remind me of?
03:57 Oh, that's right, on the Gladiator,
03:58 they kind of have a similar shape there.
03:59 So indicator built into there.
04:01 You also have a camera there for the 360 camera.
04:04 You have a set of roof rails up the top here.
04:06 These feel really nice and sturdy,
04:08 so they're not like a plastic setup.
04:09 They're quite nice.
04:11 This is plastic though, so it doesn't match body color.
04:14 Kind of suits the appearance.
04:15 Normally it does sort of cheap in a vehicle,
04:17 but I think here it actually doesn't look too bad.
04:19 Privacy glass.
04:21 Around the back here, you have a set of disc brakes,
04:23 and again, lots of clearance there within the wheel arches.
04:25 I'll be keen to see how much articulation this has
04:28 when we do a bit of light off-roading later on.
04:30 Come around to the back with me.
04:32 That theme continues with those big plastic bumpers.
04:35 Full LED taillights.
04:36 You have a 300 there.
04:37 There is actually a 500,
04:39 a bigger version of the tank that is coming.
04:41 It's also available in a plug-in hybrid as well.
04:43 This is also available in a hybrid too.
04:45 This one is just the sort of entry-level petrol option.
04:48 Over here, you have GWM tank,
04:50 and then you've got a handle there to open the tailgate.
04:53 When we have a look at the boot,
04:54 I'll show you how that works.
04:56 Spare tire on the back here.
04:57 You've got a wiper there, shark fin aerial,
04:58 and a brake light built into there as well.
05:01 Let me know what you think about the design of the GWM tank.
05:05 Do you reckon it looks cool?
05:07 I kind of like it.
05:07 So let me know what you reckon in the comment section below.
05:10 Okay, so we are inside the tank.
05:12 This is what the key looks like.
05:14 You've got panic, lock, boots, unlock.
05:18 Then on the back, you have that tank logo.
05:21 It's actually quite a cool key.
05:22 It's got like a rubber finish on it,
05:23 and it's very small and compact, which is great.
05:26 It's a proximity sensing key,
05:27 so you can leave that in your pocket,
05:29 grab the door handle,
05:30 and then you have a push-button start just in here.
05:33 I was actually really surprised by this.
05:35 To be honest, I hadn't done much sort of research
05:37 and looked at images of the interior,
05:40 but when I picked this up from work,
05:41 I'm like, "Oh, this looks unreal."
05:43 You've got these two enormous screens ahead of you.
05:45 Really is quite a premium-looking interior,
05:48 and I think they've done a great job
05:50 to make you feel like you're spending mega-dollars here
05:52 without actually having to spend mega-dollars.
05:54 Although some of this is very reminiscent of Mercedes-Benz.
05:57 These air vents look almost identical
05:59 to the ones that Mercedes-Benz use in the G-Class,
06:02 but outside of that, the rest is quite sort of
06:04 nicely presented.
06:05 In terms of the surfaces,
06:08 they are all quite soft to the touch.
06:10 How soft are they?
06:11 Well, we've got our durometer,
06:13 tested the main surfaces in this cabin.
06:15 If you wanna see how this car compares to others
06:17 that we've tested before,
06:18 have a look at the link in the description below.
06:20 Now, what about build quality?
06:22 So, tiny bit wonky there in the center.
06:26 Doesn't feel too bad,
06:28 and this is what the door sounds like.
06:30 (door thuds)
06:32 Okay, let's talk infotainment.
06:35 So you have two 12.3-inch displays,
06:38 one for the infotainment, one for the driver controls.
06:41 I'll run you through both of them.
06:43 Only the infotainment is a touchscreen,
06:45 and it's only driven by the touchscreen.
06:47 There's no sort of central controller here.
06:49 It's a pretty straightforward system.
06:50 So you have your home screen here
06:52 with radio, audio, climate controls,
06:54 and then seat functions along with car information.
06:57 There is no inbuilt satellite navigation.
06:59 That's all done through smartphone mirroring,
07:01 but you do have the ability to look at shortcuts
07:03 like these sections up the top here,
07:05 and then you can set and customize those as well
07:07 as you like, which I think is a pretty cool function.
07:10 And if you jump over here to the menu,
07:12 you'll see the rest of the standard controls,
07:13 including this.
07:15 Ah, so you can put media in here as well, which is fun.
07:18 You can look at pictures of your kids and random things.
