00:03 Brennan Gulick and Anthony Meglin with you,
00:10 part of Brown's Digest, our coverage of the Cleveland
00:12 Browns on a day that was not good, not good, all the way
00:19 around.
00:19 29-12, score a gummy, right?
00:21 So you get an NFL score that's never happened.
00:25 Maybe that was the oddest thing to come out of the game.
00:30 Pretty tough day for the Browns, and it's
00:33 hard to figure out maybe where it was worst.
00:36 So let's just start with the injury component
00:38 to this, Anthony.
00:38 I don't know how much a team is supposed
00:44 to be able to have to handle during the course of a season,
00:47 but this is getting borderline ridiculous how many
00:49 of the injuries have just ravaged a Browns team
00:55 that has so much promise.
00:57 And again, to their credit for being
01:00 right in the thick of a playoff race
01:04 while dealing with all of these injuries.
01:06 But I mean, it blows my mind.
01:08 And I'll pull this up here so I can tell you exactly just off
01:14 the very top, guys that are hurt that would make you really
01:18 raise your eyebrows because this is ridiculous.
01:21 Nick Chubb, Deshaun Watson, Denzel Ward, Amari Cooper,
01:25 Jack Conklin, Anthony Walker, Jedrick Wills, Marquise
01:28 Goodwin, Rodney McLeod, today DTR, Jacob Phillips,
01:33 Jakeem Grant.
01:34 These are all guys that over the course of the season
01:37 are either currently injured or who have missed time.
01:40 And now Cleveland is looking at another quarterback problem
01:44 if DTR can't pass concussion protocol by the time
01:48 they play the Rams next weekend.
01:49 Because what we saw from PJ Walker at the end of the day
01:51 today was not good enough.
01:54 And so it becomes a race to get Joe Flacco ready.
01:57 Have you ever seen anything like this at any level?
01:59 I mean--
02:00 No.
02:00 It's unbelievable.
02:01 It's unbelievable.
02:03 The list you just said, I mean, everyone knows it by now.
02:06 But that's your starting running back,
02:08 starting quarterback, you're starting tackles.
02:10 So that's two there.
02:11 You're starting linebacker.
02:12 You're starting save through a corner.
02:14 You're back in the corner.
02:16 Hey, Cooper's injury wasn't a pillow fight either.
02:19 I mean, he took a helmet right to the ribs.
02:20 I mean, you never know what that's going to be.
02:22 But it's like, holy cow, man.
02:24 This team is 7-4.
02:25 Your record's good.
02:26 Yeah, today was a stinker from start to finish.
02:29 It felt weird.
02:30 It wasn't right from the start.
02:31 But then you just go and lose DTR and Amari Cooper.
02:34 You're like, gee, Pete, man.
02:36 How much more can this group take?
02:39 It's unfortunate.
02:41 I actually don't put Cooper's injury on a defender.
02:48 No.
02:48 Put that on a walker.
02:49 That's a bad guy, man.
02:51 He left him out there and he got killed.
02:54 I actually kind of liked what I saw from DTR today.
02:59 I love that kid's moxie, to borrow the word
03:01 from Kevin Stefanski.
03:04 He is competitive as hell.
03:07 He's tough.
03:08 He's pretty athletic.
03:10 He's aggressive.
03:12 He throws a good ball.
03:13 It's a little erratic.
03:15 He is far from being a polished NFL quarterback.
03:19 But there's something there.
03:21 And I hope he can recover quickly
03:25 because I think he could be a good answer for the Browns
03:29 in the meantime.
03:30 He's not going to be the team's starting quarterback when
03:32 Deshaun Watson gets back at full strength.
03:35 I mean, there's no way around that.
03:37 But you need a backup quarterback that
03:40 can play on a moment's notice.
03:41 Because if you haven't figured it out yet,
03:43 the Browns are looking at potentially playing
03:44 a quarterback in the first 12 games of the year.
03:47 And that's absurd.
03:49 And so you've got to have somebody that can do it.
03:51 And DTR looks pretty good.
03:52 Every single time he drops back to pass, or even is in the huddle,
03:55 or even taking a snap, I just think of Kevin Stefanski saying
03:59 how confident the kid is.
04:00 He doesn't lack for confidence.
04:02 And you can see that.
