00:00 In Palestine, Israel's criminal attacks against civilians in Gaza continues.
00:14 More than 20 Palestinians were killed and dozens injured in the latest shelling of residential
00:18 buildings in southern Gaza.
00:20 In Bejan, thousands took to the streets to demand better public services, salaries and
00:26 living conditions.
00:31 And in Vietnam, Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived for a two-day state visit to strengthen
00:36 bilateral ties under the premise of promoting a shared future.
00:43 More than 20 Palestinians were killed and dozens injured in the latest shelling of residential
00:49 buildings in southern Gaza.
00:51 The Palestinian Agency WAFA reported that 20 civilians were martyred in an attack by
00:56 Israeli warplanes on several houses in the city of Rafah, where people are still missing
01:02 under rubble.
01:03 In turn, two Palestinians were killed and several wounded in a nuclear attack on the
01:07 city of Kanjounis.
01:08 Occupation planes also carried out a series of shelling around Nassar Hospital in the
01:12 city after 67 days of the total siege of the Gaza Strip.
01:16 The number of people killed by Israel has reached 18,205, most of them children and
01:22 women, while the number of wounded is already close to 50,000 and the number of displaced
01:27 people is close to two million.
01:31 "The Jewish Israelis say this was a safe zone.
01:37 They say the west of Salah al-Hadin Street, this is a safe zone.
01:41 But there is no safe zone in all Gaza Strip.
01:44 They say the south is safe, Rafah is safe.
01:47 Where is the security in Rafah?
01:49 Every day there are strikes in Rafah.
01:51 There is no safe zone."
01:52 At the same time, Israeli occupation forces killed four Palestinians in Jenin amid violent
01:58 assaults and arrests in several locations in the occupied West Bank.
02:02 The assassinations took place in the midst of a violent assault by the occupation army
02:06 on Jenin and its refugee camp.
02:09 Local sources report that Israeli soldiers raided many houses after invading them with
02:13 military bulldozers and amid clashes with the Palestinian resistance in different areas.
02:18 In addition, they report that Zionist snipers were stationed on the roofs of residential
02:22 buildings and that Israeli forces surrounded the governmental hospitals in Ayyubin Sina,
02:27 Jenin and al-Rassi, preventing ambulances from transporting the dead Palestinians.
02:32 On the other hand, military incursions and arrests were reported in Askar Camp, Aqaba
02:37 City, and Silwat, where soldiers arrested, among others, a 12-year-old boy.
02:45 At a cabinet meeting in Ramallah, Palestinian Prime Minister Mohamed Shaddai condemned the
02:52 U.S. for supporting Israel.
02:54 "We condemn anyone who encourages Israel to continue its killings.
03:00 We closely monitor the United States' policy, marred by chaos and international confusion
03:05 in their support for Israel.
03:07 While claiming to be against the killing of civilians, the United States abused the Security
03:12 Council's resolutions to halt the war.
03:14 This unconditional support for Israel occurs without Israel adhering to the rules of international
03:20 humanitarian law."
03:21 On the other hand, U.S. President Joe Biden reiterated his unconditional support for Israel
03:28 and that he will continue to provide military assistance to this country.
03:32 "Tough spot.
03:33 We continue to provide military assistance to Israel until they get rid of Hamas.
03:45 But we have to be careful.
03:46 They have to be careful.
03:47 The whole world's public opinion can shift overnight.
03:51 We can't let that happen.
03:52 As I said after the attack, my commitment to the safety of the Jewish people and security
03:57 of Israel and its right to exist as an independent Jewish state is unchanged."
04:04 On Monday, police in the United States arrested Jewish demonstrators who called on President
04:09 Joe Biden to stop Israel's genocide against the Palestinian population off the Gaza Strip.
04:15 Police officers at the United States Capitol in Washington arrested more than 40 people
04:19 protesting on the grounds of the Hart Senate building.
04:22 The statement issued by the authorities claimed that the individuals were conducting an illegal
04:26 protest and were arrested for obstruction and resisting arrest.
04:30 The Jewish communities have organized several mobilizations in the United States in support
04:33 of the Palestinian cause to condemn Israel's war crimes and to call on U.S. President Joe
04:38 Biden to call for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
04:44 Meanwhile, also in the United States, in New York City, demonstrators called for freedom
04:51 for Palestine in front of the headquarters of the United States Mission to the United
04:56 Nations on the day of the global strike for Gaza.
04:59 From there, they condemned the agency's inaction and the White House's veto of a resolution
05:03 calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
05:10 In Chile, demonstrators waved Palestinian flags and chanted slogans to show their support
05:15 for Palestinians amid the ongoing Israel genocide in Gaza.