07:21 It also has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
07:24 Show you what Apple CarPlay looks like.
07:26 Full screen integration, that is really nice.
07:29 Pretty sort of quick there as well.
07:31 Keep in mind that both Apple CarPlay
07:33 and Android Auto are both wired,
07:35 so no wireless, unfortunately.
07:37 And this is what Android Auto looks like.
07:40 So yeah, full screen integration again.
07:42 Nice and quick too.
07:44 Now on the radio front, you have AM/FM radio,
07:47 no DAB radio here.
07:48 You do get DAB radio on the hybrid, strangely,
07:51 but it is all plumbed through a nine speaker
07:54 Infinity branded sound system.
07:57 Over ahead of the driver here,
07:58 you have a display that gives you
08:00 all your sort of basic information.
08:01 But in addition to that,
08:02 you can also then customize each side of that screen,
08:07 run through your different settings.
08:08 So there is a fair bit of sort of customization
08:10 available there for the driver.
08:12 Okay, let's chat safety.
08:13 So you have autonomous emergency braking.
08:15 You have a lane departure warning
08:17 with a lane keeping assistant.
08:19 You've got blind spot monitoring
08:20 built into the wing mirror over there.
08:22 Auto dimming rear vision mirror.
08:24 You have rear cross traffic alert.
08:26 You have both front and rear parking sensors.
08:28 You have a 360 camera and this is what that looks like.
08:31 Wow, quality of that is excellent.
08:34 So you can clearly see out the back of the vehicle there.
08:37 See what it says on the suitcase.
08:38 That's a 360 view.
08:40 It is a little bit distorted around the edges there,
08:42 but the clarity around there
08:43 is probably one of the better ones that we've seen.
08:45 Also gives you distances in centimeters
08:48 between you and the object behind you, which is great.
08:50 You can then go to a 3D mode as well
08:52 to see what's sort of going on around the car.
08:54 Whip around there if you want to.
08:56 You can then zoom into these sections too if you need to.
09:00 It really is quite a decent setup there.
09:02 I'm surprised by how good this is.
09:04 So I'm very impressed with that.
09:06 And this is what the horn sounds like.
09:08 (horn honking)
09:11 Now let's chat practicality
09:13 and we'll start off with your connectivity.
09:14 So you've got USB-A port, USB-C port.
09:17 There's a USB-A port up here for your dash cam.
09:20 12 volt down here.
09:21 You have a wireless phone charger just there.
09:23 In terms of storing your phone,
09:25 you can slap it out on the wireless charger.
09:27 You've got plenty of storage around here, which is fantastic.
09:30 Now, one thing I think they probably didn't really get right
09:33 and I'm a little bit disappointed by is,
09:35 I thought just here under the air vent,
09:38 it was actually a cup holder,
09:40 but it's like a little coin tray.
09:41 So I think they missed an opportunity
09:43 to put cup holders there
09:44 because when you try and stick your coffee down here,
09:47 it is a really long way down.
09:49 So it's kind of awkward and clumsy
09:51 to get your coffee out again while you're driving.
09:53 So I just don't think that's great placement
09:55 of those cup holders and they're just far too low for that.
09:58 But anyway, in terms of your bottle though,
10:01 fits nicely into there.
10:02 There's teeth in there as well.
10:04 It's inside the door too.
10:06 Try our big bottle as well.
10:08 (bottle clatters)
10:10 Oh no, the bottle doesn't fit inside the door.
10:12 That's a shame.
10:13 Anyway, other storage,
10:15 you've got a little slot here as well
10:17 above the not cup holder slot.
10:20 You've got a really decent size center console there as well
10:22 with a tray that slides forwards and backwards.
10:25 I think there's an air conditioning vent there as well,
10:26 which is great.
10:27 You've got a glove box down here,
10:29 which is reasonably sized.
10:31 A little grab handle there.
10:32 And then finally you have a sunglasses holder at the top.
10:35 Now let's talk about some of your comfort features.
10:37 Some of this stuff just blows me away for the price
10:39 because you're getting dual zone automatic climate control.
10:42 You have heated and cooled seats, heated steering wheel.
10:46 They really have sort of just thrown everything at this
10:49 in terms of features, which is great.
10:50 You have electric seat adjustment for the driver
10:53 and front passenger.
10:54 You also have a massage function
10:56 for the driver's seat as well.
10:58 Seats are actually pretty comfy.
