00:00 When they went to take the dress off,
00:01 they had pinned through my skin.
00:04 Didn't hurt, I literally felt nothing.
00:05 There was no blood, nothing.
00:06 But they were like, "What is it caught on?"
00:08 It was my (beep) skin.
00:10 Hi Harper's Bazaar, this is Dove Cameron,
00:12 and this is Fashion Flashback.
00:15 Today we will be looking back
00:16 at some of my fashion moments,
00:18 both beloved and less loved.
00:20 (laughs)
00:22 This is from December 2013.
00:25 Oh my God.
00:27 So what I remember from this is picking it out myself.
00:31 I think these are Citizen's jeans.
00:33 Skinny jeans, very big at the time.
00:35 And then I think this is a Wild Fox shirt,
00:37 also very big at the time.
00:38 And I remember matching my hair bow to my shoe bow.
00:43 This like heavy side part swoop over thing happening.
00:48 Really good.
00:49 The super, super over plucked eyebrows, really good.
00:53 The glitter eye shadow.
00:55 Also very strong choice.
00:58 I've always been a fashion girl,
01:00 clearly not evident in this photo.
01:02 Whether or not it showed up on carpets for a while,
01:05 you know, debatable.
01:06 We're just gonna swiftly move on from that.
01:09 This next look, I did have a stylist for this.
01:12 I feel like you can sort of start to see the evolution
01:16 of the sort of like more romantic, whimsical,
01:18 gothic way that my style ended up going.
01:21 I definitely remember loving this like
01:24 Tim Burton-esque high neckline, lacy top.
01:29 I definitely wouldn't pair it with this skirt now,
01:32 or wear my hair down, or make many of these choices
01:35 that I seemed to think were a good idea on this carpet.
01:38 But I remember at the time thinking like,
01:39 wow, this is a defining look.
01:43 Also this pose, I have to love her.
01:45 She said, "Look at the nails, look at the rings,
01:47 "look at the bag."
01:48 Not a high point for me in fashion.
01:52 So this, I think, is when you can start to see
01:55 my style becoming more so what it is now.
02:00 This sort of like dramatic, platinum, slicked hair,
02:04 and this very gothic cupid doll lip,
02:06 and the strappy, barely there,
02:09 interesting design of this dress.
02:11 I just remember thinking this was very daring at the time,
02:14 like being on the Disney Channel and wearing something
02:16 that felt very sexy.
02:17 Very sexy and very adult.
02:18 I was very excited to be wearing Beaumont.
02:20 Olivier, my husband.
02:22 Love of my life.
02:24 This look came together super last minute
02:28 for my very first VMAs.
02:29 It was before I had attended as a nominee,
02:33 and I was just there because I really wanted to go.
02:35 I love this look.
02:37 I know it's really simple, and especially for the VMAs,
02:39 it maybe feels a little underdressed.
02:41 There's something about it that is so nearly industrial,
02:45 and very kind of Dune-esque.
02:48 There's something about it that is so muted,
02:51 so monochromatic.
02:53 The industrial tie around the waist,
02:55 obviously I love, like an arm piece.
02:57 I love anything that feels a little bit like armor,
02:59 while also this feels very vulnerable,
03:01 like the suede skirt,
03:02 and the fact that it's just a little strapless situation.
03:05 The two materials being so different,
03:07 and the colors being just slightly off.
03:09 I don't know, I love it.
03:10 It like hits the right place in my heart.
03:12 I either like to go all, all, all out,
03:15 or wear something so pared down
03:17 that it feels bleak, like nearly emotionally bleak.
03:21 The tattoo on the foot was a decision I made
03:24 when I realized how closely tied in snakes were
03:28 with historical shame for women,
03:31 but I decided to reclaim the snake,
03:32 and make it feel powerful and sexy again.
03:35 This one was my first time attending the Gucci LACMA event,
03:40 and this was a vintage Gucci dress
03:42 that my stylist at the time found for me.
03:45 And again, there's a big snake on my chest.
03:47 I was really excited about this.
03:49 It was my first time sort of stepping away
03:50 from my previous identity,
03:52 with the strong lashes, and the strong cat eye,
03:54 and the long blonde hair,
03:56 and the sexier thing I was doing.
03:58 And even though this may not seem like it,
04:00 this was like a big night for me
04:01 in terms of being like,
04:02 "Oh, I can do this differently and survive."
04:04 The CFDAs.
04:07 This was a huge night for me.
04:10 I was wearing this gorgeous Carolina Herrera gown.
04:13 This is just one of my favorite dresses I've ever worn.
04:16 It felt so classic, and interesting, and sculptural,
04:20 and I love this very like, campy, big bow.