05:19 A police water cannon attempted to disperse the crowd in front of the embassy.
05:23 Wadi Adna Sarala Mohor, a Palestinian living in Chile, said U.S. opposition to a ceasefire
05:29 cannot go unpunished.
05:30 The United States vetoed a humanitarian ceasefire resolution in the U.N. Security Council on
05:34 Friday.
05:35 Meanwhile, Israel has pushed its military offenses deeper into the Gaza Strip and willingness
05:40 to discuss a ceasefire is waning, according to Qatari mediators.
05:44 More than 18,000 Palestinians have been killed since the war began and about 90 percent of
05:48 Gaza's 2.3 million people have been displayed inside the besieged territory, where U.N.
05:54 agencies say there is no safe place to flee.

06:14 Welcome back from the south.
06:38 European Union authorities reported that the number of migrants using the Mediterranean
06:42 route increased dramatically during 2023.
06:44 The European Border and Coast Guard Agency, Frontex, said that the total number of migrants
06:48 arriving in the European Union by non-regular means exceeded 355,000 at the end of last
06:54 November.
06:55 The Central Mediterranean route marked by crossing to Italy from Tunisia or Libya continues
07:01 to be the most common route of entry to the European continent.
07:04 Frontex warned that its figures are not exhaustive as they only include migrants processed by
07:09 government officials and not those entering the bloc undetected.
07:18 As the number of refugees soars around the world, the United Nations is urging countries
07:22 at a global summit this week to help displaced people and refrain from populist anti-migrant
07:27 rhetoric.
07:28 They manipulate, they create a fear of people coming to Europe, in this case for asylum
07:39 or for work.
07:41 Migrants also have rights.
07:42 They create a hostility in order to gain votes.
07:47 So this is a political manipulation.
07:49 The negative narrative that it is impossible and the only way is to close the borders and
07:54 push them back is wrong and not useful.
08:00 Indonesia urged more international assistance in the resettlement of Rohingya Muslim refugees
08:05 following the increased number of people having arrived in the country's northernmost ASEP
08:09 province in the last month.
08:10 On Tuesday, Foreign Office Spokesman Mohamed Iqbal told the press that the refugee problem
08:15 had been tackled very slowly.
08:17 Therefore, the government had asked the signatory countries and the international community
08:20 to take further responsibility for efforts to resolve the plight of the Rohingya refugees.
08:25 More than 1,500 Rohingya refugees have arrived by boat since November.
08:30 Some were denied landing by residents of ASEP Uttara District and Sabang Island, raising
08:36 concerns among human rights organizations.
08:38 UNHCR in Indonesia recorded 1,674 Rohingya refugees in seven different locations, four
08:45 of which are unsuitable for even a few days stay.
08:51 The most important is really to identify new sites because currently there are too many
09:01 refugees that are living in unsuitable sites and that's also important for the local communities,
09:08 that they see that refugees are not living in a coconut field, for example, that's not
09:16 an appropriate place to live.
09:21 So we are working on that while also ensuring together with our partners the provision of
09:29 humanitarian assistance.
09:32 So I think it's very important that we don't inflate the rejection.
09:40 It is not everywhere and there is also many Indonesians and Ajenins that understand that
09:47 there is a need for help, temporary, yes, but it is important that we help.
09:54 If we don't help, we will have a humanitarian catastrophe in front of you.
10:01 In Pakistan, on Tuesday, an attack by an explosive-laden vehicle on the main gate of a police station
10:07 in northwest of the country left 23 soldiers dead.
10:11 Local authorities also confirmed more than 30 wounded and the collapse of a police station.
10:15 Meanwhile, the army said that prior to the vehicle ramming, several militants tried to
10:19 enter the compound in the Deira Ismail Khan district, but failed and six attackers were
10:24 killed.
10:25 A militant group linked to the Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for Tuesday's attack.
10:30 Six white militant groups in Pakistan have been on the rise, especially in these regions
10:35 bordering Afghanistan after the hardline Islamist militant group Tariq al-Taliban Pakistan withdrew
10:40 from a ceasefire on 2022.
10:48 Thousands of demonstrators rallied in Belgium Tuesday demanding better public services,
10:51 salaries and living conditions.
10:53 The protests in central Brussels took place during EU negotiations on the new Stability
10:57 and Growth Pact, which aims to limit member states' debt and deficits.
11:02 Nations trying to spend their way out of the crisis would instead implement a series of
11:06 economic policies, such as budget cuts and tax increases, but critics say the policies
11:11 known as "austerity" won't work.
11:14 The European Trade Union Confederation, which represents 45 million members, claims the
11:20 planned claiming statement of the Stability and Growth Pact will force 14 member states
11:24 to cut a combined 45 billion euros from their budget next year alone.