10:59 So I spent a fair bit of time driving this
11:01 to get here this morning and felt sort of great.
11:03 No dramas there.
11:04 Steering offers both tilt and reach adjustment.
11:08 I just wish it offered a bit more reach adjustment
11:10 because I could do with just a little bit more on that,
11:13 but we'll see how it goes once we do actually go
11:15 for a bit of a drive around the track here.
11:17 But yeah, all that stuff's really great.
11:19 And then just on our reach test,
11:20 all of this stuff is easy to reach while you're driving.
11:23 Okay, so second row of the tank.
11:26 It's actually a fair bit of room here.
11:27 So my driver's seat is pretty far back
11:29 and you can see I've got stacks of knee room.
11:30 Toe room is great and headroom is excellent too.
11:34 There's a few creature comforts back here.
11:35 So you've got mat pockets, you have air vents.
11:38 You've also got two USB-A outlets
11:41 under these little hidey holes,
11:43 a little storage nook just down there.
11:45 Center armrest here with two cup holders.
11:48 The bottle fits in there nicely with those rubber teeth.
11:51 Bottle can then fit inside the door
11:53 without any dramas as well.
11:55 You've got three top tether points
11:56 along with two ISOFIX points.
11:59 Grab handle as well if you are in the back seat
12:01 when there is off-roading going on.
12:03 Now, window test.
12:04 So it is manual down, manual up,
12:07 but it goes all the way down, which is good news.
12:10 Okay, let's talk cargo space.
12:12 So similar to the Prado,
12:13 you have a door that swings open like this.
12:15 I'm not a huge fan of that simply because it means
12:19 that if you are parked up against a wall,
12:21 you need to leave yourself sufficient distance.
12:23 So you're gonna be basically this far away from the wall
12:25 if you do need to open this.
12:27 So not a great setup, but I guess it's one
12:30 of those compromises that you have to make somewhere.
12:32 And that reveals this, which is 400 litres of cargo space.
12:35 Also not very impressive when you look
12:37 at the other competitors in this segment.
12:39 It's quite a narrow entry point,
12:40 very high off the ground there.
12:42 And then even beneath the cargo floor,
12:43 you've got no room to store anything really.
12:45 You've got the subwoofer there, jack, and that's about it.
12:48 So yeah, I think they could have done a little bit better
12:50 there on the storage.
12:51 But on the upside, you do have stacks of hooks
12:53 around the place here, a little bit of netting
12:54 off to the side there.
12:56 And then also power outlet that gives you
12:57 120 watt AC plug as well, which is great.
13:00 So if you do want to expand the space
13:02 so you can drop that second row,
13:03 I'll show you what that looks like in just a second.
13:05 But I'll pop the bags in there first,
13:07 give you an idea of how much room there is.
13:09 It's actually, I wonder if that'll actually close
13:12 if we have the bag in that way.
13:13 Yeah, it does, which is great.
13:15 And then that second row as well,
13:19 see what that looks like.
13:20 So there you go, it does help with space
13:22 because it is a flat floor.
13:24 So I guess there is that benefit,
13:25 but yeah, I think they could have done
13:26 just a little bit more with the space
13:28 they had available here.
13:30 Okay, we've just hit the road in the tank.
13:33 I don't think I'm ever gonna get sick of that name.
13:35 It sounds great.
13:36 So what is powering this?
13:37 So I mentioned earlier, there is a hybrid
13:39 and there is also a turbo petrol.
13:41 This one is the turbo petrol,
13:42 two litre turbo charged four cylinder petrol engine
13:46 makes 162 kilowatts of power and 380 newton metres of torque.
13:51 And that's all mated to an eight speed
13:53 automatic transmission.
13:54 Now what does all that feel like behind the wheel?
13:56 Keeping in mind this weighs around 2.1 tonnes.
13:59 Give it a little sink in there.
14:01 Yeah, look, it's not going to absolutely blow you away,
14:06 but it is certainly adequate performance.
14:09 Have a think about how this compares to its peers though.
14:11 So you've got stuff like Everest, Prado,
14:13 500 newton metres of torque a piece there.
14:16 So they are going to feel considerably punchier,
14:18 but this has the advantage of being a petrol.
14:20 So you've got a wider torque band to work with
14:22 and it will feel far more responsive most of the time.
14:25 But keep in mind as well,
14:27 it is like half the price of a Prado Kakadu.