04:24 I went with Wes Gordon,
04:25 the creative director for Carolina Herrera,
04:27 my other husband, Olivier and Wes.
04:29 My amazing makeup artist did this very dramatic eye.
04:32 We just decided to go full-blown,
04:33 femme, gothic, whimsical fantasy look.
04:37 And it was my first time debuting this hair
04:39 that ended up really being like,
04:40 a big part of my identity shift.
04:42 I'd like never felt more like myself.
04:44 This was like a sort of a visual indication
04:47 of a page turn, that I was so happy.
04:50 This was one of the more special nights in my whole life.
04:54 The 2022 Met Gala.
04:56 I went with Iris Van Herpen.
04:58 I mean, if you could pick one person
05:00 to go as your first ever Met date,
05:02 I'm still like, at a loss for words thinking about it.
05:07 Because not only is she a visionary and a genius,
05:10 she's so magical.
05:12 Also to be like, nearly naked on the steps of the Met.
05:15 Was something I'll never get over.
05:18 I was like, guess I'm gonna be naked.
05:21 Well actually, so this is a funny story
05:23 that I've never told, but they tried to make it
05:25 to my measurements before it got to New York,
05:27 but of course they had to alter it.
05:28 The whole dress is being held together
05:30 by like the finest mesh in the world.
05:32 Like we're talking like spider web thin.
05:34 All of these pieces are metal backed.
05:36 They have fabric on top,
05:37 which is what makes the arm pieces stand out
05:39 and what makes everything hold in place.
05:40 But literally one snag and the dress would be ruined.
05:43 So when they were pinning it on me to alter it,
05:45 we were pinning and I was holding a pose like this
05:48 for over two hours, like just like this.
05:51 It was so delicate that any time anybody breathed,
05:54 me or the tailor or anybody pinning,
05:56 it was like a threat to the dress.
05:57 So we were all like.
05:58 But when they went to take the dress off,
06:03 they had pinned through my skin.
06:06 Didn't hurt, I literally felt nothing.
06:07 There was no blood, nothing.
06:08 But like, they were like, what is it caught on?
06:10 It was my skin.
06:12 And they were like, I'm so sorry.
06:13 And I was like, I didn't feel anything.
06:15 Is the dress okay?
06:16 Get the dress off.
06:17 Okay, that's fashion I guess.
06:19 We were all like, it was kind of metal actually.
06:22 This was at the AMAs and this is when I performed
06:25 my first ever like live lounge version of Boyfriend.
06:28 Within the Boyfriend era,
06:30 like everything that we wanted to do was suiting.
06:32 But at a certain point,
06:33 it was like how many times can you wear a suit?
06:35 So we were trying to come up with all these little ways,
06:36 like mega flare pants,
06:38 sleeves that felt like they were like dripping blood.
06:41 This little bra that goes with it
06:42 and the heavy shoulder pads.
06:44 Like this was the costume for like a year.
06:46 Super comfortable.
06:47 Sometimes wish I could go back.
06:49 [laughs]
06:50 This was the 2023 VMAs.
06:53 We won the Music Video for Good Award.
06:55 This was my very first ever custom look
06:57 that I co-designed with a fashion house, which was Coach.
07:01 We designed this incredible dress from scratch.
07:04 This like barely there dress.
07:05 And I was like, it's gonna just blow away in the wind.
07:08 And again, I'm gonna be naked, but who cares?
07:09 I love this beautiful 90s square cut backless,
07:14 very sexy mermaid-y silhouetted dress.
07:16 There's all these beautiful details too,
07:18 like at the hem of the dress with the train,
07:20 you can see there's like all this kind of gothic lace
07:22 at the bottom and there's like patches of lace
07:25 along the hip bone and thigh.
07:27 - What did you want people to immediately take away
07:29 from this look when they saw it?
07:30 - Looks fucking great.
07:31 [laughs]
07:33 So the CFDAs.
07:35 It's really such an honor to be working with Coach.
07:37 I really love this dress.
07:39 This look is really classic, very me.
07:42 It feels like they really gave me a look
07:43 that is like the perfect blend of the house
07:46 and their aesthetic and sort of my aesthetic.
07:48 Effortless, pared back, classic, but fresh, sexy.
07:53 It was one of my favorites on the runway at the show
07:56 and I was really excited to wear it.
07:58 And then the look that we went for with hair and makeup
08:01 was just sort of like sticking with siren eyes,
08:04 hair pulled back to really show off
08:06 the beautiful tailoring on the chest.
08:10 All right you guys, thank you so much for coming with me
08:13 down memory lane for some of my favorite looks
08:15 and some of my less than favorite looks.
08:18 And my brand new album, Alchemical, is out now.
08:22 [upbeat music]
