00:00 G'day, I'm Paul. So, Mitsubishi Triton, it is one of the best-selling dual-cab utes here
00:05 in Australia. It's called the L200 in other parts of the world. There is a brand new version
00:09 of it coming in today. I want to take you through some new pictures that have just been
00:13 released plus some renders that our computer person has put together based off the images
00:19 that Mitsubishi has actually officially released, plus some info that we've recently found out
00:25 about as well. So, today's going to be a brief video. If you do want to skip ahead to other
00:28 parts of this video, you can use the time codes on the screen there, or if you're on
00:31 YouTube, you can scroll down and use the chapters below. And hey, if you haven't done so already,
00:35 subscribe to our channel and press the bell icon. That'll keep you posted whenever we
00:39 get more information on the new Mitsubishi Triton, but let's get right into it.
00:44 So let's kick off with what is the Mitsubishi Triton. So, it is a dual-cab ute that is sold
00:49 around the world. In Australia, it is a, I guess, a value proposition. So, it's not as
00:54 expensive as something like a Toyota Hilux or a Ford Ranger, but it still gives you a
00:58 lot of the stuff that you'd need without all those frills. It seems to me that Mitsubishi
01:02 is going to continue down that path. We do have some sources that have given us some
01:06 information and we now have some further details from Mitsubishi in terms of the design. One
01:12 of the things that is worth pointing out early on is that it is likely to have a plug-in
01:16 hybrid at some point within its life. So, Mitsubishi has told us on the record that
01:21 they are looking to electrify the Triton, and that means giving it technology such as
01:25 plug-in hybrid, which is currently found on things like the Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in
01:30 hybrid, also the Eclipse Cross as well. So, they have the technology there and they could
01:33 be the first to market with that kind of tech. And it is big for commercial organizations
01:38 who need to tick boxes. And it means they don't have to spend mega dollars on something
01:42 like the electric version of the LDV-T60, which is incredibly expensive compared to
01:47 most other dual-cab utes on the market.
01:49 Now let's talk about the design. I'm going to start off with our renders here. I'm going
01:55 to do some sort of squiggling and colouring in here as well so you can see what I'm seeing.
02:00 Our renderer has done a really good job here because he's based this off a concept that
02:04 was shown for the Beijing Motor Show, and it kind of gives you a bit of an idea of where
02:09 Mitsubishi is heading with everything. So, this is kind of an off-road version that we've
02:12 rendered here. You can see straight away up the front here, they've gone down the path
02:16 of splitting those headlights. So, you've got an LED daytime running light at the top,
02:20 and then you have the headlight cluster just beneath it. And then in addition to that,
02:24 you have fog lights all the way down the bottom there. That's going to mean that this probably
02:27 has LED headlights, hopefully a bi-LED setup as well. Mitsubishi's headlights are typically
02:34 pretty good, but we have seen with Triton that it has lagged behind a little bit in
02:37 terms of headlight technology, and I think this kind of setup here will really bridge
02:41 the gap that it needs to bridge.
02:43 It is interesting though, we did notice with the LDV-T60 when they moved to that two-tier
02:47 setup that it really affected things like a big bumper or a big bull bar that you want
02:52 to fit on the front, because all of a sudden you have to engineer it to work for the safety
02:55 system, such as that radar sensor there, the camera directly above it as well. And then
03:00 you also have to allow for the headlights to work too. So, there are a lot of openings
03:04 there that you have to kind of compromise your bull bar to actually fit around. It is
03:08 worth pointing out as well at the same time that the concept has shown us that it will
03:12 come with a 360 camera. So, you can see a camera nestled in there. You can also see
03:16 a camera nestled in over here as well under that wing mirror. That means that this is
03:22 likely to have a 360 degree camera setup. Hoping the camera quality is good. In the
03:26 Outlander, the camera quality is actually pretty good, so hopefully they use that same
03:29 technology here in Triton to deliver that decent camera quality when you are off-roading.
