00:00 G'day, I'm Paul.
00:01 So are you sick of waiting like 12, 18 months
00:04 for your RAV4 Hybrid?
00:05 I might have an answer for you,
00:07 and it's this here, Haval H6.
00:09 So we've reviewed this car before.
00:11 You guys actually liked it quite a lot.
00:12 It got a stack of views in a very short amount of time,
00:15 but these guys now have a hybrid available in Australia.
00:18 It's called the Haval H6 Hybrid,
00:21 and it's in the ultra trim.
00:23 So it's right up there in terms
00:25 of how much spec they throw at it.
00:26 This is priced at just under $46,000 drive away,
00:30 but if that's too expensive,
00:31 the whole range kicks off at a little under 35 grand,
00:34 but that's not for the hybrid variant.
00:36 Now this competes with things like the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid,
00:39 the Subaru Forester Hybrid, and the MG HS PH EV.
00:44 Bit of a mouthful there.
00:45 Today we're gonna do a detailed review of this car,
00:47 so if you do wanna skip ahead to other parts of this review,
00:50 you can use the time codes on the screen,
00:52 or if you're on YouTube,
00:53 you can scroll down and use the chapters below.
00:55 And if you haven't done so already,
00:57 subscribe to our channel and press the bell icon.
01:01 That way you can find out every single time
01:03 I get attacked by flies.
01:04 So let's talk exterior.
01:07 You've got seven colors to pick from.
01:09 All but white is an additional 500-ish dollars.
01:12 Now I've mentioned before with the design of the H6
01:14 that I actually reckon it looks good.
01:16 It's stylish, it looks and feels premium,
01:18 despite having an affordable price.
01:21 Now the hybrid has a slightly different design
01:22 at the front here.
01:23 You'll notice these side edges
01:24 and this grille design just look different
01:26 to other H6 models,
01:27 so you will be able to tell the hybrid
01:29 apart from other vehicles out on,
01:31 other H6s out on the road.
01:33 Big Haval logo there.
01:34 You've got a sensor down here for the radar,
01:37 and then a little bit of cooling there
01:38 for that hybrid drivetrain.
01:40 Now this is a fascinating engine.
01:41 I'll go into a bit more detail when we do go for a drive,
01:43 but instead of being naturally aspirated,
01:45 they use a turbocharged petrol engine
01:47 in addition to the hybrid drivetrain.
01:49 So a little more advanced
01:51 than some of the other hybrids on the market.
01:52 So I'm looking forward to seeing
01:54 how that drives in real life.
01:55 Chrome lashings down the bottom there,
01:57 and if we jump up to the top here,
01:59 you've got a set of LED headlights.
02:02 These work excellent at nighttime.
02:04 LED daytime running light,
02:05 LED indicator, LED fog light as well.
02:07 So it is a fully featured setup.
02:10 Whip around to the side.
02:12 Down here you've got a set of 19-inch alloy wheels.
02:14 Quite like that design.
02:15 It sort of has a semi-matte finish to it,
02:18 and it really, again,
02:19 adds to the premium look and feel of the car.
02:21 You've got these wheel arch protectors here.
02:24 Now, you've got a ground clearance of 170 millimetres,
02:26 which isn't a great deal,
02:28 and this is only front-wheel drive,
02:30 but we did actually shoot a comparison
02:33 between this and other medium SUVs
02:35 in the segment off-road.
02:36 We did some light off-roading,
02:38 and we're pretty surprised how far this actually went.
02:40 Now, if you do wanna watch that,
02:41 click up here to check out
02:43 our medium SUV off-road comparison.
02:47 A little bit more chrome over here.
02:48 You've got piano black
02:50 on the lower side of the wing mirror.
02:52 In addition to that,
02:52 you have a camera here for the 360 camera
02:54 and an indicator built into the wing mirror.
02:57 We've got privacy glass.
02:58 You've got a panoramic sunroof, roof rails,
03:02 and then come around to the back.
03:04 Now, you're gonna notice this on the road
03:06 in comparison to other cars
03:07 because this whole strip here lights up at night time,
03:10 so it's really quite pronounced
03:11 when it is out on the road and the lights are on.
03:13 So that is sort of unique to the H6.
