00:00 G'day, I'm Paul. So as you can see we've finally had a chance to check out the new Ford Ranger Raptor.
00:07 Ford invited us to an event where we could have a look at a prototype version of the car
00:12 and also one of the development vehicles as well. We now know the pricing too, it's just been revealed
00:16 $85,490 plus on-road costs. It's actually cheaper than I thought it was going to be. So I thought
00:23 it'd be closer to that $100,000 mark, so that's pretty impressive. Now I can't talk about drive
00:28 impressions but what I can talk about is our hot laps in Ford's development vehicles. So I'll run
00:33 you through that in just a second. We'll also run through some of the cool features that we got to
00:37 see on the new Ranger Raptor and play with ourselves. So let's get stuck straight into it.
00:42 So what were we doing? Well we're at this joint here, it's called Love Day and Love Day is a
00:49 four-wheel drive park in regional South Australia. Ford uses Love Day and also an off-road club in
00:56 Alice Springs which is in Central Australia to develop the Ranger Raptor and they first came to
01:01 Love Day last year sometime. So it's been a while now that they've actually been working on this
01:06 vehicle and fine-tuning it. The reason they use these facilities is because they test the car to
01:12 their absolute limits. So the terrain here at Love Day is a mix of sand, so you're getting that dune
01:18 element, you've got exposed rock, you've got gravel, it really is a great mix of terrain that tests
01:24 the Ranger Raptor and its Baja credentials because they really want this to be kind of a trophy truck
01:29 of the dual cab pickup world. And as you can imagine this being in the middle of nowhere
01:33 there isn't really a great deal to see but this four-wheel drive park is amazing. Now Ford uses a
01:39 seven kilometre stretch of road within the four-wheel drive park where they do their calibration
01:43 and their final testing. What Ford was doing here in particular when we were there is tuning the
01:48 Ranger Raptor for the US market because it's going to go on sale there. They wanted to make sure that
01:52 this car met the expectations of what customers over there currently have with things like F-150
01:57 Raptors, so it was important for them to get that tuning element right and they thought they'd invite
02:01 some media along to experience this and get a better understanding of how it works. So that
02:06 gives you a bit of context of what we were doing there. The cars that we had a chance to look at
02:10 and sit in and play with, these were camouflaged cars, they had roll cages, literally the entire
02:15 interior was ripped out and they fitted a roll cage and race seats to create a safe environment
02:21 for the test drivers. These guys were doing things like tuning suspension and also the steering to
02:25 make sure that it was going to be suitable for the US market. So a lot of effort was going into making
02:30 sure these last minute adjustments were going to make it into production. In addition to that they
02:34 had a few TT vehicles, these were the the tooling test vehicles and these basically come down the
02:39 production line and they're kind of representative of what the final product will look like but
02:44 kind of not really. They're like the first test run before they go okay this is all great,
02:49 let's start production. So that gives you a bit of context on what we were doing there and the
02:53 cars we had a chance to experience. Let's have a look at the old versus new comparison so you can
02:59 see them side by side and see for yourself the exact differences between them. Righto, let's
03:04 kick things off with old versus new. What are the differences visually between the old Raptor and
03:09 the new Raptor? So you'll notice when they're parked next to each other here that side by side
03:14 they kind of look similar in terms of width and that's because the previous generation of the
03:18 Ranger Raptor sat on a wider track than the standard Ranger but the new generation Ranger
03:24 actually adopted that wider track and so that sort of carries over. But it's more the top of
03:28 the car where you can see the differences. With the old car it kind of was wide at the bottom and
03:32 then tapered in at the top whereas with the new car it sits significantly wider at the top and it
03:37 looks far meatier on the road. I think part of that is to do with those c-clamp headlights, they sit
03:42 right on the edge of the body and it means that it very much emphasizes the width of the car and
03:46 from front on this looks exactly like a mini F-150 Raptor and I think that's what I love about it. It
03:52 has that F-150 Raptor vibe without having the enormous body that you need to try and fit on
03:57 Australian roads. So side by side they look different enough to tell that this is the old
04:02 one and this is the new one. Now what about the sound? I think the sound is the biggest change
04:06 here. The old one was a two litre diesel, this new one is a three litre turbocharged V6 petrol.
04:12 You couldn't get any more different in terms of the way they sound when they're sitting stationary.