11:30 European inflation fell more than expected in November to 2.4%, the lowest in more than
11:35 two years, bringing some relief to households hit hard by the economic impact of the coronavirus
11:40 pandemic and the conflict in Ukraine.
11:43 "People deserve to live in dignity, to have decent salaries, to have good working conditions
11:56 and they are not getting it from most governments in Europe and there's austerity measures being
12:04 imposed and we demand fair taxation so that there is enough money to go to the public
12:16 services and all European citizens, all European workers can live with dignity."
12:24 In Haiti, court clerks begin a new day on definite strike to demand the compliance of
12:29 agreements signed with the government in 2017.
12:32 During the day, protesters demanded the respect of the rights of all employees and claimed
12:36 the removal of discrimination in wages.
12:39 Court clerks are advocating for a rise in their fees and the approval of the statute
12:43 for notaries, which would allow them to enjoy other benefits.
12:47 Meanwhile, the National Association of Haitian Court Clerks informed that the strike will
12:51 affect the 18 national jurisdictions.
12:58 On Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky arrived in U.S. Congress to press
13:02 increasingly reluctant Republicans to back his country's fight against Russia with renewed
13:07 U.S. military aid.
13:08 Zelensky was due to meet with leaders in the Senate and House of Representatives before
13:12 moving to the White House for talks with President Joe Biden.
13:16 Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky made an impassioned plea for continued U.S. military
13:21 support on Monday in a Washington speech.
13:24 Mexican senators last week blocked a White House request for $106 billion in emergency
13:29 aid, primarily for Ukraine and Israel.
13:31 Conservatives said they would refuse the package for their close foreign allies if Democrats
13:35 and the White House did not also agree to far-ranging immigration reforms targeting
13:39 security on the politically sensitive U.S.-Mexican border.

14:29 On Tuesday, the President of China, Xi Jinping, arrived in Vietnam as part of a two-day state
14:33 visit which seeks to strengthen bilateral ties under the premise of promoting a shared
14:37 future.
14:38 The President held talks with the General Secretary of the Vietnamese Communist Party,
14:41 Nguyen Phu Thuong, and the country's President, Vo Pham Truong, with the expectation of taking
14:47 bilateral relations to a new level.
14:49 The two sides discussed the improvement of China-Vietnam relations, focusing on six main
14:54 areas, including politics, security, practical cooperation, public support, multilateral
14:59 affairs, and maritime issues.
15:06 I believe that your meeting will be successful and become a new historic mark to bring the
15:10 bilateral ties between the two countries, the two parties to a new height for the shared
15:15 hope and interest.
15:19 With a focus on seeking development for our countries, people's happiness, and progress
15:23 for mankind, I am willing to work with my Camera General Secretary to announce a new
15:27 positioning for our two countries and parties.
15:30 On the basis of deepening the China-Vietnam Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, we will
15:35 work together to create a China-Vietnam community with a shared future of strategic significance.
15:41 The United Nations ended its mission in Mali after 10 years of deployment in the country.
15:46 The mission, known as MINUSMA, officially withdrew the flag of the UN this Monday in
15:50 the capital city of Bamako.
15:52 The mission's objective was to support the fight against the insurgency in the country
15:56 after the Tuareg rebellion in 2012.
15:59 The withdrawal of troops continues to take place a week after the mission completed the
16:03 departure of its troops and personnel in Cebare.
16:07 In June, Mali's military government, which took power in 2020, demanded the departure
16:10 of the mission deployed since 2013, despite being affected by attacks by armed groups
16:17 in the Sahel region.
16:22 In a little more than two weeks, MINUSMA will close its door for good, a process that
16:29 began after the adoption of Resolution 2690, which followed the request by the Malian authorities
16:34 to withdraw the missions.
16:36 This process has involved the closure since the beginning of August of 10 of the 13 bases
16:42 we had in central and northern Mali, as well as in Bamako.
16:48 The head of the UN mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo voiced concern on Monday
16:52 about the escalating risk of direct military confrontation between the Democratic Republic
16:56 of the Congo and Rwanda as Kinshasa calls for a speedier withdrawal of peacekeepers.
17:01 In recent weeks, the situation in DRC's North Kibu province on the border with Rwanda has
17:06 further deteriorated, UN envoy Bento Keita tells the Security Council.
17:11 Relations between Kinshasa and Kigali, still tense since the major wars of the 1990s and
17:16 2000s, have soured in the last two years with the resurgence of M23 rebels in North Kibu.
17:21 DRC has accused Rwanda of supporting the Tutsi-led fighters who have seized waves of land in
17:27 the east of the country since the launching of an offensive in late 2021.