03:16 Have all branding here.
03:17 GWM, which stands for Great Wall Motors,
03:20 and then down here, H6 HEV, which is the hybrid.
03:24 Now, this is unique to the hybrid as well.
03:25 Dual brake lights.
03:27 No idea why they've gone with dual brake lights
03:29 for the hybrid, but that is a point of difference.
03:31 You have a shark fin aerial up the top there
03:33 and this sort of spoiler thing here as well.
03:36 So one thing I did notice,
03:38 when you do fit slimline plates to these,
03:40 it exposes these bits that are built into the body.
03:43 So if you do buy one of these,
03:44 don't go for slimline plates
03:46 'cause it just looks a bit strange
03:47 having these exposed parts down here.
03:48 You're better off just getting a bigger number plate
03:50 just to cover that up.
03:51 So let me know what you think about the design of the H6 here
03:55 especially in hybrid trim with all this stuff
03:57 and the front end differences.
03:58 Can feed feedback.
03:59 Do you think it looks as stylish and premium
04:02 as I think it does?
04:03 Let me know down there.
04:04 So we are inside the H6.
04:06 We'll start off with the key.
04:07 So you've got a panic button, lock, boot,
04:11 unlock, a little bit of chrome on the side there,
04:14 and then have a on the back.
04:17 Now it's a proximity sensing key.
04:18 So that can just stay in your pocket
04:20 and then you have a push button start down here.
04:22 Look, I think this interior is really nicely presented.
04:25 If you park this next to a RAV4,
04:28 RAV4 actually feels really quite dated
04:31 in terms of things like the infotainment
04:33 and the driver display.
04:34 This has a really big infotainment screen there,
04:36 a nice driver display ahead of the driver,
04:38 a head up display, which you still don't get in a RAV4.
04:40 So I think that they have gone to a lot of effort
04:42 to make this look and feel premium.
04:45 It is disappointing that there is so much piano black
04:47 around here and you can see it is already filthy,
04:49 especially here on the door.
04:50 These high touch surfaces just get so dirty so quickly.
04:53 So yeah, I don't know why they insist on using it,
04:56 but piano black is everywhere.
04:58 Now in terms of all of your touch points,
05:00 so center console, it's pretty firm,
05:02 but not too bad to rest on.
05:04 The door isn't too bad either.
05:06 How firm are they?
05:07 Well, we've measured the main surfaces
05:09 in this cabin with our durometer.
05:10 If you want to see how this car compares
05:12 to others that we've tested before,
05:13 have a look at the link in the description.
05:15 I will point out one of the things
05:16 I am a little disappointed with
05:18 is how firm this center section is.
05:20 When I was driving here this morning,
05:21 my knee was resting on that
05:23 and that wasn't overly pleasant.
05:25 In terms of build quality though,
05:27 that all feels really nice and solid in our door test.
05:31 Sounds excellent.
05:34 Let's talk infotainment.
05:36 So you get a 12.3 inch display here.
05:38 It's a color touchscreen.
05:39 And then ahead of the driver,
05:40 you have a smaller 10.25 inch unit.
05:44 This infotainment system's great.
05:45 And when you look at this segment,
05:47 the segment is kind of a mishmash of infotainment systems.
05:50 Some are bigger, some are smaller,
05:52 but what they've done here is really just gone
05:54 for a high quality screen
05:55 that gives you everything that you need.
05:56 It's easy to use.
05:57 It works quite fast and efficiently.
05:59 And then it has smartphone mirroring.
06:01 So you don't have navigation built into it,
06:03 but a lot of brands are now moving into the space
06:05 where navigation built into screens
06:06 is kind of not really happening anymore
06:08 'cause you've got to worry about updating
06:10 and that kind of thing,
06:10 whereas on your phone, it's just always up to date.
06:12 On the radio front, you just have AM and FM radio.
06:15 It's a little bit disappointing.
06:16 I would have liked to see a DAB digital radio there,
06:19 but you can stream music from your phone if you need to.
06:22 And that's all driven through an eight speaker sound system.
06:25 On the smartphone mirroring front,
06:27 you have both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
06:29 They're both wired.
06:30 So this is what Apple CarPlay looks like.
06:32 Full screen integration, pretty quick there.
