00:00 Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're counting down our picks for the Top 20 Greatest Mecha
00:09 Battles in Anime.
00:15 Number 20 – XM2 Rainleaf vs. Pale Rider (1986)
00:27 After her knight, Kiria, was assimilated into an AI army and turned into a Legion Shepard,
00:32 Frederica asks Shin to help free him if he ever encounters him.
00:37 The leader of the Spearhead Squadron finally got the chance to fulfill that request when
00:42 he confronted Kiria, who goes by the codename "Pale Rider" on the battlefield.
00:47 Despite having a huge size advantage over Shin's Rainleaf, the lad also known as "The
00:53 Undertaker" is easily able to go toe-to-toe with the powerful machine.
01:02 The battle finally comes to its conclusion when Frederica distracts Kiria, allowing Shin
01:07 to get close to his core and blasting it to oblivion.
01:14 Number 19 – AV-98 Ingram vs. Type-0 (Patlabor the Movie)
01:20 In the finale to this 80s classic, the Type-0 Labor has lost control due to a virus and
01:26 unfortunately for Noah, Kanuka is trapped inside of it.
01:34 Unsure as to how to save her, Noah is cornered thanks to Type-0's superior hand-to-hand
01:40 combat.
01:45 As the two are knocked off their side and hanging for dear life, Noah decides to go
01:49 up close and personal, equipping themselves with a shotgun and leaving behind the damaged
01:54 Ingram.
01:55 She fires down at the Type-0's SRAM system, shutting it down in the process.
02:04 Number 18 – YF-21 vs. X-9 Ghost (Macross Plus Movie Edition)
02:16 After taking over Macross City, Sharon Apple sends the unnamed drone, known as the X-9
02:21 Ghost, to attack both Isamu and Gould.
02:24 Piloting the YF-21, Gould buys Isamu enough time to go after Sharon by taking on the X-9
02:32 all by himself.
02:37 What follows is an absolutely dazzling display of missile spam, showcasing one of the best
02:42 examples of the Eterno Circus animation technique.
02:45 In order to take down the X-9 Ghost, Gould removes his limiters, allowing him to reach
02:51 an insane speed that unfortunately leads to his death.
02:54 What a way to go out.
02:59 Number 17 – Gao Fygar vs. Gao Gaigar (The King of Braves – Gao Gaigar Final)
03:07 Following the death of Papillon, who was killed by a replicant Mamoru while stealing the Q-Pods,
03:12 Gai chases after him, which results in a battle between Gai's Gao Fygar and a copied
03:18 version of the legendary Gao Gaigar.
03:24 The two pilots pull no punches and have a dramatic hot-blooded showdown in the rain.
03:35 Although both sides appear evenly matched throughout this battle, Gai overwhelms Mamoru
03:39 through sheer will, ripping right through the fake Gao Gaigar and creating an explosion
03:45 the size of a nuke.
03:50 Number 16 – Gunbuster vs. Space Monsters (Gunbuster)
03:55 With a never-ending number of space monsters converging into the solar system, it's up
04:00 to both Noriko and Kazumi to fend off this imposing threat.
04:14 Unfortunately for the two, every time they leave Earth, many years pass due to time dilation
04:19 – something that pains Kazumi greatly, as she'll never see the one she loves again.
04:24 Fortunately, Noriko manages to snap Kazumi out of it, and the two combine their ships
04:29 to form Gunbuster.
04:37 Although it's not the first or last time the Gunbuster launches to battle it out against
04:41 space monsters, this scene stuck with us all these years later for its incredible battle
04:47 sequences.
04:52 Number 15 – Burning Gundam vs. Master Gundam (Mobile Fighter G Gundam)
04:58 Although this battle isn't the last one in the series, pretty much everything had
05:02 been building up to this epic teacher vs. student showdown.
05:06 With the undefeated of the East trying to revive the Dark Gundam and end humanity, it's
05:11 up to his pupil Domon to put an end to his plans in the Gundam Fight Final.
05:20 This decisive battle is so over-the-top that it wouldn't look out of place in your regular
05:25 shounen anime, yet G Gundam manages to knock it out of the park with its dramatic action
05:31 and passionate attacks.
05:40 The clash finally comes to an end when Domon busts out the good ol' reliable Burning
05:45 Finger, allowing Master Asia to finally taste defeat.
05:54 Number 14 – Shin Getter Robo vs. Metal Beast Dragon (Getter Robo Armageddon)
06:01 After getting inside the Shin Dragon, the Getter Team led by Ryoma find themselves confronted
06:06 by the Metal Beast Dragon, led by the rogue Dr. Satome, who has gone mad after getting
06:12 infected by the alien invaders.