04:16 Have a listen to this clip, this is the Ranger Raptor V6 revving while it's warm and I think
04:21 it has a soft limiter of some sort but it gives you a good idea of exactly what this is going
04:25 to sound like out on the road.
04:41 How good is that? So yeah it is linked to the drive modes. As you move between those drive
04:46 modes it gets progressively louder to Baja mode where it is its absolute loudest and you're going
04:52 to be able to hear this coming from a mile away. It really has a deep sonorous note to it and it
04:56 sounds unlike any other dual cab ute in this segment. So I mentioned earlier that we can't
05:03 talk about drive impressions but what I can talk about is my passenger lap in the development car.
05:10 So this circuit that they use at Love Day, it's about seven kilometres long and it's basically
05:15 attacked at 10 tenths and that's the whole reason this car has a roll cage. We sit in the car with a
05:20 fire retardant suit, a Hans device. If this car does roll and there's every chance it will with
05:26 the speed that they're doing through here, not saying the drivers aren't talented but
05:29 they have all of the precautions in place just in case anything like this happens.
05:33 And the whole reason they drive as hard as they do here, one of the cars had like 15,000
05:38 kilometres on the clock and its entire life was spent at this facility and the Alice Springs
05:44 facility. So it was doing flat chat for 15,000 kilometres which is absolutely remarkable and
05:50 the tyres at the end of our hot lap, you can see on the screen here now that they were absolutely
05:55 chewed to pieces. So it really gives you an idea of the terrain that they drive over during this
06:00 hot lap. It really tests the car to its absolute limit so that when a customer does hop into it,
06:06 they can kind of do whatever they want without damaging the vehicle. So
06:09 the sound. The sound while it's moving is pretty awesome. So you can hear lots of it inside the
06:15 cabin. They do plumb sound into the cabin but it's matched to what you're hearing outside.
06:20 So they basically have a sound file that matches the sound profile from the exhaust
06:24 and that's plumbed into the car. This car with no sound deadening meant that a lot of that noise
06:29 was naturally coming into the cabin and it sounded absolutely insane. In Baja mode the Raptor has
06:35 an anti-lag feature so it means that when the driver lets off the throttle,
06:38 keeps feeding the turbochargers, there's no lag when you get back onto the throttle.
06:43 And that much was evident from the passenger seat. When we'd come out of a corner and the
06:47 driver would get back onto the throttle, it would just pin you straight back in the seat.
06:50 This type of terrain, there is no traction. It's a mix of sand, gravel and then rocky gravel as
06:56 well. Big exposed rocks. In that type of terrain, even with all-wheel drive, you do struggle with
07:01 traction. This on the other hand just ripped through it without any problems at all. It feels
07:05 like a very well-sorted four-wheel drive system and one that they've spent a whole lot of time
07:10 tuning. So yeah, being able to go out in the development cars was great and it really just
07:14 gives us a different perspective of what this is going to be like when we finally get our chance
07:18 to take it out on the road and have a proper burn in it. Oh hey, by the way, because this video is
07:22 only so long, there is so much more information on the Ranger in terms of specs, pricing,
07:26 stock, all that sort of stuff. So if you do want to see more details on the Ranger,
07:30 the Ranger Raptor and the Everest, head to our website. I've got the links in the description
07:34 below. Let's talk about some of the other interesting things I noticed in these cars
07:37 when we were sort of poking around in them. This thing here is fascinating. So it's basically the
07:43 12-volt outlet in the tray. We don't know exactly what we'll get for Australia just yet, but we do
07:48 know that in the F-150 for example, they've been able to fit things like a 7-kilowatt power outlet
07:53 in the tray where the vehicle can act as a generator for those power outlets. So this
07:58 looks like the same plate size, which means they should be interchangeable. So it'd be really cool
08:02 to see if Ford actually developed something that slots right into there and you can use this at a
08:06 work site as a big power accessory if you do need to. So we'll be keeping an eye on that.
