Health unions have reached a pay deal in principle with the government, which could potentially see the end of strikes by senior doctors

Health Secretary Victoria Atkins described it as a "really good reform" that will ensure the pay structure is "faster, simpler and fairer" for consultants. Report by Alibhaiz. Like us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/itn and follow us on Twitter at http://twitter.com/itn

00:00 This is a really good reform of a pay contract for consultants that has been around for some
00:06 twenty years. We're bringing that contract back up to what we expect in our day-to-day
00:13 lives nowadays and we're seeing reforms to the pay structure that will mean that it is
00:18 faster, simpler and fairer for consultants but also critically for patients. And so I
00:24 really hope that consultants feel able to accept this offer when it's put to the vote.
00:29 Everybody is concerned that since December last year 1.1 million appointments have been
00:35 rescheduled due to strike action. This is why it was essential that we got to a fair
00:40 and reasonable settlement with consultants which we have through this deal. There have
00:44 been weeks and weeks of work leading up to this point and I'm extremely grateful not
00:49 just to the unions but also to my predecessor Steve Barclay who helped with many of the
00:55 important steps along the way.