17:31 The heightening of regional tensions comes as Kinshasa has asked the world body for the
17:36 accelerated departure of some 14,000 peacekeepers starting this month, amid public perceptions
17:41 that the blue helmets are ineffective.
17:44 The situation has further deteriorated in North Kibu.
17:52 Regional tensions between the DRC and Rwanda have further escalated, heightening the risk
17:57 of a direct military confrontation that could also draw in Burundi.
18:02 Today, we are at an important turning point in relations between the United Nations and
18:07 the DRC, but also at an important moment for the country itself.
18:11 The DRC is in the middle of a political campaign, nine days away from presidential, general,
18:17 national, provincial and local elections.
18:19 It is also called for an accelerated, orderly and responsible withdrawal of MONUSCO.
18:26 On Tuesday, Egyptians cast their ballots in the last day of voting in a presidential election
18:31 that is certain to see President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi secure another term in office.
18:35 The vote, which began across the country on Sunday, has been overshadowed by the Israeli
18:39 aggression against Gaza on Egypt's eastern border.
18:42 The vote also takes place amid a staggering economic crisis in a nation of 105 million
18:47 people, with nearly a third living in poverty, according to official figures.
18:51 El-Sisi faces no serious challenges, although there are three other candidates.
18:56 The National Election Authority said that as of noon Monday, 45% of the citizens eligible
19:00 to vote had cast their ballots.
19:02 A runoff is scheduled for January 8-10, if no candidate secures more than 50% of the
19:08 votes.
19:13 Hopes of ending a critical climate summit on time faded early Tuesday as countries remained
19:17 far apart on key issues, including an agreement on what to do about the fossil fuels that
19:22 are causing dangerous global warming.
19:25 On Monday, critics condemned a draft agreement released in Dubai as a watered-down document
19:30 that won't stop climate change.
19:32 On Tuesday, demonstrators rallied just yards away from the plenary building, calling for
19:37 a phase-out of fossil fuels, fully funded public finance, gender equality and human
19:43 rights.
19:44 The draft document instead called on countries to reduce the consumption and production of
19:48 fossil fuels in a just, orderly and equitable manner.
19:52 The Bangladeshi envoy said a revised draft text would be presented on Tuesday.
20:02 So we are here today on this final day to really make sure that the voices of civil
20:06 society can be heard in the negotiations.
20:09 Yesterday we heard a lot of governments that were not satisfied with the text and so we
20:13 really hope to actually support them as they demand a stronger, a more effective outcome
20:18 of this climate negotiation.
20:19 And that's why today we were here to remind, to repeat actually the messages that civil
20:24 society expects a phase-out of fossil fuels.
20:28 Civil society expects that United Nations processes will promote human rights and not
20:32 undermine them.
20:33 And we expect that developed countries will fulfil their commitment on climate finance
20:36 because that's critical for effective climate ambition around the world.
20:45 Scientists and environmentalists monitoring the West Antarctic ice melt raised the alarm,
20:49 again Tuesday, about the global consequences of the rapidly accelerating melting.
20:53 A study published in the journal Nature Climate Change claims that warming has accelerated
20:58 to the point that the ice sheet is now experiencing inevitable melting, regardless of how much
21:03 the world reduces emissions of plant warming gases such as carbon dioxide.
21:08 In this sense, they say Antarctica is melting more than three times faster than it was in
21:13 the early 1990s.
21:14 Experts warn of cascading consequences on a global scale, from rising sea levels to
21:19 increased temperatures and changes in ocean currents.
21:22 Cesar Cardenas, a researcher at the Chilean Antarctic Institute, added that what happens
21:26 in Antarctica does not just save Antarctica but also has an impact on the rest of the
21:31 planet.
21:32 What happens in Antarctica does not stay only in Antarctica.
21:41 Nowadays we know the importance of the melting of ice shelves, for example, and how this
21:46 will affect sea level, not only here on the Antarctic coast but also given the climate
21:52 change scenario, which causes sea level rise all over the world.
21:55 Obviously, there will be regions such as the Pacific Island, for example, that will be
22:00 badly affected.
22:01 Everything is very connected.
22:04 Antarctica influences the rest of the continent at the atmospheric level, and of course that
22:08 has a key impact on the climate and in so many other aspects such as ocean currents.
22:14 The oxygen-rich ice water that sinks on the coast of the Southern Ocean goes to the bottom
22:19 and is a conveyor belt as it is cold in regions or the oceans of the planet.
22:25 And when this is affected, it will obviously affect the productivity and the oceans of
22:30 the entire world.
22:33 We have come to the end of this news brief, but before saying goodbye we want to thank
22:36 our Caribbean audience, especially the audience of Trinidad and Tobago.