14:30 Now, GWM claims a combined fuel economy
14:32 of just under 10 litres per 100 Ks.
14:35 We are currently sitting on 11.8.
14:39 And I'm actually quite happy with that figure
14:41 because this car is pretty much brand new.
14:44 660 Ks had only a handful of kilometres on it
14:47 when we picked it up.
14:48 Done highway driving
14:50 and then some faster driving here earlier today.
14:52 And I think that fuel economy figure is pretty impressive
14:55 when you consider the size of this vehicle
14:56 and the four cylinder turbo engine
14:58 that's sort of powering everything.
15:00 Okay, sine wave time.
15:02 Let's jack the speed up to 130.
15:04 So we do this at 130
15:06 because that is the maximum speed limit in Australia.
15:09 And it's what you're going to encounter
15:10 if you're overtaking
15:11 or doing anything faster on a country road.
15:14 And it gives us a good indication
15:15 of what body control is like.
15:18 Got to keep in mind as well
15:19 that this is quite a big vehicle and quite softly sprung.
15:23 So let's see how this goes here.
15:26 Ooh, yeah, okay.
15:28 That's very floaty.
15:29 Yeah, we hit bump stops there on the way down.
15:32 Yeah, I kind of was expecting that.
15:34 It's hard to find a good compromise with these vehicles
15:37 because you either build it
15:38 so it's excellent for off-road driving
15:40 or you build it so that it's great for on-road driving.
15:43 And if you pick a spot in the middle,
15:44 you're going to compromise one of those things.
15:46 And I think they've gone down the path
15:47 of making this better for off-road driving
15:49 as opposed to on-road driving in that respect.
15:52 Okay, time to hit the worst road in Australia.
15:55 This is our corrugated road, 90 k's an hour we do this
15:59 and we have a condensed sine wave here as well.
16:02 Yeah, this is where it's really excelling.
16:04 I'm plowing over this stuff at the moment
16:06 and it is so nice and comfortable inside the cabin.
16:09 It's very softly sprung and it's soaking everything up nice.
16:12 This is our condensed sine wave.
16:15 Really shakes the absolute living daylights out of the car.
16:18 It's doing a nice job here, powering along over this stuff.
16:21 So yeah, very impressive ride compliance
16:24 on this choppy stuff.
16:25 Okay, so you have a stack of drive modes to work with here.
16:28 Most of them are off-road focus.
16:29 So I'm going to go to the one that's on-road focused.
16:31 It's called expert mode.
16:33 So you press this, it gives you a warning
16:35 and then it allows you to configure all the settings.
16:37 So I'll pop that into sport, steering into sport
16:40 and switch traction control into traction off.
16:44 Now that immediately becomes raspy.
16:46 Let's go for a quick spin around our track here.
16:48 Oh, this has a lot of body roll
16:52 and traction control is just biting constantly
16:54 there in the background.
16:55 So I'm going to switch all of that off for the moment.
16:58 Yeah, look, it does have a lot of body roll
16:59 but what I'm noticing here is
17:02 it actually reaches that body roll limit
17:04 and then it just settles in there
17:05 and it's all fairly predictable.
17:07 Even on this faster section here,
17:09 it is motoring along really nicely.
17:12 Brakes feel nice and responsive too.
17:15 And look, the steering has enough weight to it.
17:17 It is a little vague there in the comfort setting
17:19 but here in the sport setting,
17:20 it sort of adds the weight that you need to it.
17:22 It's actually performing pretty well for a...
17:26 I love it how it does that.
17:28 It just goes into like it's panic mode
17:30 when you're on the brakes hard and you hit a bump.
17:33 But yeah, it is actually surprisingly not bad.
17:36 I was not expecting it to be this sporty.
17:38 It is a big vehicle.
17:39 It has a lot of body roll
17:40 but ultimately it all feels really in check
17:43 and it is nice and punchy.
17:44 On the back straight here, it is absolutely hauling.
17:47 So there you go.
17:48 Look, it's not the last word on sort of sporty handling
17:51 but it is actually way better
17:53 than I thought it was gonna be.
17:55 Okay, pop this back into its normal mode.
17:59 What is this like to drive day to day?
18:02 Well, look, in terms of road noise,
18:04 it is a little bit noisy.
18:05 You get some tyre noise coming into the cabin,
18:07 especially at highway speeds.