06:34 Tiny bit laggy, but for the most part,
06:36 that's actually not too bad.
06:38 I'll show you what Android Auto looks like.
06:40 There it is there.
06:42 So full screen integration.
06:43 And then when you exit the map menu,
06:44 you get maps on the side there
06:47 while you can then scroll up and down on this side.
06:50 The screen ahead of the driver,
06:50 this teams up with the head up display
06:53 to give you everything that you need.
06:54 It's pretty straightforward.
06:55 You've got the right hand side of controls
06:57 that allow you to move through different menus on the screen
07:00 while your left hand side controls things like your audio
07:03 and cruise control is down here.
07:04 So really good, easy to read,
07:06 very sharp and clear as well.
07:08 Now, what about your safety tech?
07:09 Up the top here, you have autonomous emergency braking
07:13 with pedestrian, cyclist and junction assist.
07:17 So it's a pretty powerful system.
07:18 You've got an auto dimming rear vision mirror,
07:20 blind spot monitoring built into the wing mirror,
07:22 lane departure warning, lane keeping assistant.
07:26 You have radar cruise control.
07:28 Then on the parking front,
07:28 you have both front and rear parking sensors
07:30 and a 360 camera.
07:32 I'll give you a little look at that.
07:33 So this is your 3D view.
07:35 You can manipulate that with your finger just like this.
07:39 Then in addition to that,
07:40 you can switch between different views.
07:43 Now, what we've started doing,
07:44 we've put a label on the suitcase there
07:46 so we can actually try and read it
07:48 when it is parked behind the car
07:49 to give you an idea of the quality of the camera.
07:51 And look at that, that is so sharp.
07:53 Now this actually has 720p cameras,
07:55 so it is very high resolution
07:57 and it means that you can easily make out things like that.
07:59 You then have different zoom functions as well,
08:02 depending on exactly what you want the car to do,
08:04 plus a semi-autonomous parking function.
08:08 So it is a pretty fully featured system
08:11 and it is impressive to see
08:12 that this is just standard equipment on the H6.
08:15 Moving on to practicality,
08:17 where are you gonna charge your devices?
08:18 So you have a wireless charging pad just here,
08:22 so you can whack your phone on that if you want to.
08:24 You've got one USB down here,
08:25 which is a bit tricky to reach.
08:27 USB on my side, you also have a 12-volt outlet.
08:30 At the top here, if you wanna run a dash cam,
08:32 you've got a USB up there too,
08:33 so plenty of options there.
08:35 Storage, your phone can live on the charger there
08:37 or you can slot it there or in the cup holder.
08:40 There's plenty of storage spaces, which is great.
08:42 Coffee cup.
08:43 Now I found out this morning
08:45 that this doesn't really work all that well
08:46 because you've got a little divider there
08:48 that you can retract if you need to,
08:50 but your coffee kinda just sits on a weird angle
08:54 and it's a bit tricky to reach.
08:55 So I kinda just prop it up with my key
08:57 to make sure it's not spillable.
08:59 But in terms of your bottle,
09:00 it fits in there without too many dramas.
09:02 Try a big bottle.
09:03 Okay, so that fits into there if you retract it,
09:07 which is cool.
09:08 We'll see if this fits inside the door.
09:09 Kinda gotta jam it in there, but it does fit eventually.
09:14 In addition to the door storage,
09:15 you've got storage down here for keys.
09:18 You've got more storage here in the center console,
09:21 very deep down there, so plenty of room,
09:23 which is good to see.
09:24 Plus stacks of storage down here.
09:26 Glove box, that's not too bad.
09:28 It's all pretty reasonably sized,
09:29 even with the manual in there.
09:30 And finally, you've got a sunglasses holder up the top.
09:34 On Comfort, you have dual zone automatic climate control.
09:38 You've got heated seats for both the driver
09:40 and front passenger.
09:41 You've got a heated steering wheel.
09:43 In terms of seat adjustment, you can go forwards or backwards.
09:47 The backrest can go forwards, backwards.
09:49 You can lift the seat.
09:51 You also have lumbar adjustment.
09:53 Passenger seat is electric as well.
09:55 On seat comfort, these seats really aren't very comfortable.