04:03 Just the way he guides his team, just the way he leads this
04:06 group, and just the belief he has in himself is amazing.
04:11 And it's kudos to him because not many people
04:14 are born with that.
04:14 So it is truly amazing.
04:16 But just like you said, he's never going to be--
04:19 in my opinion, obviously, he's played in three games.
04:21 So this is painting with a broad brushstroke.
04:23 But he's never going to be an everyday guy.
04:26 But we've seen, if Deshaun Watson's
04:28 going to be the long-term quarterback here in Cleveland,
04:30 I mean, he is fragile.
04:32 And the way he plays football, there
04:34 are going to be times when he does get banged up.
04:36 And we are going to need a guy to come back in.
04:38 And if Dorian Thompson-Robinson continues to get better,
04:42 obviously, his concussion is going to be a step back.
04:44 But if he continues to get better and improve,
04:47 why can't it be that kid?
04:48 I love watching him play.
04:49 And you saw growth today.
04:50 I mean, had he not gotten hurt, who knows what the final is?
04:53 But you love what you saw out of the young kid today.
04:58 I don't even judge him by his statistics
05:00 because, especially at this point in his career,
05:03 they're irrelevant to me.
05:06 He was playing winning football.
05:09 Final numbers, just because we'll share them with you,
05:12 we usually do 14 for 29, threw for 134 yards,
05:16 and his first NFL touchdown, he did not throw an interception.
05:20 But the Browns fumbled five times,
05:23 including three that they lost.
05:25 And ultimately, I think they put the defense
05:27 in some pretty tough spots.
05:28 And so that's a big reason why they lost this game.
05:32 Because you were in the middle of the third quarter,
05:36 and it didn't look so bad, right?
05:38 I mean, it wasn't even middle of third quarter.
05:42 It was a long quarter.
05:44 When Denver had to settle for a field goal to go up 17-12,
05:49 you felt like, hey, you're still--
05:51 you are one score away from being right back in this thing.
05:56 And obviously, the drop two-point conversion
06:00 was a real bummer.
06:01 But that whole drive, I felt like, hey,
06:04 DTR just grew up before our eyes.
06:07 And you know what's most impressive to me
06:09 is that you get down 14-0, and you have a rookie quarterback,
06:13 and it's not going well.
06:14 Nothing is going the right way.
06:16 Denver's running it all down your defense's throat.
06:18 You can't do anything on offense.
06:20 Imagine being that rookie quarterback
06:22 and potentially just packing up shop and be like, all right,
06:24 we're on to LA.
06:26 I'm going home.
06:26 I'm going to see a bunch of my friends next week.
06:29 But no, that was my favorite part about it.
06:30 Throw the stats out the window and all that.
06:32 I mean, the kid's stuck in there, man.
06:34 It would have been so easy to just give up and quit.
06:36 Leads the team down to cut it to 14-3.
06:39 Then the defense gets a stop.
06:41 And you're like, OK, if we can go down and score,
06:44 you're in this thing.
06:44 They get it down to first and goal and just a couple--
06:47 I mean, that ball to David Bell just bouncing off
06:50 the defensive tackle's shoulder pad.
06:52 It's like, oh my gosh.
06:53 That would have been a touchdown.
06:54 You cut it to 14-10.
06:55 You never know how those things change it.
06:57 But just the gutsiness that DTR was showing
07:01 and just the unwillingness to quit, man.
07:03 He's stuck in there.
07:05 That's the impressive part.
07:06 That's the stuff that you take away, because he's got it.
07:09 Whatever it is, he's got it in him
07:11 to be that competitive guy.
07:14 Yeah, and even in the second quarter,
07:15 I mean, ultimately, you don't want to settle for field goals.
07:20 But good drives kind of getting put together.
07:23 13 plays, 57 yards, ends in a field goal about six minutes
07:28 left in the second quarter.
07:29 Then the Browns kick a field goal with 22 seconds
07:32 left before halftime on an 11-play, 67-yard drive
07:36 that took 242.
07:39 I think Dorian is pretty good for being a rookie.
07:45 And I mean, look, he's not CJ Stroud.
07:47 I would actually, now that I've seen enough from him--
07:55 there's a lot of people that are not going to agree with this,
07:58 and I don't care.
07:59 I would rather play him than Flacco.