08:12 I do love the fact that with the drive modes, when you do change between them,
08:15 the screen changes in the background. So you get these different animations as you flick through
08:20 the drive modes. And you can see that Ford's gone to a lot of effort in presenting the tech in this
08:25 car and making sure that it is an exciting proposition for customers. So all the drive
08:29 modes that are visible there on the display come and change as you move through that drive mode
08:34 selector. In addition to the drive modes with the display changing the background there, when you
08:38 switch between the different four-wheel drive modes, you also get a visual change. So when you
08:42 enable the front or rear diff locks, you'll see that light up and then you have a screen in the
08:46 center of the car that allows you to press them on the fly as you go. So it means that being able
08:51 to select these drive modes is a pretty straightforward process. And then with the four-wheel
08:55 drive modes, if you do want further customization, you simply just press a few buttons and away it
08:59 goes. When you do change to low range, it will pop up on the screen telling you to put it into
09:03 neutral, but it is a pretty idiot-proof system. And the fact that it's all represented there ahead
09:08 of the driver, I think is a really great setup. In addition to that, if you are into four-wheel
09:11 driving, there is a camera there that looks out the front of the car and those guidelines move
09:16 with the steering wheel as well as the steering moves. So this is particularly handy if you're
09:20 doing a whole lot of off-roading where you can't see over the front of the car, being able to have
09:23 a camera that faces all the way down gives you visibility over a hump. So while you should still
09:28 be walking that terrain, this at least gives you an indication of where you need to place the tires
09:33 as you come over some of those blind crests. So this four-wheel drive equipment is going to be
09:37 great for novices and also great for experts who know exactly what they're doing. They really have
09:42 catered for both of those types of drivers. Now, a couple of interesting things I'll point out as
09:46 well. When you have a look at the paddle shifters, they've kept that metallic finish. So when you do
09:50 clink them with your fingers, you can hear that they are metallic. They're cold to the touch.
09:55 It's a small thing, but I think it's good that they have focused on that and made sure they
09:59 delivered that perception of quality to the driver. The other interesting thing as well is
10:04 Ford during the development of the car, noticed that with the exhaust, which was going to be
10:08 painted black in these cars, when they drove it over this terrain at Love Day, it was chipping
10:12 away at the black paint. So instead of keeping it black, they've actually changed it to a stainless
10:16 steel finish. And it means that you won't get that damage that you get when it is a painted surface.
10:21 So all of the testing that they're doing actually does make a difference in the long run. One other
10:26 thing worth pointing out is while the rest of the Ranger range allows you to have a second battery
10:31 under the bonnet, including Everest as well, with the Raptor, you're not going to be able to do that.
10:35 So there's an air box in the way of where the second battery goes in standard Ranger. That
10:39 means if you do want a second battery in your Raptor, it's going to have to go in the tray
10:42 instead of being nestled under the front there somewhere. So something worth just keeping in
10:47 mind. Okay, so let's wrap this up. What do I think about the new Ranger Raptor? Look,
10:53 I think Ford has done an incredible job with this. We will get a chance to properly drive the car,
10:58 and I'll be able to give you an in-depth review with actual driving impressions as well down the
11:03 track. But in my mind, this is untouchable in the dual cab ute market at the moment.
11:09 There is nothing that even comes close to offering what Ford has done here with Ranger Raptor.
11:13 And if you have a look at something like F-150 Raptor, it is a much bigger vehicle, and
11:18 it's just nowhere near as nimble as something like a Ranger Raptor. So this could be the ultimate
11:23 like daily and then rally vehicle and then off-road vehicle. It really just ticks all of
11:28 these boxes that we weren't expecting. And the tech inside it is just so impressive that again,
11:34 the rest of the competitors are just nowhere near Ford in terms of where they need to be with this.
11:38 So I'm excited for this. I'm excited to drive it. And let me know in the comments section below,
11:43 have you ordered one? Which color did you go for? Had a chance to see Code Orange in person,
11:48 and it's a pretty full-on color. So let me know if you have ordered Code Orange. And now that we
11:52 know the pricing as well, do you think it's too expensive? Do you think it's too cheap?
11:56 Let me know what you think about this because I think this is really going to shake up that
12:00 dual cab ute segment. So I'm well and truly excited for it, and I'm trying to convince my
12:05 wife that I need one of these in my life. So I will keep you posted on how that discussion goes.
12:09 Now, if you did enjoy this video, please make sure you share it with your mates. And if you
12:13 haven't done so already, subscribe to our channel and press the bell icon because that's going to
12:17 tell you every single time we publish one of these. We've already done a stack of videos on
12:21 Ranger, Raptor, and Everest. So if you scroll down to the description below, you'll see links to those
12:26 so you can have a little sticky beak as well.
12:28 But until next time, take it easy.
