Austin and Katie discuss who might be next from the Crimson Tide to enter the transfer portal.

00:00 Welcome into another Bama Central Just a Minute alongside Austin Hannon.
00:04 I'm Katie Windham.
00:06 And Austin, it's December,
00:07 which means the transfer portal window has opened in college football.
00:10 And even though Alabama is playing the college football playoff,
00:13 has some really, or at least one really meaningful game coming up, possibly two.
00:17 We have seen some Alabama players in the portal,
00:20 Ja'Cory Brooks wide receiver, not a huge shock.
00:22 Tyler Buckner, quarterback, not a huge shocker.
00:25 And then two guys maybe not as familiar with the fan base,
00:27 because they haven't really played in Isaiah Hastings and Anquan Barnes.
00:31 Tyu Jones Bell entered the portal as well,
00:33 but he hasn't really been on the roster all year.
00:34 So that's kind of a gray area.
00:36 But with that, like I said, Alabama does have a big game,
00:39 the Rose Bowl coming up on January 1st.
00:42 Kind of what portal movement do you expect in the coming weeks?
00:46 Kind of what other guys might you expect to enter the portal?
00:49 Or do you think some of that will wait until after Alabama is done for the season?
00:53 Yeah, it's everybody's least favorite part of the year if you're an Alabama fan.
00:56 You're playing for a title, but in the back of your mind,
00:58 you're thinking about all these players that you've recruited
01:00 and have kind of helped develop the beginning of their career,
01:04 they might be leaving.
01:04 So that's the new age of college football, right?
01:07 It's guys that don't play at the big schools like Alabama.
01:09 They decide to take their talents elsewhere.
01:11 And I think from an outside perspective, you have to respect that.
01:15 Before any of these, like these are all just ideas.
01:18 I don't know any of these for sure.
01:20 I think some of the easy ones to point to are if you look at a depth chart
01:23 and you kind of go up and down it and say, OK,
01:25 who are the guys that have maybe been around for a couple years
01:27 that are maybe understanding that their opportunity might not be there
01:31 and might be elsewhere?
01:33 Of course, you've got to start at quarterback with Ty Simpson.
01:35 This is assuming that Jalen Milrow does come back.
01:38 I think it's a very high possibility that Simpson goes in the portal.
01:41 And as a huge recruit he was in high school,
01:43 I think he'll find an open spot somewhere at a power five school
01:47 and have an opportunity to start next year.
01:49 Because I think what we've seen from him earlier in the year has been pretty good.
01:52 We saw him obviously struggle a little bit in Tampa
01:55 with the offensive line play not being at the best.
01:57 But I think he's taken a couple of steps forward
01:59 in the moments we've seen him.
02:00 Obviously, he had the moment where he fumbled the ball at the one yard line
02:04 against--
02:05 I believe that was in the next last game before Auburn.
02:08 So yeah, I would expect him to go.
02:11 A guy like Danny Lewis at tight end with Dupree and Nyblack and Utes
02:15 kind of taking over those roles, I wouldn't be surprised if he left.
02:19 Running back's an interesting one because a lot of fans
02:21 wanted to see more of Justice Haynes this year, the true freshman.
02:25 But there's kind of some--
02:26 not rumors necessarily, but some thinking that maybe Roy Williams comes back
02:31 and uses his last year of eligibility.
02:34 And that would move him into the starting role.
02:36 And of course, Jamil, we expect to still be around
02:38 as he's kind of taking on a bigger role.
02:40 Shaz Preston has a lot of playing time at wide receiver.
02:44 You go on the defensive end or maybe on the offensive line.
02:47 James Brockermire, we saw his brother transfer last year.
02:50 He's still going to be in that rotation possibly
02:53 to start at center next year with Seth McLaughlin leaving.
02:55 So that's something to keep an eye on.
02:57 But wouldn't be too surprised if he feels like it's time for him to leave.
03:01 Elijah Pritchett kind of goes with that too,
03:03 with Caden Proctor kind of taking over that left tackle role.
03:07 And on defense, I think Sean Murphy at linebackers,
03:10 one I would probably look out for just because we've
03:13 seen Jihad Campbell really step into a huge role for Alabama this year.
03:16 And I think most people believe that Deontay Lawson will probably come back
03:19 for another year of school.
03:20 So that kind of muddies things up in the middle linebacker room for Sean Murphy
03:24 and guys like Justin Jefferson, who transferred in this year,
03:27 and Jeremiah Alexander, a couple of them that
03:29 have kind of been sitting around behind these really talented guys.
03:32 So I would keep an eye on those people.
03:35 I think obviously there's going to be a couple more guys that maybe
03:38 you didn't expect that just feel like they need to change.
03:42 And of course, none of those names that I listed are for sure.
03:46 Those are just more us talking about it and projecting what might happen.
03:51 Yeah, it's an interesting time of year because there's
03:54 some guys you think would definitely stick around to find other opportunities.
03:58 And then guys that don't get any playing time that do stick around
04:00 and things turn out well for them.
04:02 You look at this year a guy like Tim Keenan, that his first two years,
04:05 he played in two games.
04:06 And this year he's been a starter.
04:08 So sometimes it just-- guys do have to literally wait their turn at Alabama
04:11 before things work out.
04:12 But sometimes it's just never going to happen
04:14 with the way the roster works out and the turnover of what years guys come in
04:18 and their extra years of eligibility or whatever.
04:20 And so I think another guy that we'll see leave
04:22 is Eli Holstein at quarterback.
04:24 He's at the bottom of the depth chart, especially with Julian Sane coming in
04:27 and Milrow coming back and Dylan Lonergan probably coming back.
04:31 But I don't think we'll see anyone that has a chance of playing in the Rose Bowl
04:35 transferring before the Rose Bowl.
04:37 I think we may be at the end of the guys that
04:40 are entering before the playoff happens.
04:41 And the rest will kind of make their decisions after that game
04:45 or after Alabama season ends if they want to go somewhere else.
04:47 Because if a guy has a chance to play in this game,
04:49 whether it's on special teams or whatever,
04:51 they're probably going to take that opportunity.
04:53 Or if they're at a certain place in the depth chart where their name may be
04:56 called, if guys ahead of them get injured,
04:58 they're going to stick around for the bowl practice and the opportunity
05:01 to play in the college football playoff.
05:03 But that will wrap up today's Just a Minute.
05:04 Thank you so much for watching.
