00:00 Hey, Harper's Bazaar, it's me, Law Roach,
00:02 and today we'll be looking at some of my styling moments.
00:05 This is Fashion Flashback.
00:08 The first look is Celine Dion, 2017,
00:13 at the Billboard Awards wearing Stéphane Roland.
00:17 Affectionately and instantly,
00:19 it became known as the cloud dress.
00:22 That's because of the beautiful sleeves.
00:25 When we got Celine in a look for the dress,
00:28 I love to call it a goosebump moment
00:30 or a clutch your pearls moment.
00:32 And with Celine, when she puts something on that she loves,
00:34 she starts to sing, so she put the dress on
00:37 and it was shortly followed with a beautiful song.
00:41 I just remember walking her down this really narrow hallway
00:46 and all I can see is like women
00:49 with full faces of makeup and red lips.
00:52 It was almost like she was a football player
00:54 and she was like dodging the defense,
00:57 doing everything to get her to the stage
00:58 without any stains or any accidents happening to that dress.
01:03 She was performing "My Heart Will Go On"
01:06 at the Billboard Awards and literally,
01:09 there were grown men, including some rappers, sobbing.
01:13 That is one of my greatest memories of her and my work.
01:17 Yeah, I'm so proud to have been part of that look.
01:20 The next look is Ariana Grande
01:23 and custom John Bautista Valerie at the Grammys.
01:27 We wanted her to feel and look like a princess,
01:29 but we didn't wanna go traditional pink or pastel,
01:33 so we chose this really beautiful, muted gray.
01:38 John Bautista doesn't do a lot of custom gowns,
01:41 so I love to say that I kind of made that introduction.
01:44 I'm so blessed to have relationships
01:47 where I can kind of bypass a lot of the red tape
01:49 and go straight to the source.
01:51 And so I called him and was like,
01:52 "She's nominated for a few Grammys
01:56 "and it's a really big, special night for her."
01:58 And he said yes, and there goes the dress.
02:02 Okay, the next one is the gorgeous, the amazing
02:07 Enya Taylor-Joy at the premiere of "Emma."
02:11 This was a really beautiful era in my career,
02:13 working with Enya.
02:14 What makes this look so special
02:16 is that she's actually wearing something
02:18 from my personal archives.
02:20 She's wearing a Bob Mackie dress and neck piece.
02:24 He was inspired by the costumes from "My Fair Lady,"
02:28 and she has this really interesting beauty
02:31 and this etherealness, if that's a real word,
02:34 and I just thought that this gown with this girl
02:37 at that moment was absolutely perfect.
02:41 So next we have the beautiful Zendaya
02:44 at the "Spider-Man No Way Home" premiere
02:47 wearing Valentino Couture.
02:50 You know, we're really into method dressing.
02:52 I know everybody thinks it started with Barbie,
02:54 but we've kind of been doing it for a while now.
02:58 As you can see, it's clearly obviously spider webs,
03:00 and she had a mask on that was paying homage
03:03 to Spider-Man and his mask,
03:05 and she looks so mysterious in this picture.
03:08 She almost looks like a villain in a way,
03:09 which is so cool.
03:10 And then the lovely couple together,
03:13 and Tom is in custom Prada.
03:16 We had two really beautiful legacy houses behind us
03:21 supporting us for this night.
03:22 I had dressed men before,
03:23 but I don't know if I had ever dressed a guy
03:26 that had so much innate passion
03:28 and love for tailoring as Tom does.
03:32 So it was really interesting,
03:32 and it was just such a big night for them,
03:34 and it was such a big night for me
03:36 because I got to dress essentially Spider-Man and Mary Jane.
03:40 So how many styles can really say they done that?
03:43 I'm listening.
03:46 Oh, no one.
03:47 Okay.
03:48 The next one is the incredible, the gorgeous,
03:50 the stunning Miss Bella Hadid wearing Tom Ford Gucci.
03:55 This as well is from my personal archive.
03:59 So I got some goodies, you know?
04:01 I got some goodies.
04:02 I mean, just look at her in this Tom Ford.
04:04 She's the quintessential example
04:06 of what a Tom Ford girl looked like back then,
04:11 and for her to look so beautiful and so stunning
04:13 and so sophisticated and so sexy all at the same time,
04:17 which, in my opinion,
04:18 was one of the greatest fashion errors of all time,
04:22 Tom Ford's reign at Gucci.
04:24 She's a vintage girl, and I'm a vintage girl as well.
04:28 Now the next photo,
04:29 we are looking at the incomparable Kerry Washington
04:33 and Ellie Saab at the September 22 Emmys.
04:37 Kerry's a very petite, petite lady,
04:40 and it's a delicate balance
04:42 of not putting her in things that overwhelm her.
04:44 She can carry and she can wear clothes for sure,
04:47 but I think it was always my goal
04:49 to really show off her body.
04:52 What elevated it to me
04:53 is putting the woofer stockings with it.
04:56 You know, the jewelry is very simple and delicate,
04:59 so a delicate flower wearing delicate flowers.
05:03 It's just really a beautiful story.
05:06 And the next look is actually me for the CFDA.
05:10 I'm wearing custom Oscar de la Renta,
05:14 and I've won the first inaugural
05:16 and the only one to this date
05:18 that has won the Stylist Award presented by the CFDA,
05:21 and Kerry's wearing Vera Wang down there,
05:24 you know, helping me out,
05:25 making sure that my pictures come out great
05:27 and being a great friend and ally.
05:30 I just wanted to feel royal
05:33 and also pay a little bit of homage to Andre Leon Talley
05:38 and the silhouette that he was really known for.