08:02 Yeah, I would.
08:03 Joe Flacco has proven everything that you could possibly
08:07 prove about what it takes to be a legitimate NFL quarterback.
08:11 That's not a knock on Joe.
08:15 I would think at 38 years old, he certainly
08:19 has some things he can lean on.
08:22 But it's hard to replicate the lack of damage done
08:31 to a body that's 16 or 17 years younger than yours
08:36 and a willingness to just go out and play
08:39 with reckless abandon.
08:40 It almost feels like when Dorian drops back
08:42 and when he's out there, he's just so naive to everything.
08:47 Like not in a bad way, but just doesn't
08:49 know what he doesn't know.
08:51 And there's a freedom to that, where it's like, hey,
08:53 I'm just going to go back there and throw it
08:55 and drop back and try to make a play and be athletic
08:58 and just kind of figure it out.
09:00 What I would say to that-- and there's arguments
09:02 that be had in both directions.
09:04 Keep developing Dorian.
09:06 Keep letting him figure out what he is and keep letting him grow.
09:09 But then this team, man, it's like, how long can you wait?
09:14 Like with Flacco, you know what you're going to get.
09:17 You know-- maybe.
09:18 I guess I don't know.
09:19 He hadn't played in a year.
09:21 But this team was at least ready to win
09:24 before all these injuries.
09:26 How much longer can you go?
09:28 And obviously, Dorian's concussion
09:29 is going to kind of hinder that.
09:31 But it's a debate that's going to be had this week
09:33 and for the weeks to come.
09:35 But all in all, you love what you see out of 17, man.
09:38 The kid's gritty.
09:40 He grinds.
09:41 He's gutsy.
09:42 And you just appreciate those factors
09:45 as he continues to polish out his game.
09:47 I think the other guy that really jumped out to me today,
09:52 probably--
09:54 this probably isn't going super deep.
09:56 It's not like anybody else didn't notice this.
09:59 Jeremiah Usocoromo is playing some incredible football.
10:04 And his-- I almost want to say emergence,
10:09 because I don't know that I really saw this from him
10:13 before the last month or so.
10:17 I suddenly feel like maybe the Browns
10:20 have a pretty darn good linebacker room right now.
10:23 Because they've always been kind of like that one really mean,
10:27 nasty, tough linebacker away from being a scary room.
10:33 And I feel like JOK might be filling the void there.
10:39 He's special.
10:40 And just his rare combination of athleticism and toughness
10:45 is awesome to watch.
10:46 And remember when we went and drafted him,
10:49 Greg got him in the second round.
10:50 I thought he could have been a first round guy.
10:52 You take Greg Newsome in the first round,
10:54 and then you get him early in the second.
10:56 And he was drafted to be the Lamar Jackson stopper.
11:00 That's what he was supposed to come in and do.
11:03 And you're starting to see why.
11:04 He can run with everybody.
11:06 He could be the fastest guy in the field.
11:08 And he gets from point A to point B
11:10 like that in the blink of an eye.
11:12 And he comes with bad intentions, man.
11:14 You don't want to cross him because he'll
11:16 run right through you.
11:17 He's so fun to watch.
11:18 And really, with Anthony Walker being out,
11:21 the pairing of JOK and Sione Takitaki
11:26 is really interesting.
11:27 Because Takitaki is more of that thick, bruiser kind of a guy.
11:30 And they kind of pair really well together.
11:32 They both can get to the ball.
11:34 And they're doing a good job.
11:35 I love that linebacker room.
11:36 And JOK today was out of this world special.
11:40 Yeah, yeah, he was really, really good.
11:42 Double-digit tackles, finished the day with 12 total,
11:46 seven solo tackles.
11:48 Obviously, had one sack, a hurry, two tackles for a loss,
11:52 and a forced fumble.
11:53 How about that play he made?
11:55 It was third and one, right?
11:56 I forget the situation.
11:58 And Jerry Judy just caught that screen pattern,
12:01 that little now screen, got like 8 and 1/2 yards,
12:04 didn't get the first down.
12:05 And it was like, it was right after halftime, right?
12:07 And he needed a stop.
12:08 And boom, they try to do that pitch to the right.
12:11 And there's six right there, JOK making a play.
12:13 All over it.
12:14 Yeah, he was great for sure.