06:20 To gain the upper hand, Satome mind-breaks our heroes and shows illusions of the deaths
06:26 of Michiru and Musashi.
06:31 But it's not enough to break their wills, as they power through and unleash their most
06:36 powerful attack, the Stoner Sunshine.
06:47 Not only is it one of the most badass techniques in all of anime, but it wipes out Satome for
06:52 good.
06:53 Number 13 – New Gundam vs. Sazabi (Mobile Suit Gundam – Char's Counterattack)
07:00 Since the conclusion of the original series, fans had been wanting to see Amuro and Char
07:04 duke it out one last time, and franchise creator Yoshiyuki Tomino was happy to oblige them
07:11 in the 1988 film, Char's Counterattack.
07:21 After a sudden heel turn, Char returns to Zeon and becomes its leader, with the goal
07:26 of dropping a meteor onto Earth, forcing its inhabitants to leave for the space colonies.
07:32 Knowing the amount of lives this would cost, Amuro once again opposes him in his brand
07:37 new New Gundam.
07:39 With Char representing his iconic red colours in the Sazabi.
07:46 Although the battle at first seems to be even, Amuro overpowers Char, forcing him to eject
07:52 his cockpit from the Sazabi and leaving him in the hands of his greatest adversary.
08:00 Number 12 – Mechamaru vs. Mahito (Jujutsu Kaisen)
08:05 This is quite possibly the most unconventional battle on this list, as it features a gigantic
08:11 mecha taking on a special grade cursed spirit the size of a human.
08:23 Now you'd think Mahito would be no match for Mechamaru's Mode Absolute, as it absolutely
08:28 towers over him.
08:30 That is, however, anything but the case.
08:38 The battle between the two harkens back to some of the most incredible instances from
08:42 both Neon Genesis Evangelion and Gurren Lagann.
08:46 And although Mechamaru was unable to take down Mahito, he for sure made every mecha
08:51 fanatic out there proud.
08:57 Number 11 – Eva Unit-01 vs. Zeruel (Evangelion 2.0)
09:03 You cannot advance.
09:05 When Rei is consumed by the angel Zeruel, Shinji puts his fears aside and bravely rushes
09:10 out to rescue her with the Eva Unit-01.
09:14 Despite a valiant effort and almost seemingly defeating the angel, his Eva unfortunately
09:19 runs out of power.
09:22 With nothing left to lose, Shinji refuses to give up, with his rage powering up his
09:27 Eva into a berserk mode.
09:33 Transcending all limits, the Eva Unit-01 absolutely devastates Zeruel, allowing Shinji to not
09:39 only reach Rei, but unfortunately, trigger third impact.
09:48 Number 10 – Gundam Barbatos vs. The Hashimal (Mobile Suit Gundam)
09:51 Mobile Suit Gundam Iron-Blooded Orphans.
09:54 Unmanned and practically undefeatable, the Hashimal was made purely for slaughtering
09:59 humans, and without a pesky pilot at the controls, it was able to do its job quite well.
10:09 Unfortunately, there's not a mobile armour alive capable of besting the likes of Mikazuki.
10:19 Despite nearly killing himself in the process, Mika was able to use the raw brutality of
10:23 the Barbatos to beat the mechanical monster into submission.
10:30 It's a brutal slugfest that truly encompasses just how much of a living weapon Mika and
10:38 his Gundam truly are.
10:48 Number 9 – Lancelot Albion vs. Galahad (Code Geass Lelouch of the Rebellion R2)
10:54 Out to make a battle between two knights a hundred times more epic?
10:58 Simply add giant robots and superpowers, of course.
11:08 Following Lelouch's ascension to the throne of Britannia, the former leader of the Knights
11:12 of the Round seeks to eliminate him.
11:15 Unluckily for him, Lelouch's on-again, off-again best buddy, Suzaku, and his newly kitted-out
11:20 Nightmare are sent out to end the old regime once and for all.
11:34 Bismarck may be able to see into the future, but unfortunately that doesn't count for
11:39 much when faced with something like Britannia's winged white knight.
11:49 Number 8 – Strike Gundam vs. Aegis Gundam (Mobile Suit Gundam SEED)
11:54 Kira!
11:55 Athrun!
11:56 Oh, sorry, we were just caught up in all the screaming.
11:59 Man, these two like to yell a lot.
12:07 Overcome with grief at how both have killed their respective friends, these two coordinators
12:12 pretty much lose their heads and push their mobile suits to their limits, helmed by nothing
12:17 but the desire to kill each other.
