La Salle honors champion teams, legends

The De La Salle UAAP men's basketball champion teams of 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2016 finally got their due recognition in a ring ceremony at the school's Henry Sy, Sr. Hall on Nov. 27, 2023. More than recognizing the contributions of the Green Archers champion teams and legends like Renren Ritualo, Don Allado, Mike Cortez, coach Franz Pumaren, as well as event main organizer and current San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora, the La Salle greats themselves hope that the ring ceremony would inspire the current Green Archers team to become champs too. La Salle faces the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons in the Season 86 Finals with Game 1 of the best-of-3 series set to start on November 29 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

00:00 Well, first of all, it's been 25 years since we won the UEFA Championship in 1998.
00:06 It was the first of four state championships.
00:09 And I was part of the two, '98 and '99.
00:12 In 1999, I was the team captain of the Back-to-Back Championship team.
00:16 So we celebrated our 25 years.
00:19 And a lot of teams won the National Championship since that time.
00:23 But not all teams were given rings.
00:25 So '98, '99, 2000, 2001, and 2016, the rings were not given.
00:31 In 2007 and 2013, they were given.
00:34 So of course, we were coaches, players from before.
00:39 We all feel that we also contributed a little to the University.
00:47 And I felt that someone had to take the initiative to make this happen.
00:53 So we formed an organizing committee composed of myself, Don Aljado, Ren Anesuelo, Bonose, and Dominic Uy.
01:02 And I took the initiative of talking to the alumni to make this happen.
01:07 There were two objectives, actually.
01:09 Number one is to give recognition to the players who have sacrificed and persevered to bring honor and glory to the University by way of winning championships.
01:20 And the second, which I think is very, very important, is that we hope through this ring ceremony,
01:25 we can inspire the current basketball team to push themselves very hard to win the championship.
01:33 We want to be an aspirational to them.
01:35 To tell them to themselves, "I also want to be a champion. I want to have a ring. I want to have a ring ceremony."
01:41 And I honestly think that the chance of Lazal now is big.
01:44 We're peaking at the right time.
01:46 Yes, in the start, we were losing games that we should have won.
01:50 We were collapsing in the endgame.
01:52 But that's really part of learning.
01:54 Part of growing up and maturing is having to lose tight games.
01:58 Then you realize how to adjust, how to correct your errors.
02:03 So, of course, I think that Lazal has a big chance of winning.
02:07 We are in a nine-game winning streak.
02:09 We have a good momentum.
02:10 And hopefully, this ceremony will push the team even harder for us to win the championship this year.
02:15 That's one of the purpose of this ring ceremony.
02:20 It's to give a boost for the current team.
02:25 Because, of course, the momentum is different.
02:29 Nine straight wins.
02:31 I hope it continues.
02:32 What can you say to the current team?
02:35 They're really strong.
02:36 They look really great inside the floor.
02:39 They love each other.
02:40 They're playing together.
02:42 They look having fun inside the floor.
02:44 So, I'd say that's it.
02:46 Inside the floor.