18:09 And it's not so much the tyre noise,
18:10 it's actually the wind noise
18:11 that you get over these mirrors.
18:13 That's where I think most of it's coming from.
18:15 It's not the end of the world
18:15 but it is something you definitely notice,
18:17 especially as the wind picks up.
18:18 Now what's visibility like?
18:20 Well, I can see clearly down the front there
18:21 'cause that bonnet sort of goes all the way to the edge
18:23 and it's quite sort of squared off and boxy
18:25 but you do have the access to this 360 camera,
18:28 the front and rear parking sensors.
18:29 The wing mirrors are nice and big as well.
18:31 You've got those blind spot monitors built into there too.
18:33 Okay, time to do a little bit of testing
18:35 of these lane support systems.
18:38 On the way here, I actually found it highly intrusive
18:41 and quite annoying.
18:41 So let's see if I can sort of replicate some of that.
18:44 It's actually the emergency lane keeping function
18:47 that I found most annoying 'cause you get near the line,
18:49 in fact, not even sort of over the line or anything
18:51 and it just keeps coming up with messages
18:54 about how you're crossing the line
18:55 and it just violently sort of shunts you back over.
18:58 It's like right now, you can see it's just randomly,
19:02 like I don't even know what it's doing now.
19:03 Like you can see here on that camera
19:05 that it's just randomly steering left and right.
19:08 So yeah, it's a really weird setup.
19:11 So I'll pop the cruise control on
19:13 just so we can actually see how this goes.
19:16 Set the cruise control to 70 Ks an hour.
19:20 Okay, so that's set.
19:21 The steering wheel has gone green.
19:23 So I'm just going to lightly let go of that.
19:25 Look at the steering.
19:26 I really don't understand what's going on here.
19:28 It is just really shunting at it constantly.
19:31 It's not smooth in any way.
19:32 And this is in our first lane.
19:34 We're actually testing this lane
19:35 and the two outer lanes to simulate a situation
19:38 where it needs to steer a bit more.
19:39 And even in this first lane, it's a bit funny.
19:41 So I'll move over to the next lane.
19:43 Let's see what it's like there.
19:46 I'll wait for that to lock on.
19:48 It's just gone green.
19:51 So there it goes again.
19:53 It's just veering all over the road here for some reason.
19:57 And we'll jump over to the next lane up.
20:00 See if that locks on.
20:03 So it's got, there we go.
20:05 It's got the lines active.
20:07 No, it hasn't.
20:08 No, it's not going to lock on here at all in this lane.
20:12 But yeah, it's just really,
20:14 I don't know, it probably just needs a bit more calibration
20:17 because at the moment it, yeah.
20:19 Like I said, when I was driving here this morning,
20:21 I switched it off 'cause it was getting really annoying
20:23 and it was quite violent in the way that it was doing stuff.
20:25 So yeah, I think that definitely needs
20:27 just a little bit more work 'cause it's not quite there yet.
20:30 Okay, time to do some performance testing.
20:34 Before we jump into that though,
20:36 Car Expert is more than just a YouTube channel.
20:38 We're actually a really big website.
20:40 We have like 50 full-time staff here in Australia.
20:42 We also have a network of dealers that we deal with
20:45 that will get you the best deal on in-stock vehicles.
20:48 So if you are in the market for a new car,
20:49 like the Tank 300,
20:51 all you have to do is go to Google and type in
20:53 Help Me Car Expert.
20:55 That'll take you to a page that explains everything
20:57 about how we can get you a deal on your new car.
20:59 There is no official zero to 100 time.
21:02 We're going to put it back into expert mode.
21:04 We'll switch off all the nannies and stuff like that.
21:08 And then we'll go through to 120 and see how we go.
21:11 I'm really interested to see how quick this is.
21:13 So here it is.
21:15 It's not too bad off the line there.
21:23 All right.
21:24 It's 80,
21:25 100,
21:28 and 120.
21:33 All right, we'll bring this up to a stop
21:35 and have a look at our acceleration time.
21:38 So zero to 100, 8.95 seconds.
21:42 It's actually not that bad.
21:43 And then 80 to 120 in 6.97 seconds.
21:46 You can see it really slows down there
21:48 once you get up and move.
21:50 It sort of runs out a little bit of puff there.
21:52 But let's go back and do a break from 100.
21:54 I'm genuinely curious to see how quickly this will pull up.
21:57 Okay, let's get up to 100.
21:59 Here we go.