12:23 With nothing left to lose, Athrun takes the totally underhanded route of blowing up the
12:28 remainder of his Gundam to win the day.
12:31 Still SEED at its best, though.
12:38 Number 7 – Gundam Alyx vs. Zaku (Mobile Suit Gundam 0080 – War in the Pocket)
12:44 Can't we all just get along?
12:54 Set during the One Year War, this exchange between two pilots isn't so much a grand
12:59 showdown but a pure demonstration of how conflict leads to meaningless casualties.
13:05 Made all the more potent here as both pilots, Christina and Bernie, had feelings for one
13:10 another.
13:16 Unaware of each other's identities as they both fight to the death, the image of the
13:20 two mobile suits impaling each other, all the while Al tries to cease the conflict,
13:25 is the perfect picture of the original ideology behind the Gundam name.
13:36 Number 6 – Big-O vs. Big Duo (The Big O)
13:41 Well, they aren't lying about being big, and you will indeed be crying out "Oh!"
13:46 after you see this battle erupt.
13:55 In a true clash of titans, the always well-dressed negotiator Roger Smith takes on the psychotic
14:01 Schwarzwald as their respective mecha quite literally smash everything around them.
14:07 While Big Duo may possess the power of flight and is armed to the teeth with missiles, it
14:12 can't stand up to the combined strength of Big-O's sudden impact and signature Stephen
14:17 Bloom performance.
14:28 Schwarzwald may not be guilty in the name of God, but he's certainly guilty of getting
14:33 his ass kicked.
14:41 Number 5 – Gundam 00 Riser vs. Reborn's Gundam (Mobile Suit Gundam 00)
14:48 A battle so big, two Gundams was not enough.
14:55 Egotistical does not even begin to describe the character of Ribbon's Almach.
15:00 A true snake with a god complex the size of a Gundam, his final battle against the likes
15:05 of Setsuna was immensely satisfying not only for the rapid pace of their strikes, but also
15:11 just seeing his slimy face get kicked in.
15:23 After all, no amount of gloriously evil speeches or custom-made Gundams were going to save
15:28 him from Setsuna's innovator abilities.
15:36 Number 4 – EVA Unit 02 vs. Mass-Produced EVAs – The End of Evangelion
15:42 Hats off to you, Asuka.
15:43 You really had them on the ropes for a while.
15:56 After Shinji's dad steps on too many toes, the NERV facility comes under attack courtesy
16:02 of unmanned EVA units.
16:04 The only thing standing between them is a pissed-off Asuka and her own EVA unit.
16:09 The landscape literally shakes as she manages to bumble her way through a whole horde of
16:14 them, using whatever she can to win.
16:20 However, not even she can hold out forever, leading to a very gruesome end for her.
16:37 Number 3 – RX-78-2 Gundam vs. Zeong – Mobile Suit Gundam
16:43 A rivalry as legendary as the franchise, with the One Year War seemingly reaching its climax,
16:54 it's up to the Red Comet to defend Zeong's last line of defense from Amuro's Gundam
16:59 with the powerful but unfinished Zeong.
17:02 An unconventional but dramatic battle, the two pilots use every technique in the book
17:07 to put the other out of commission.
17:19 And it all ends with quite possibly the most iconic scene in Gundam history.
17:27 Number 2 – Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann vs. Gran Zeboma – Gurren Lagann
17:33 From the gritty to the absolutely ridiculous, in order to protect the cosmos from the living
17:39 extinction event that is the Anti-Spiral, all members of Team Daigurren unite for a
17:44 final battle.
17:51 With their unbreakable spirit combined with all of the gunmen, they end up creating a
17:56 mecha that's many times bigger than whole galaxies.
18:04 No, seriously, they literally use them as weapons.
18:09 Of course, it doesn't stop there, as Zeman and the others best evil incarnate once and
18:14 for all with, what else, a drill.
18:38 If you're on your phone, make sure to go into your settings and switch on notifications.
18:43 Number 1 – EZ-8 Gundam vs. GOOF Custom – Mobile Suit Gundam, the 8th MS Team
18:49 Placed in an impossible situation, rookie commander Shiro finds himself in charge of
18:54 a ragtag group of Earth Federation soldiers, only to find themselves confronted and quickly
19:00 wiped out by Zeon's ace pilot, Norris Packard.
19:09 What follows can only be described as one of the most hard-hitting and strategic battles
19:14 in Gundam history.
19:22 In the end, knowing victory was not an option, Norris allows Shiro to strike him down in
19:27 order to destroy the last gun tank.
19:30 Mecha fans, you need to watch this.
