Five children were killed in a fire that razed through five squatter houses at a water village in Likas near Kota Kinabalu on Monday (Sept 30).

The victims, all girls aged one to 14, were found in two of the burnt down houses, said State Fire and Rescue Department deputy director Farhan Sufyan Borhan.

00:27He said the rescue effort was focused on locating the girls and putting out the fire while preventing
00:33it from spreading.
00:35The charred remains of the victims were found when the flames were brought under control.
00:40Earlier, Farhan said a distress call was received at 12.47pm and teams from various fire stations
00:47were dispatched to the scene.
00:49The fire destroyed five houses, a sundry shop and a store unit.
00:53Farhan said it was too early to determine the cause of the fire, but they found that
00:58the incident started in a house closest to the river.
01:02ACP Kasim Muda said police were on the scene to investigate and are working together with
01:08firemen and other security agencies.
01:11Police have classified the case as sudden death for now.