03:34 We did notice as well in the Spy photos that Mitsubishi has unfortunately retained drum
03:41 brakes. It is a bit hard to see, but in this particular picture and in the other Spy photos
03:45 we've had, it shows that there are still drum brakes here behind the rear wheels. And look,
03:50 to be honest, that doesn't make any sense to me. You're building a car on a brand new
03:54 platform for a brand new generation. This is going to have a shared platform with the
03:57 Nissan Navara as well, and then you're still fitting drum brakes to the rear. It almost
04:02 feels prehistoric when you consider things like Hilux and also Ranger, at least in top
04:06 specs are now available with disc brakes that really sort of modernize that vehicle.
04:11 The other thing that has really irritated me as well, and I'm going to go back to my
04:15 little drawing tool here, is this. Look at that. That camera is still offset. One of
04:22 the things that we noticed during our big towing test recently, and if you haven't seen
04:25 that video, click up here, where we tested every dual cab ute on the market and we tested
04:31 the towing systems. And that offset camera meant that when you were mounting a trailer
04:35 to the vehicle, it wouldn't be central. So when you were reversing it, nothing was kind
04:39 of lining up. Most other dual cab utes on the market will actually fit the camera dead
04:43 centre and that means when the camera is there, you have direct line of sight to your tow
04:46 bar and it means that when you do connect it all in, there is little effort required
04:50 to line everything up.
04:51 The other thing you'll notice on the back here as well is Mitsubishi is persisting with
04:55 incandescent lighting. Again, a vehicle that's going to be released in 2023, it needs to
05:01 be LED and it looks like they haven't gone down the path of doing that. We'll jump back
05:05 over to our actual renders here so you can have a bit of a clearer look at what the aggressive
05:12 version of this is going to look like.
05:14 So this is the rear. You'll notice here that they've gone down the path of adding a bit
05:17 of taper there to those taillights. So keep in mind, this is just our artist's impression
05:22 of spy photos and also the pictures that we've seen. So a little bit of depth there to the
05:26 rear and then the light sort of tapered down and inwards a bit there just to give you a
05:30 bit more profile. And again, as I mentioned, incandescent globes there. There will probably
05:34 be some LED element up the top there, but for the most part, it'll be incandescent and
05:39 then that's a clearer look there of that camera that isn't mounted directly in line with the
05:45 tow bar.
05:46 I would like to see the return of the lip up the top. So we did see in the spy photos
05:50 that Mitsubishi has put a plastic lip up the top. Nissan had it on the Navara and they
05:56 removed it. Mitsubishi has put it back here. Like I said before, this is going to have
06:00 a shared platform in the Navara. So having that in place there means if you do load stuff
06:04 into the tray and have it sitting out, we'll prevent that from getting scratched up.
06:07 Other thing, hopefully, that it will come with is a torsion bar here. When you do drop
06:11 that tailgate down, it'll make closing it a little bit easier as well. We don't have
06:16 a side step. Well, we haven't seen a side step here. So Ford with the Ranger seems to
06:20 be the only one at the moment that has that side step integrated. It'll retain leaf springs
06:24 at the rear, even though Navara went down the path of coil springs, it looks like Mitsubishi
06:29 will keep leaf springs within the Triton.
06:32 It's worth keeping in mind that they are doing a lot of tuning work to Triton in Australia.
06:36 They've said that on the record. So hopefully that means the ride will at least be nice
06:39 and compliant for Australian conditions. Keep in mind this one here is a bit of an aggressive
06:43 looking thing we've mocked up. So it's probably not going to have all of those side scoops
06:47 and stuff like that, but it gives you a bit of an idea of what they could do with a rally
06:51 art version of this with those big sports bars up the top there.
06:55 Let's talk about interior. One of the things we noticed in one of the spy photos is this.
