UW defensive coordinator William Inge discusses Carson Bruener's recent play.

00:00 - I've seen a couple of huge games from Carson Bruner here
00:02 where he's had to step into that role.
00:04 But obviously he'd been a contributor prior to that,
00:07 but maybe not a starter.
00:09 Had he done something to improve to get to that point,
00:13 you know, compared to earlier in the season?
00:15 And has he done enough now to earn more run?
00:18 - Yeah, it's just one of those things where,
00:20 as you get through the fall
00:21 and as you get through the season,
00:23 you always want to make sure you're peaking
00:25 at the right times.
00:26 And that's exactly what he's doing, you know,
00:28 with the injury that happened to Alphonso Tupatala.
00:31 He was able to come in and we knew we didn't blink.
00:34 Just as I told the guys,
00:36 we have a philosophy in our room is we kind of,
00:37 we know who it ain't going to be on our end when it comes.
00:40 And when you get in, if you prepare like you're supposed to,
00:43 you're going to have a chance to make your plays
00:45 at the point of attack.
00:46 And the last couple of weeks, he's been very good.
00:49 Being able to do that while staying within
00:52 the constraints of our defense,
00:53 while being able to drive the defense,
00:54 while making sure everyone is called the line
00:56 and then adjusted.
00:57 And at the point of attack, he's making his plays.
00:59 So he's just doing a lot of the things
01:02 that we've just seen in practice,
01:04 but just weeks on top of weeks on top of weeks.
01:07 - Is it still hard to shake up the pecking order though,
01:09 where you're at now with rotations and situational deals,
01:12 rather than just elevate him to the immediate starter?
01:15 - No, no, because I think we have a lot of trust in our room
01:18 and they know and understand that the best guys play
01:21 and those guys who are playing well,
01:22 making those plays are going to be in
01:24 when it counts the most.
01:26 So, and we have a trust within the room
01:29 and within our defense and within our team.
01:30 And a lot of that just really comes from the mission
01:33 that Coach DeBoer puts us all on.
01:35 - Coach, you guys sub a lot at the linebacker spot.
01:38 I think you played five or six guys in the game on Saturday.
01:41 Is it getting to a point in time of the year
01:43 where maybe it's time to give Carson Bruner even more snaps
01:47 and kind of maybe limit the sub package a little bit there?
01:49 - No, because all those guys play.
01:51 So when you look at how the substitutions came out
01:54 from the game, Carson played the most
01:56 of all the guys in the group.
01:58 So some of those things are just happening naturally.
02:02 The biggest thing that we want to make sure
02:03 as we tell our guys, you want to make sure you can be fresh,
02:07 you can be fast and you can play to your rev limiter.
02:11 And if you can do those on any given down,
02:14 we're going to be just fine.
02:15 And this is where you want to be
02:16 during this time of the year.