09:59 We did a bit of a longer drive to get here today,
10:01 and I don't know, I just felt that they weren't
10:02 really comfortable in addition
10:03 to this hard plastic thing here.
10:06 The other problem as well is I can't just lift
10:07 the front of the seat.
10:09 I feel like I'm sliding out of the seat constantly.
10:11 So yeah, a couple of adjustments
10:13 on seat comfort would be better there,
10:15 but they look pretty cool.
10:16 You've got this section cut out of them
10:18 through the middle there,
10:19 and they've got a bit of a cool design to them.
10:21 So yeah, big tick on that,
10:22 but a little bit more comfort, please have it.
10:24 So second row, the H6.
10:26 I'm just constantly surprised how much room there is here.
10:28 Have a look at this.
10:29 Heaps of knee room, plenty of toe room,
10:32 really good headroom as well.
10:34 For this segment, especially if you compare it
10:36 to something like a CX-5,
10:37 there is just so much space inside this cabin.
10:40 So it is pretty surprising when you look at it
10:42 from the outside, how much space they've carved out
10:45 inside the cabin.
10:46 In terms of other creature comforts,
10:47 you've got air vents here, you've got two USB ports,
10:51 you've got matte pockets in the back of the seats,
10:53 you have ISOFIX points for your two outboard seats
10:56 with three top tether points.
10:57 Center armrest here with two cup holders.
11:00 Fits your bottle in perfectly fine
11:01 with little grippy sections.
11:03 Bottle fits inside the, actually, no it doesn't.
11:06 There you go.
11:07 Well, it does, but it's just really awkward.
11:09 I don't know why they don't have a cutout there for a bottle.
11:12 Bit strange.
11:13 Window, doesn't go down all the way.
11:15 Now it's auto down and auto up.
11:17 Not quite, just misses out on going down all the way,
11:20 but pretty close.
11:21 And then we wrap it up with this big panoramic sunroof
11:24 up the top.
11:26 Let's talk cargo space.
11:27 So we'll crack this open.
11:28 Now, being a hybrid, they mount the batteries
11:31 under the boot floor, and I'll show you that in a second.
11:33 Normally that means you get less space,
11:35 but what they've done here is they've removed
11:36 the spare tire as well, so you have a repair kit instead.
11:39 So this is the cavity that you have, 600 litres.
11:42 You get storage off to the sides,
11:44 and then if you look under here,
11:46 you'll find that tire repair kit and a compressor.
11:49 And then if you look under this section,
11:51 I'll whip this up quickly,
11:52 what you'll find is the 12 volt battery,
11:54 but also look at this,
11:56 that is the 1.8 kilowatt hour battery pack
11:59 that they use for the hybrid system.
12:01 So really interesting setup.
12:03 Normally they hide this stuff and you can't see it,
12:05 but it is cool to be able to see how this works
12:07 and how the cooling system works as well.
12:09 So yeah, pretty interesting setup.
12:12 Yeah, how does it fit our bags?
12:14 Let's give them a shot.
12:15 So that goes in there,
12:19 and the other bag goes in here.
12:22 So plenty of space there, which is good,
12:24 and a big opening too, so the lip is massive there.
12:28 And then finally, let's have a look at the expanded space.
12:31 So no remote release, you've got to do it from here.
12:34 But once you do drop that down,
12:35 you have a little under 1500 litres of cargo capacity.
12:39 So we've hit the road in the H6 Hybrid.
12:45 This is a really interesting drive train
12:48 because it's not like a typical hybrid
12:51 where they just bolt on some batteries,
12:52 use an existing gearbox, and away they go.
12:55 They've gone down the path of a fully integrated system
12:58 with a two-speed transmission.
13:00 And it's quite fascinating
13:01 because it's not like a traditional transmission
13:03 that has five or six gears.
13:05 It has two separate gears that act as CVTs,
13:08 and there are imperceptible shifts
13:10 between those two gears as the car drives.
13:12 And this feels much like the RAV4 Hybrid when it's moving.
13:15 So it takes off in that EV mode, nice and quiet,
13:18 and then as you get up to speed,
13:19 it will kick on the internal combustion engine as required.