12:17 All right, the other big topic that I think we should address
12:19 postgame here, I want your opinion.
12:22 There are a lot of people that are not
12:28 seeing eye to eye with Kevin Stefanski's decision
12:30 to run the ball as few times today as he did.
12:35 Let's see, the Browns finished the day
12:37 with 107 yards on the ground.
12:41 They ran it 24 times.
12:44 And obviously, they were a little bit more
12:46 willing to air it out a bit with DTR throwing 29 times.
12:50 PJ Walker threw it 13 times.
12:52 So 42 passing attempts, substantially more
12:57 than the run game.
12:58 I don't know that I agree with everybody
13:00 that's hounding Kevin.
13:04 I actually really like the creativity
13:07 in some of the formations today.
13:08 I didn't have a problem with it.
13:13 And for everybody, it's like, God, Denver's got the worst
13:15 rush defense in the NFL.
13:16 Run the ball.
13:17 It's not quite that straightforward.
13:21 And by the way, they gave up 350 of those rushing yards
13:25 in one game against Miami.
13:28 So take out one outlier, and maybe we're not
13:32 talking about a team that's been torched on the ground.
13:34 They gave up 70 points in one game.
13:36 It's look at a better sample size of the day.
13:40 And I would also add the issue to that, too,
13:43 is we sit at home and listen to the broadcast,
13:45 and all Sanchez kept saying was run the ball, run the ball,
13:47 run the ball.
13:48 Well, guess what?
13:49 You're not going to-- you can't just get into an I formation
13:51 and run it right down your throat.
13:53 How you can open stuff up in the run game
13:56 is having a successful pass game.
13:58 And guess what?
13:59 What is Denver thinking?
14:00 Hey, Cleveland has a rookie quarterback, a fifth rounder,
14:03 who's played two starts.
14:04 They're going to try to stuff it down our throat.
14:06 And Stefanski said it after the game.
14:08 He's like, hey, a lot of it's formational based,
14:10 and a lot of it is personnel based.
14:11 When they sub in a certain amount of guys,
14:13 we know we have an advantage in the pass game.
14:15 Well, you're not just going to roll DTR out there
14:18 and run it on first down, run it on second down,
14:20 and give them third and eight or third and seven.
14:22 So with that said, I think that they were getting to it.
14:26 You're down 14 to 12 in the third quarter.
14:29 You had a great mix.
14:31 If Dorian Thompson Robinson finished the day
14:33 29 pass attempts, I think that's a little high.
14:36 And if you were to ask Kevin yesterday, hey,
14:39 I'd like him to be somewhere between 22 to 27-ish.
14:43 That's kind of where the sweet spot would have been.
14:46 But I thought they were doing a nice job balancing
14:49 with Jerome Ford and Kareem Hunt.
14:51 Yes, I think they should have ran it more.
14:54 I don't think it should have been 30 rushing--
14:56 or three rushes to one pass or even two to one.
14:59 I thought it was a really good mix and a healthy mix.
15:02 And it was working.
15:03 Let's tell the truth.
15:04 It was working.
15:05 And so if you're Denver and you self-scout, you're like, look,
15:07 we haven't been very good against the run this year.
15:10 And Cleveland's got a banged up offensive line
15:13 with a rookie quarterback making his first NFL
15:15 start on the road.
15:16 And by the way, they've been one of the best rushing teams
15:19 in the NFL this year.
15:20 What do you think they're going to do?
15:21 We think they're going to run the ball.
15:23 So they stack the box.
15:24 They put themselves in positions to stop the run.
15:26 Well, I mean, it's a numbers game, man.
15:30 You're only good at one thing if you have elite level talent
15:36 or you got more hats than blockers.
15:40 Exactly.
15:41 If you got more guys there to stop the run,
15:42 I don't have an issue with them throwing the ball.
15:44 I thought DTR made a bunch of good throws today.
15:46 It's not Dorian's fault that the Browns
15:49 had five more drops and a few others
15:51 that I thought should have been caught.
15:53 And guess what, too.
15:54 When he left the game, the situation, 17 to 12,
15:58 yes, they were backed up.
15:59 They would have ended up punting away had he not gotten hurt.
16:02 But you're still in it, right?
16:03 The final score is 29 to 12.
