00:00 A businessman was slapped with a RM56,000 fine by the Sessions Court in Ayacaro for

00:08 acting as a tonto or informant against the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and accepting

00:13 graft from eight transportation companies since 2017.

00:18 The fine was imposed by Judge Elizabeth Payawan on Tuesday after the accused, Norsham Ahmad,

00:25 pleaded guilty to 20 counts of charges of accepting RM34,855 from the eight companies

00:33 over the past six years.

00:35 The 51-year-old had received all the payments through online transactions by using his interest

00:41 to act as a middleman to induce a JPJ officer from not taking action against lorries belonging

00:48 to the companies concerned under the Road Transport Act 1987.

00:53 The offences were committed between January 2017 to March 2021 at various locations in

01:00 the state.

01:02 The charges were framed under Section 163 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term

01:07 of up to one year or a fine or both if convicted.

01:11 Based on the statement of facts, the accused set forth a record with two JPJ officers to

01:17 protect the eight transportation companies on various offences such as overloading.

01:24 The middleman would give these "customers" a special sticker that would be placed on

01:29 the lorries and when the JPJ officers spotted it, they would not take action.