13:22 Now, the internal combustion engine in this
13:23 is a one and a half litre turbocharged
13:26 four-cylinder petrol engine.
13:27 A lot of the other hybrids in this segment
13:29 use naturally aspirated engines.
13:31 So that means you're getting a little bit more poke
13:33 when you do jump on the throttle with this
13:34 because your hybrid components fill in
13:37 the lower end of the rev band,
13:38 and then once the turbo is spooling,
13:40 you're basically then fixing that top end as well.
13:42 So the internal combustion engine
13:44 makes 110 kilowatts of power and 230 newton metres of torque.
13:48 So not a huge amount, but it is supplemented
13:50 by that hybrid drivetrain.
13:51 The hybrid drivetrain has a 130 kilowatt motor
13:55 and 300 newton metres of torque.
13:57 And that all combines to 179 kilowatts of power
14:00 and 530 newton metres of torque.
14:03 That is a big old slab of torque,
14:04 especially for a front wheel drive.
14:07 That's probably the only disappointment here
14:09 that this isn't available as an all-wheel drive
14:10 because I think if they did add
14:12 a second electric motor to this,
14:14 it's really quite good now,
14:15 but I think it would really transform the character of it.
14:17 Yeah, how quiet is it?
14:19 It's actually quite good
14:20 because they're not using a very thrashy sounding engine.
14:24 It's got a turbocharger on it.
14:25 It's got a bit of rasp when you get up it.
14:27 So if you do sink the boot in,
14:30 you get that kick in the back immediately
14:32 from the electric components,
14:33 and then you hear the internal combustion engine come on,
14:36 but it doesn't rev out of control.
14:38 It really doesn't penetrate into the cabin
14:40 in terms of the noise.
14:41 So it is quite a sort of quiet and civil place to be seated.
14:44 Now let's talk about ride.
14:45 The last H6 that we drove was really choppy on our sine wave.
14:50 So I'm gonna put this up to 130 Ks an hour again,
14:54 which is the maximum speed in Australia.
14:57 And we'll see how this performs as a comparison.
14:59 Keep in mind, this has a bit more weight in the boot
15:01 thanks to that battery system.
15:03 (groans)
15:06 Yeah, this is really not very good.
15:08 So it feels the same as the other H6 that we drove
15:10 where it just sits in the air for way too long.
15:14 And while the ride is quite bouncy,
15:17 especially over our sine waves,
15:18 there's a lack of body control at that upper end.
15:21 When you are at lower speeds, it's really comfortable.
15:24 It's very soft and reassuring.
15:27 And it's quite, you know, I don't know,
15:29 if you had it full of your family and stuff like that,
15:31 it would actually be a comfortable highway cruiser.
15:33 It just comes apart a little bit
15:34 when you hit those consecutive bumps at highway speeds.
15:37 What's it like as you're just driving along?
15:39 We've got our coarse chip surface here.
15:41 There is a bit of tire noise that comes into the cabin,
15:43 but it really isn't the end of the world.
15:45 It's a sort of pretty civil place to be seated
15:47 and it's not over the top in terms of tire roar.
15:50 There is an interesting point here with regen.
15:52 As you roll out of the throttle,
15:53 you can actually set how much regen you want.
15:55 Right now it's in the most aggressive setting.
15:57 It's actually quite adequate
15:58 in terms of how much it's regening.
16:00 And we've got a little meter down the bottom here
16:02 that tells us how much charge we're adding to the battery.
16:05 And I love that.
16:06 So you go into the throttle, it's got power.
16:09 And then as you go onto the brakes
16:10 or let out of the throttle, it goes into charge.
16:12 So it's a good setup.
16:13 And then on the screen here as well,
16:14 we can see how the system is being fed,
16:17 whether it's just by the batteries
16:18 or whether it's using the internal combustion engine.
16:21 Let's talk fuel economy.
16:22 So Havel claims a combined fuel economy
16:24 of just over five litres per 100 kilometres.
16:27 We're currently averaging 7.7,
16:29 but I will point something out here.
16:31 On the drive here, I was averaging six litres per 100 ks
16:35 because it's been darting around here a little bit
16:37 and sitting idle.
16:38 It's come up in terms of where it was,
16:41 but six litres per 100 ks for a vehicle this size
16:44 is really impressive.