16:05 And Denver goes on a 12-0 run to kind of end it.
16:08 But it was working.
16:10 The game plan was working.
16:12 I'm getting texts from all sorts of people,
16:14 like fire Kevin, fire this, fire that.
16:15 I'm like, guys, what are you watching?
16:18 This game plan was working.
16:19 It was happening.
16:20 And you lose your quarterback, then you lose your receiver,
16:22 and then everything just fell apart.
16:25 Well, sure.
16:25 And then when you're chasing the game late,
16:27 you can't really run power.
16:30 So the discrepancy on the play-calling sheet
16:34 is going to get a little wider there.
16:35 So yeah, look, I'm not going to sit here and say,
16:40 that's the finest game Kevin's ever called.
16:43 It wasn't Seattle.
16:44 It wasn't Indianapolis.
16:45 And I know they ultimately lost in Seattle anyways.
16:48 It wasn't the Colts.
16:49 It wasn't what we saw him do against Baltimore or Pittsburgh
16:52 or Arizona or San Francisco.
16:56 But I thought it was a good game plan,
16:58 and I thought the Browns did what they largely could
17:02 control.
17:04 Maybe a little, like, two in his bag of tricks
17:08 on the ball that was fumbled on the reverse.
17:11 But even at that, I didn't look at that and be like,
17:14 that was stupid.
17:15 Why did they do that?
17:17 You got to find creative ways to get a defense's eyes moving
17:21 in different directions.
17:22 And I just didn't--
17:24 I didn't have a problem with that play.
17:26 Handle the football.
17:27 Don't go--
17:27 Oh, and Brennan, mind you, that was PJ Walker's first snap
17:32 in three weeks, coming off the bench cold.
17:35 Like, what are you going to do?
17:36 At that point, what are you going to do?
17:37 He's going to sit there and be like, all right,
17:38 I got backup left tackle and right tackle, no running back,
17:41 no receiver, and I got my backup quarterback.
17:44 I have to make something happen.
17:45 I'm going to give it a shot.
17:46 If it would have worked, great.
17:48 The real bummer of the situation is on first down
17:52 before DTR gets hurt.
17:53 He hits Ninjoku in the hands, and he
17:57 would have slipped out and had a massive gain on first down,
18:01 potentially one that blows the doors off.
18:03 Instead, he kind of bobbles it around, drops it.
18:05 Then on second down, you get nothing.
18:07 Third down, he gets hurt, and then the sky is falling.
18:09 It's just a frustrating day, again, from your pass catchers.
18:12 I also read something.
18:13 I don't know if I'm buying into this,
18:14 but somebody had circulated something on Twitter that said,
18:18 hey, Sean Payton was the head coach at Bounty Gate,
18:22 and there were a bunch of fairly high hits
18:26 on some of the Browns today.
18:27 Should we connect any of the dots?
18:29 Nah, I don't really think so.
18:32 Physical game, tough game.
18:35 I didn't think anybody was out there head hunting.
18:40 Ultimately, the Browns, in a lot of ways, were their own undoing.
18:43 You can't fumble five times.
18:45 Two for 13 on third downs is atrocious.
18:49 Only 270 yards of total offense.
18:52 Obviously, that's not quite where you want to be.
18:54 And defensively, I know the scoreboard
18:57 says 29 points and all, but I just
19:00 felt like there were some moments where the defense--
19:04 the Browns offense put the defense
19:07 in some pretty tough spots.
19:10 And look, you know this better than anybody.
19:13 You play the game at a pretty good level.
19:15 Playing good defense is about three things.
19:18 You've got to have good leverage.
19:20 You've got to play good--
19:23 you have to tackle well, and you limit explosive plays.
19:26 Those are the three basics of how do you defend well.
19:32 And I thought the Browns lost leverage today.
19:33 I thought they were reasonable but not great in tackling,
19:38 and they gave up some chunk plays
19:40 that they shouldn't have given up.
19:41 And I would add to that, I loved what the Broncos were
19:45 doing on the ground.
19:47 When you look at this Browns defense, you're like, OK,
19:49 this defensive line is game records in their elite,
19:52 and they rushed the passer with reckless abandonment
19:55 and total, total commitment to getting home.
19:58 And they used that aggression against them.