07:01 And there's a bit of a backstory to this, but with these camouflaged vehicles, when
07:06 they are driving around, they'll often have like a material that they put over the dashboard.
07:11 When the vehicle is parked, it means you don't get to see what the interior looks like. When
07:15 it is driving around though, the driver needs to be able to change climate controls, radio,
07:18 that type of thing. And often they'll uncover it briefly. And you can see here as the driver
07:23 has gone to cover that back up again. This is an indicator to me that it's going to have
07:27 the same infotainment system as the Outlander. What makes me think that, look at that taper
07:32 there that cuts down. If we then jump over to our shots here of the Mitsubishi Outlander's
07:38 infotainment system, you can see it has the exact same taper there. So I think that they're
07:43 going to fit that same infotainment system, which is a good thing. It's nice and sharp,
07:48 easy to use, comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. So it is a really good system
07:52 they can be integrating into Triton. And it looks like it'll sit nice and high as well
07:56 there, so you get good visibility while you're driving the vehicle into that. And just so
08:00 you can have a little bit of a refresher, this is what it looks like inside the Outlander
08:04 as well. So sits up the top there, screen central with actual physical controls either
08:09 side of it. Hopefully they'll also fit a digital display like they've got there in the Outlander
08:14 as well. We did notice on the Spy Photos that it looks like they're going to have more rear
08:18 leg room. So that door looks like it opens a little bigger than it does on the current
08:22 generation Triton. That'll mean that you have a bit more space afforded in the back. Spy
08:26 photos also show us that they have some kind of a permanent roof rail system set up there
08:31 with the antenna located at the front of the vehicle. And that'll probably point backwards.
08:36 You can actually see a physical antenna sticking out of there. So hopefully it's not like the
08:40 Ranger that has a shark fin aerial and then another aerial that sticks out of there as
08:43 well. So I've showed you there what the aggressive version of the Triton will look like, but
08:47 here is just your standard one. It's a little more simplified, but again, same story. You
08:50 have that split headlight design up the front here with fog light section at the bottom
08:56 and then daytime running light at the top. Big Mitsubishi logo there, big grille as well.
09:01 And then underbody here, it looks like they have rated tow hooks. Certainly it looks very
09:06 similar to the D-MAX. I am hoping that they follow that trend and make them rated recovery
09:11 points as well so you don't run into any dramas. On the safety system front, this will come
09:14 with autonomous emergency braking and hopefully a full suite of technology that we find in
09:18 vehicles like the Ford Ranger and the Toyota Hilux today. This is what the back of the
09:23 standard one looks like as well. It's all sort of pretty straightforward there.
09:27 So that has been your first look at the new Mitsubishi Triton. We are expecting it to
09:33 be released in 2023 and it'll go on sale either late 2023 or early 2024. There is still a
09:39 lot of development work going on with this. And in terms of the engines, I am hoping that
09:43 they go down the path of a V6 diesel and at the very least, they really amp up the current
09:48 generation diesel to have at least 500Nm of torque. Hopefully they stick as well with
09:52 the Super Select 4WD system we found during our big dual-cabute off-road test. And if
09:57 you haven't seen that one, click up there. The Triton actually did incredibly well despite
10:01 the fact that the platform is so old. So let's hope that Mitsubishi continues that trend
10:05 with Super Select 4WD and we have the availability of a full-time 4WD system that you can drive
10:11 on sealed surfaces as well.
10:12 So let me know what you reckon about the new Mitsubishi Triton. I know that I've talked
10:17 a lot at you today, but I just wanted to share all of the information that we have on it
10:21 so far. When we do get more details, we will update you as much as we possibly can. Let
10:25 me know in the comments section below, what do you think about this design? Do you think
10:28 it's aggressive enough? Do you want to see a full-on rally art version that is kind of
10:32 a Raptor in disguise as well? Let me know what you think in the comments section below.
10:37 If you did enjoy this video, please make sure you like it and you share it with your mates.