16:45 It's not quite as sharp as a RAV4,
16:47 which can sit under five litres per 100 ks,
16:50 but this is a really good figure.
16:51 And I think that if you did have a few more miles
16:53 under its belt,
16:54 and really got a tune of how this system works,
16:57 you could actually bring that number down.
16:59 Now, what's it like if we put it into sport?
17:01 Flick that across, it randomly flashes the hazard lights.
17:04 We'll pop it into our corner here.
17:08 Yeah, because of that.
17:10 (laughs)
17:11 Really soft suspension.
17:13 It has a lot of body roll, but tell you what,
17:16 when you do actually get up it,
17:17 it's quite responsive and it's pretty engaging to drive.
17:21 It sort of picks up and moves.
17:23 And it's actually surprising how much urge it has,
17:27 regardless of where you are in the rev band.
17:28 It feels way punchier than something like a RAV4,
17:31 certainly the front-wheel drive version of the RAV4.
17:33 And it's such a well-sorted system that it is so smooth,
17:36 you really don't notice any of those shifts
17:38 between the internal combustion engine
17:40 and the electric components.
17:42 I know I'm harping on about this,
17:45 but I'm genuinely surprised how well this hybrid is working,
17:48 both at low speeds and when the car's moving.
17:51 It's switching between full EV mode.
17:53 Like right now we're doing 70 Ks an hour
17:54 and it's in full EV mode,
17:56 so we're not using any of that internal combustion engine.
17:58 It's all being powered by the 1.8 kilowatt hour battery.
18:01 So I don't know,
18:02 I just wasn't expecting it to be as good as this is.
18:04 And if anything, it feels as good,
18:05 if not better than a RAV4 hybrid
18:07 in terms of how smooth and compliant it is.
18:09 Now we don't have an official zero to 100 time
18:12 from Haval for the hybrid,
18:13 but this is how it went up against our stopwatch.
18:16 Now what about your visibility?
18:29 So I can see clearly down the front there,
18:31 there's pretty big wing mirrors
18:33 with blind spot monitors built into those.
18:35 Visibility out the back is okay,
18:36 but it's a very narrow envelope there for the window.
18:39 But for the most part, it's pretty straightforward,
18:41 especially with these high quality 360 camera.
18:43 You can park it very easily.
18:45 You've got the auto parking feature.
18:46 Really is a good setup.
18:48 So the Haval H6 hybrid,
18:54 I've got a confession to make.
18:55 I thought this was actually going to be not very good.
18:58 And I based that assumption on the fact that
19:00 stuff like the Subaru Forester hybrid
19:02 is just not very good at all.
19:04 The HS from MG, the PHEV, it's not amazing.
19:08 So I thought this was just going to be
19:09 more of the same thing.
19:10 And Toyota, to be honest, just leads the hybrid segment.
19:13 But this has changed my mind.
19:15 The way they've integrated that turbocharged petrol engine
19:18 with that sort of two-speed CVT style gearbox
19:22 with a 1.8 kilowatt hour battery is really impressive.
19:26 And if you are driving sensibly in and around town,
19:28 you're going to reap the rewards
19:29 of a fully hybrid drivetrain.
19:31 So yeah, I was super impressed with it.
19:33 In terms of things they can improve,
19:34 the body control is just not very good.
19:36 And we saw there on the sine waves
19:38 that it almost leaves the ground.
19:40 And that is something that they really need to work on.
19:42 And perhaps investing in Australian ride
19:44 and handling tuning is going to fix that problem.
19:47 Sorry to interrupt the video.
19:48 I just wanted to point out something I noticed
19:50 after spending a bit more time with the Haval H6
19:52 after we filmed it.
19:53 And that was the brake pedal feel.
19:55 It really wasn't very good.
19:56 The pedal would sometimes depress on its own
19:59 when it was in regen mode and the pedal would get firm.
20:01 It just really was a little bit unnerving.
20:03 So please make sure you do a test drive
20:05 before you buy one to make sure that you're happy with that.
20:07 I think that plus that body control issue
20:10 really needs addressing.
20:11 But outside of that, it did represent good value for money.
20:14 And it's actually pretty good to drive
20:16 outside of those two things.