20:01 How many times did you see guys just flying up the field
20:03 and then having little trap plays inside
20:05 or getting the guard across and just not even huge hits,
20:08 just pushing them out the way, just using
20:10 their aggression against them?
20:11 I thought their run scheme was fantastic,
20:14 and I thought it was really well done.
20:17 Hats off to the Broncos.
20:18 They had a great plan, and they executed it very, very well,
20:21 especially on the ground.
20:23 So look, I don't love the questions
20:29 to Kevin Stefanski postgame that are looking forward
20:32 to next week already.
20:34 I understand that some of those get asked pretty--
20:38 I mean, the body's not even cold, man.
20:40 We're talking about the game ended a few minutes ago
20:43 and questions about, will Joe Flacco be ready next week?
20:47 Like, I don't know.
20:50 Let's give it a few days and figure it out.
20:52 The obvious answer there is he's got
20:55 to get ready because anybody that used their eyes to watch
21:00 the end of the game there--
21:01 and I mean this respectfully to PJ Walker--
21:04 I know he's been serviceable when the Browns played him
21:08 this year.
21:09 It's not good enough.
21:11 So they've got to get Flacco ready if DTR can't play.
21:16 And yes, he's got to figure out a way
21:18 to maybe use a quarterback that is a little different.
21:24 This is not a system that's built around Joe Flacco's
21:27 strengths.
21:29 But I just-- I don't know.
21:33 I get frustrated when we think too far forward,
21:35 even though that's what everybody wants to talk about.
21:39 It's almost like the soapbox of all of the midweek stuff,
21:48 the non-game related stuff becomes more story worthy
21:52 than the game itself.
21:53 The Browns are going to be fine.
21:59 That's it right there, Brennan.
22:01 We have this.
22:01 And I don't know if it's with other fan bases
22:03 or if it's just ours.
22:05 But there's this weird thing that happens.
22:07 When the Browns win, it is we're going to the Super Bowl.
22:09 We're the best team that's ever created, ever, all time.
22:13 Put us up against the 85 Bears.
22:14 We're going to score 40.
22:15 When they lose, it's like they would lose to the neighborhood
22:19 flag team.
22:20 It's like there's no in between.
22:22 And the truth is, they got beat today.
22:24 They looked bad from the start.
22:26 And they looked bad to the end.
22:27 They battled in there.
22:29 They were in there.
22:30 You were like, OK, we got a chance.
22:32 You got some more injuries.
22:33 But the real truth of the matter is you went on this trip
22:37 needing to split.
22:38 You needed to split between Denver and LA.
22:41 Yes, you would have loved both.
22:42 But what you needed to do was split.
22:44 So you still have the opportunity
22:46 to go to LA and take care of business against the Rams.
22:49 It's not going to be easy.
22:50 They rolled the Cardinals today.
22:53 But that's the goal.
22:54 And that goal is still attainable.
22:56 You got to gather the pieces, get the troops back together,
22:59 and be like, all right, here's the situation.
23:00 Now we got to go.
23:02 And I think they'll figure out a way to do it.
23:04 And hopefully, they can get as healthy as possible
23:06 along the way.
23:07 So Cleveland licking its wounds a bit
23:10 after a tough day in Denver.
23:12 We got plenty more coming for you this week.
23:14 Obviously, the team is on the road all week long.
23:17 You probably heard that 64 times during the broadcast today.
23:21 It's like-- I don't know why it's some big story
23:24 that the Browns aren't coming home.
23:26 Los Angeles, sometimes that happens.
23:29 What do you want?
23:31 Browns are-- big deal.
23:32 The Browns are-- oh, there we go.
23:34 Big deal.
23:35 The Browns are staying on the West Coast
23:37 instead of flying back twice in one week.
23:39 Yeah.
23:40 It's not the end of the world.
23:41 So hopefully, this team can get healthy
23:44 and go put a good performance together next week.
23:47 Fingers crossed.
23:48 In the meantime, we'll have plenty of coverage for you
23:50 all week long over on Browns Digest.
23:52 Hope you'll join us along the way at brownsdigest.com
23:55 and right here on this channel.
23:56 For Anthony Meglin, I'm Brendan Gulick.
23:58 Cleveland loses today for the second time
24:00 in their last seven games.
24:01 Final score, Denver 29, Cleveland 12.