22:00 Slam down the anchors.
22:02 See what it feels like.
22:04 And then 100.
22:06 Oh gee, it really dives.
22:08 Actually felt to me like the rear wheels
22:11 left the ground there as it was finding itself.
22:14 Left to look back at the footage
22:15 to see if that was the case,
22:16 but wow, it sort of just really nosedived.
22:19 So all right, let's see what that deceleration time was.
22:24 So three seconds and 42.09 metres.
22:27 So it's about on par with the other vehicles
22:29 in this segment.
22:30 It's not amazing, but it's not great either.
22:33 And yeah, I'll be interested to see the replay.
22:35 Now, if you do wanna see how this vehicle
22:36 compares to others that we've tested before,
22:38 scroll down to the link in the description below.
22:40 That'll give you a table
22:42 that we're sort of building at the moment.
22:43 And if you wanna know which app we're using
22:44 to do all this performance testing,
22:46 left a pinned comment in the comment section below
22:49 that gives you all the details.
22:50 And now our reverse acceleration test.
22:53 Let's see how we go.
22:54 Okay, 39 kilometres an hour.
23:01 Okay, so it is time to do a little bit of light off-roading.
23:04 And I'll run you through the four-wheel drive specs first.
23:07 So this is a full-time two-wheel drive.
23:09 So it means it is rear-wheel drive most of the time.
23:12 It has four-wheel drive high range,
23:13 but you can only use that on unsealed surfaces.
23:17 Then you have four-wheel drive low range.
23:18 There are a bunch of drive modes here as well,
23:20 but they only work in low range.
23:23 You have a rear diff lock that works in two-wheel drive,
23:25 four-wheel drive and four-wheel drive low range.
23:27 You have a front diff lock as well, which is pretty cool.
23:30 That only works in low range.
23:31 You have the tank turn function.
23:34 So that works in low range only.
23:36 And then you have a crawl assist function as well
23:38 that's for low range.
23:39 There is also like a snow driving mode that works
23:42 regardless of which sort of drive mode that you're in.
23:44 So I'm keen to give this a bit of a crack
23:46 and see how it goes.
23:47 In terms of the actual four-wheel drive specs,
23:49 you have an approach angle of 33 degrees
23:50 and a departure angle of 34 degrees,
23:52 ground clearance of 224 mil.
23:55 And then I mentioned earlier that underbody protection
23:57 as well, just to be on the safe side.
23:59 So what we're gonna do first is we're gonna test
24:03 the traction control system across our offset mogul.
24:05 We're gonna get into a situation where the rear wheel
24:08 is off the ground and that is going to force
24:11 the traction control system to act
24:13 to allow the car to move.
24:14 So see how well that works.
24:17 So we'll line this up just here,
24:19 wait for that wheel to get off the ground,
24:21 which is just, just there.
24:25 So it's teetering a little bit at the moment.
24:26 So I'll roll onto the throttle.
24:28 I can hear the traction control working there.
24:32 It's trying to bite gradually.
24:34 So it's not doing an amazing job.
24:40 So it is basically thinking that it's just doing
24:43 normal driving at the moment.
24:44 So what I'll do, I'll just lock the rear diff.
24:47 That's locked now and I'll just roll onto the throttle.
24:51 Look at that, walks over straight away.
24:52 So yeah, look, the traction control system
24:55 doesn't know that it's in four-wheel drive mode
24:57 and that is one of the downsides to these,
24:59 not having a four-wheel drive or just an off-road mode
25:02 when you are in just normal driving.
25:04 So there's probably something that can work on,
25:06 but I love the fact that you can turn
25:07 the rear diff lock on immediately and just go for it.
25:11 Time to go back in the opposite direction.
25:12 This is normally where I would put it
25:14 into four-wheel drive high range.
25:17 So that is engaging now.
25:18 Nice and quick there as well.
25:19 So that's switched off stability control
25:21 and the forward collision warning.
25:22 So it's now basically splitting torque
25:24 between the front and rear axle.
25:25 It's a 50/50 split.
25:26 So, okay, let's line this up.
25:29 Let's see how it goes.
25:32 So same story again here.
25:33 We're going to be lifting a wheel off the ground there
25:36 and that's going to cause traction
25:37 to be at a premium just here.
25:40 So I'll roll onto the throttle now.
25:41 We'll see how well the system deals with that.