05:41 He was my first representation of a black man in fashion,
05:46 and I thought since it was such a big night for me
05:49 that I would want to share that with him
05:50 in some type of way.
05:51 I'll always be grateful for Kerry
05:53 and her beautiful introduction and her kind words,
05:56 and that I've watched numerous times,
05:59 but when it gets to my part,
06:01 I kind of always shut it off.
06:02 So the next look is Lindsay Lohan.
06:06 She was wearing Valentino at the premiere
06:08 of "Falling for Christmas."
06:10 When she put this dress on,
06:11 it was like, okay, this is the one.
06:13 Again, one of those clutch your pearls, goosebump moments.
06:16 What I love about this Valentino dress
06:18 that it felt something from the late '60s, early '70s,
06:21 where these glamorous women would get dressed up
06:24 to go to a dinner party.
06:26 I knew that she would love that reference
06:29 and see the reference and see the vision,
06:31 and the hair was just pulled back.
06:33 The diamonds were very minimal,
06:35 and I was so blown away when I got the call
06:38 that she wanted to work with me,
06:39 and we talked about fashion for hours,
06:42 and she was just incredible to work with.
06:45 You know, Lindsay, if you happen to watch this,
06:46 I still want to go to the storage
06:48 and play with some of your vintage clothes,
06:49 so we got to make that happen.
06:51 This is Megan Thee Stallion.
06:54 This dress is Bachmai.
06:56 Megan had been away from social media.
06:59 She had been away from her fans.
07:02 She had been away from the world for a while,
07:04 and this was kind of her reintroduction to the world.
07:08 I was so blessed to be a part of this moment.
07:11 I always have to sneak stuff in on Meg,
07:13 like follow my gut and my instinct,
07:15 because again, I try to really know
07:17 what my clients will react to and what they'll love,
07:21 and also what'll look good on their body,
07:22 and this was a new Meg, new body,
07:25 and we tried this dress on in a fitting,
07:27 and she was like, "You showed me that sketch."
07:30 I was like, "I did," and I just went on and got it made,
07:33 'cause I felt something.
07:34 But yeah, this one was really special.
07:36 So the next one we have is Hunter Schaefer
07:40 at Vanity Fair wearing Anne d'Elemy's tierre.
07:43 This look shook the world, this body and the attitude,
07:48 and this took a lot of courage to wear this look
07:50 to Vanity Fair.
07:52 Hunter is a fashion girl.
07:56 She knows collections.
07:57 She knows the designers.
07:59 She knows, knows, so this one I was like,
08:01 "I'm gonna sneak it in," and I remember
08:03 she had to think about it, and she was like,
08:04 "But it's a lot."
08:05 I'm like, "It is a lot, but it's really good,"
08:07 and discussion kept going all night, all night, all night,
08:10 and then the affectionate name for this look is the titties,
08:14 [laughs]
08:15 and so when she called, and I'm like, "What's it gonna be?"
08:18 She's like, "I think I'm gonna wear the titties."
08:20 I think this, to me, has solidified itself
08:22 in fashion pop culture, and we'll see this look
08:25 for years and years and years to come.
08:28 One of my all-time favorite looks.
08:30 So the next one is Zendaya at the London premiere
08:34 of "Doom II," and Zendaya's wearing vintage Terry Mugler.
08:39 Anybody sees this look, they'll call it the robot
08:42 from now on.
08:43 I think this was the pinnacle of my career.
08:45 You know, everything's going down from here.
08:47 It took a long time and a lot of conversations,
08:51 and we built up the courage to contact
08:54 Casey Carwella at Mugler and ask him.
08:57 So we come in the room, and it's like his team
08:59 on this side, my team on this side, her,
09:01 and we look at each other, and we're like
09:03 taking deep breaths, and I pull out my phone,
09:05 and I just like, "We wanna wear this."
09:07 The first fitting was really magical.
09:09 They laid out all the pieces, and we started
09:12 with the shoes, the shoes fit, and then we started
09:14 with the shin, the shin fit, then the thigh fit,
09:16 and before you knew it, she had the entire suit on,
09:19 and I was literally, literally in tears.
09:22 I've been able to live out so many of my dreams
09:25 doing this job, and that one just took my breath away.
09:29 So the next look is Madame Celine Dion
09:32 wearing Valentino at the Grammys.
09:34 It's two women that have meant so much to me in my life,
09:37 Zendaya and Celine Dion, and I think Celine
09:40 really changed the trajectory of my career
09:43 when we started working together years ago.
09:45 I got the call from her team and said that she had
09:48 been invited to present the Album of the Year award
09:52 at the Grammys.
09:53 You know, Celine is asking if you would do it,
09:55 and I just was like, "I would do anything for Celine Dion."
09:58 I wanted her to feel like a queen.
10:01 This coat felt really royal, like a garment
10:05 that a queen would wear.
10:06 She was wearing an incredible Tiffany's necklace.
10:09 I think that necklace sold right after that,
10:11 so Tiffany's, I'm waiting for my commission check.
10:14 Thank you very much.
10:15 But more than how she looked, it's how she felt.
10:18 We got to see Celine in front of the world again,
10:21 looking healthy and happy and strong,
10:24 and I think that is the greatest gift
10:27 from that moment for me.
10:29 That's it.
10:30 Thank you, Harper's Bazaar.
10:31 (upbeat music)
10:34 (clock ticking)
10:36 (upbeat music)
10:40 (clock ticking)
10:42 (upbeat music)
10:45 (upbeat music)
