00:00 Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we're taking a look at the 10 best remakes of classic video
00:10 games.
00:18 Before we begin, we publish new videos all week long, so be sure to subscribe to Mojo
00:22 Plays and ring the bell to be notified about our latest videos.
00:27 Metroid Samus Returns
00:35 It is hard to imagine any Metroid game needing a remake.
00:38 Sure, we had Zero Mission, which was a remake of the original NES title made for the GBA.
00:43 A remake for Metroid II on Nintendo 3DS, though?
00:47 Where do we sign up?
00:49 Metroid Samus Returns was remarkable in how it managed to make the IP feel like new again.
00:54 And all it really took aside from modern visuals was the inclusion of a parry mechanic.
00:59 There were also brand new abilities that required more frequent and managed use of your energy
01:03 meter that made the game somewhat easier without sacrificing the difficulty.
01:08 Really wish they had ported this to Switch though.
01:16 DuckTales Remastered
01:24 The original DuckTales NES game stood out for its challenging platforming, wondrous
01:29 environments, and catchy music.
01:31 However, the incorrectly titled DuckTales Remastered fixed up a few issues in the pogo
01:36 mechanics and navigation.
01:38 In case it was your first time experiencing the game, the remake allowed you to play on
01:42 an easier difficulty that displays a mini-map on your screen.
01:45 Of course, you could play it in a manner similar to the original if you're up for the challenge.
01:50 Plus, the art done by Tim Curry, not that one, and his team are truly spectacular, and
01:56 the addition of voice acting from the original cast made the game a true tribute to the classic
02:00 cartoon.
02:11 Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2
02:19 Have you tried to play the original Pro Skater games?
02:22 They may not have aged to die hard fans, but for a video game in general, they haven't
02:27 stood the test of time.
02:28 A remake was necessary, and Vicarious Visions blew everything out of the water with this
02:33 one.
02:34 Pro Skater 1+2 was the perfect depiction of how we had always remembered the original
02:38 games; completing objectives, pulling off sick tricks, and harassing the locals while
02:43 jamming out to a kickass soundtrack, all with incredible controls.
02:47 Regardless if you're into skating or not, we'd guarantee you'll have an insane amount
02:51 of fun with Pro Skater 1+2.
02:53 By the way, Xbox, that 3+4 remake Activision canceled before the acquisition?
02:59 You might want to uncancel that one.
03:01 You're sitting on easy money, Phil.
03:08 The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D
03:19 The original Ocarina of Time might be a bit tough for those not used to the technical
03:23 limitations of the Nintendo 64.
03:25 We're not just talking about controls, but framerate and UI as well.
03:30 Thanks to the capabilities of the 3DS, though, Ocarina of Time has never felt so free and
03:35 fluid before.
03:36 With the bottom screen now displaying your inventory, you no longer had to stop everything
03:41 just to look at a separate menu.
03:43 You can switch equipment on the fly, all while enjoying the living, breathing, beautiful
03:46 land of Hyrule.
03:48 Even on a smaller screen, this was the better way to experience the N64 classic.
03:53 If only they didn't shut down the eShop.
04:01 Final Fantasy VII Remake
04:10 It really isn't all that difficult to play the original Final Fantasy VII, as the game
04:14 has been ported to just about every platform imaginable.
04:18 Yet we understand why some might be put off by the combat system.
04:22 Those wanting something more action-heavy got their wish with Final Fantasy VII Remake,
04:27 and it was a love letter for both fans young and old.
04:30 The storytelling felt more cohesive than before, the world was fully realized thanks to today's
04:35 innovations in technology, and the change in combat was far more engaging and challenging
04:40 to tussle with.
04:41 If there was any reason as to why so many of us are excited for Final Fantasy VII Rebirth,
04:46 it's because of what we experienced here back in 2020.
04:54 Star Fox 64 3D
05:01 Make fun of us Star Fox fans all you want.
05:04 We know that 64 is sort of the only excellent game in the franchise, but there's a reason
05:08 for that.
05:09 Just playing the 3DS remake can show you why people loved the original.
05:13 The challenge in getting a high score, the epic boss fights, the way you can discover
05:17 routes to other planets, all with significantly improved graphics on the 3DS.
05:23 A legendary N64 title was forever preserved here, and polished up with new controls and
05:28 character animation.
05:29 And it even came with an incredibly fun online multiplayer mode.
05:33 What more could have been asked for here?
05:35 Now, let's remake it again.
05:41 Tomb Raider Anniversary
05:57 The first Tomb Raider game from 1996 is, uh, rough.
06:03 The tank controls do not do the exploration justice, and sometimes it can make combat
06:07 frustrating.
06:09 Tomb Raider Anniversary fixed all this, and did so effortlessly.
06:12 Jumping, climbing, shooting, it all felt so natural, and in line with what other games
06:18 were doing at the time.
06:19 And if you have the game on PC, you can enjoy all of it at a buttery smooth 60 frames per
06:24 second.
06:25 Look, remasters are great and all, but Anniversary is the better way to relive the classic, or
06:30 play it for the first time.
06:32 There's just no question.
06:41 Super Mario RPG
06:50 For years and years and years, we had been begging for Nintendo and Square Enix to at
06:56 least re-release the original Super Mario RPG.
07:00 There's almost nothing wrong with it.
07:02 So imagine the shock and utter joy on fans' faces when this dropped.
07:07 There's a reason so many of us have been screaming for this title, and the new visuals,
07:12 cutscenes, and soundtrack done by the original composer, Yoko Shimomura, it's everything
07:18 we could have wanted.
07:19 We never thought this game would ever exist outside of the SNES original, but we have
07:24 it now, and it is amazing.
07:33 Spyro Reignited Trilogy
07:41 Despite not going through as many significant changes as a certain marsupial, Spyro Reignited
07:46 Trilogy helped the original titles from Insomniac Games become their fully realized renditions.
07:52 Developed by Toys for Bob, Reignited Trilogy rebuilt the first three Spyro games with new
07:57 visuals, animations, textures, and even an entire new score from Steve Copeland.
08:02 This was the perfect way to unleash the dragon and reintroduce him to new generations who
08:07 kept asking what all the fuss was about.
08:10 Now where's our Spyro 4?
08:17 Crash Bandicoot Insane Trilogy
08:28 Before the best dragon in gaming got his remake treatment, we had Insane Trilogy, a remake
08:33 of the first three Crash Bandicoot games entirely rebuilt from the ground up.
08:38 Now you could play Crash Bandicoot, Cortex Strikes Back, and Warped with refined controls,
08:43 modernized visuals, and a complete unaltered retelling of the original story.
08:48 Not only did this show how many fans of the Bandicoot were still out in the world willing
08:52 to fork over the ducats, it's also paved the way for many, many other classic platformers
08:58 to come back from their graves.
08:59 Hey, we wouldn't be getting remakes for Gex or Tomba if it wasn't for Crash Bandicoot.
09:05 What's the best remake for a retro game you've played?
09:10 Did it make our list?