25:44 That's flicking up a bunch of water
25:47 onto our GoPro at the back there at the moment.
25:49 I'm gonna roll onto the throttle a bit more.
25:51 Traction control is doing something there.
25:53 Roll more onto that.
25:56 (engine revving)
25:59 Interesting, I can feel it gradually
26:01 giving us a little bit more wheel slip there,
26:03 but even with almost full throttle here,
26:06 it's actually not moving through at all.
26:08 So what I'm gonna have to do now to get out of this
26:10 is lock the rear diff.
26:11 So I'll push that.
26:13 It engages that rear diff lock
26:14 and I should just be able to roll onto the throttle now.
26:17 There it is.
26:19 So it kicks a little bit sideways there,
26:20 but kind of just does the job.
26:23 So again, let down a little bit there
26:25 by the traction controls.
26:26 They were probably the nannies that were biting there,
26:29 but once more, you can just lock that rear diff
26:31 and it sort of does everything for you.
26:32 Okay, now it is time to climb our hill
26:34 and this is where we get to test low range
26:37 a little bit as well.
26:38 So basically what I'm gonna do,
26:39 I'm gonna go up at gradual throttle first.
26:42 So we'll see if it'll get up there on its own.
26:44 And then what I'll do is come back again
26:46 and try coming to a stop on the way up
26:48 and then applying throttle
26:49 just to see how well it handles that type of scenario.
26:52 But low range, you pop it into neutral,
26:54 slide that across to four wheel drive low range.
26:57 I can feel it engaging just there.
26:59 So that's now on.
27:01 Let's have a little look here at some of these drive modes.
27:03 So if I put that back into drive.
27:05 So we have mud and sand.
27:09 We have rock.
27:10 We have mountain, designed for a bumpy and slippery conditions
27:14 of mountains, hills and mud surfaces.
27:16 I reckon that's probably the goer for this one.
27:18 And then pothole, designed for cross axle situations.
27:22 Nice, okay.
27:23 I'll put it into mountain mode.
27:25 We'll see what that does.
27:26 I've left the rear diff and the front diff
27:28 unlocked at the moment.
27:29 So we'll see if it'll get up.
27:30 If it doesn't, I'll give it another crack with those locked.
27:32 So here we go.
27:33 Gradual throttle.
27:34 See how this goes.
27:37 They've just resurfaced this.
27:38 I'm thinking it probably won't be too bad.
27:40 Nice.
27:44 Nice, that is very impressive.
27:46 I think this is showing us,
27:48 and we've seen this before
27:49 with a couple of different vehicles,
27:51 that when traction controls are involved,
27:53 often they'll impede the flow of things moving
27:56 because they're just trying to control everything.
27:58 But when you just leave it to its own devices,
28:00 it just really just does its own thing there.
28:03 And that was with rear diff, front diff unlocked.
28:05 So that's pretty impressive.
28:06 All right, we'll go through our mud bog
28:08 and try a hill descent now as well.
28:10 Okay, so let's try crawl control.
28:17 You press that to activate it.
28:18 You can see it coming up there.
28:20 And we'll just see what happens as we come over this crest.
28:24 That's cool.
28:25 So it's telling you you can adjust the speed.
28:27 And then this camera is also giving me an indication
28:30 of where we're going.
28:33 That's awesome.
28:34 So that's controlling speed really nicely there.
28:37 Very impressive that.
28:41 Features this car has is ridiculous.
28:44 So that is cool.
28:45 All right, we've got another little mud bog here.
28:47 So let's plow through this
28:48 and we'll head back one more time to try our hill.
28:51 Okay, this time around, let's go the whole hog.
28:57 Let's lock the front and rear diffs
28:59 and I'll come to a stop going up there.
29:01 So that's rear diff locked, front diff locked.
29:05 It activates so quickly, really impressive that.
29:07 Keep in mind with the front and rear diff locked,
29:09 it's going to affect your turning circle.
29:12 And there's a feature for that as well.
29:13 I'll show you in just a sec,
29:14 but let's climb up here and I'll come to a stop about here.
29:19 And then I'll just roll onto the throttle
29:20 and we'll see how it goes.
29:21 It's got hill holding, which is good, so.
29:23 Nice.
29:27 Yeah, this thing is a beast.
29:30 I'm really looking forward to seeing
29:32 what people can end up doing with this
29:33 when it comes to modifying them,
29:35 because I reckon this is going to be pretty fun
29:38 with a stack of aftermarket accessories.
29:40 Okay, let's attack some rocks.
29:42 So I'm going to put this over into rock mode.
29:45 What does that do?
29:46 So it locks the rear diff.
29:48 We'll see how it goes over here.
29:49 It should actually do okay, given how soft the suspension is.
29:53 So we'll see what happens.
29:55 So I'm going to ride the brake with the throttle
29:58 just to have a bit more control over pace.
30:01 Yeah, this is super comfortable so far.
30:04 No touchdowns yet, which is good news.
30:08 I think it's got enough clearance there
30:10 to get over this stuff without any issues.
30:12 And then we have that underbody protection too.
30:14 It's actually really good.
30:15 It is just getting over this without any dramas at all.
30:19 And it is really nice and comfortable too.
30:21 That rock mode gives you a different throttle feel as well,
30:25 which is nice.
30:27 So you're actually getting a bit more control over that
30:29 as you glide over those.
30:31 Wow, okay, very impressed with that.
30:33 Okay, time to go through some water.
30:35 So 700 millimetre wading depth.
30:38 So the river is pretty high today.
30:39 It's at 650, so we're right at the limit of this.
30:44 Okay, here we go.
30:45 Drop it in, see how it feels.
30:50 Oh, that's annoying, those parking sensors.
30:54 All right, we'll crawl through here.
30:56 You can hear the water lapping at the bottom there.
31:02 I'm going to have to gradually climb out of here.
31:04 These parking sensors are annoying.
31:06 Okay, climb out of here.
31:08 Beautiful, nice.
31:11 Okay, that is all done.
31:13 Well, there you go.
31:15 GWM Tank, it's actually pretty awesome off-road.
31:19 Like, even just with these standard tyres
31:22 that aren't really off-road focused,
31:24 is doing a commendable job with all of this stuff
31:27 that we're throwing at it.
31:28 And I think if you went to town on things like tyres
31:31 and some aftermarket equipment,
31:33 this would be an incredibly capable vehicle off-road as well.
31:36 So that's pretty cool.
31:37 I think it is let down slightly by the traction controls,
31:40 but ultimately you just go into low range
31:42 and do it all yourself if you need to.
31:43 You've got all of the tools here
31:45 to do what you need to do for a bargain price.
31:48 So yeah, very impressed with it.
31:50 Now, this is going to sound a little bit different
31:52 'cause we had to record it later on,
31:53 but this is what tank turn looks like in the Tank 300.
31:57 It basically is able to lock individual wheels
32:00 to tighten the turning circle.
32:02 Similar function to what we've seen
32:04 on the 300 Series Land Cruiser.
32:06 And as you can see in this footage,
32:07 it actually works.
32:08 So if you are on a trail, you need to turn super tight,
32:10 you enable this function in low range
32:13 and it's able to lock that rear wheel to tuck the car in
32:15 and make it turn really sharply.
32:17 Okay, so GWM Tank 300.
32:20 This is significantly better
32:21 than what I thought it was going to be.
32:22 It's great off-road.
32:24 There is so much technology and standard features
32:26 inside the cabin.
32:27 It just shows you how much brands like,
32:29 I don't know, Toyota as an example,
32:31 get away with charging like $90,000 for a Prado Kakadu
32:35 when this has pretty much all of that
32:37 and more for about half the price.
32:40 So I think that if you are looking at this as an off-roader
32:43 that you can potentially modify,
32:45 I think it is great value for money.
32:46 I am keen to see what they do with accessories
32:48 and stuff like that,
32:49 because I think that's going to be the telling tale
32:50 of whether people dive into this as an off-roader.
32:53 Now, what about as a daily?
32:55 Look, I think it is pretty let down
32:56 by the lack of boot space there.
32:58 I think in this segment,
32:59 if families are going to be buying this,
33:01 you do want a little bit more boot space
33:02 and there probably isn't quite enough in there.
33:04 I would like to see things like a wireless smartphone
33:07 mirroring as well down the track there
33:08 and an improvement on those lane departure things,
33:11 'cause I thought that was pretty average as well.
33:13 But outside of that, this has put a smile on my face.
33:16 So let me know in the comments section below,
33:18 what do you think about this?
33:19 Would you buy this over something like an Everest
33:21 or a Pajero Sport?
33:22 I am keen to see what you think.
33:23 Let me know down there.
