00:00 2023, a year with a little bit of everything. For many of us, we've had ups and downs and
00:06 there have been plenty of news to talk about. The Welsh sporting world took a massive hit
00:10 after the World Cup last year, when in January, one of the biggest sporting icons to come
00:14 out of Wales announced his retirement. Over 100 caps, the first World Cup this century,
00:19 and a Euro semi-final later, and Welsh football fans had to say goodbye to the best Welshman
00:24 to ever do it, when Gareth Bale retired.
00:26 Honestly, he's so proud every time he puts that jersey on. So, of course he'd be missed
00:31 and it's not the news that we wanted to start the year, but we all knew it was going to
00:35 come at one day, we just didn't know when that day was going to come.
00:38 Januaries can be bleak, but we've got an ounce of fun to put into our lives when we caught
00:42 up with our friends over at Flexible Options about how to keep spirits up during the cold,
00:46 dark days of winter.
00:47 Let's do more of some crafts and smile.
00:48 Craft, which is really good, it's quite distressing and relaxing.
00:59 Later on in January, a ship which was discovered years ago in the bank of the River Usk returned
01:03 to Newport. Historians have called it one of the most important archaeological finds
01:07 in British maritime history. And we got to take an up-close look at the ship.
01:12 In the last couple of days, we've reached a milestone on the project, which is the completion
01:17 of the active conservation of the Newport ship. It was so big it had to be disassembled
01:21 and raised into thousands of individual ship timbers.
01:25 If you wanted something weird and wacky, the one and only Captain Beany really came through
01:29 for us. When he sadly announced he was closing his Bean Museum of Excellence, but just being
01:33 able to step through those hallowed halls once was a real once-in-a-lifetime experience.
01:38 It's one of its kind and why not? And am I pleased to announce the fact that I've really
01:46 established a lot of public response because, believe it or not, I've had over 1,200 visitors
01:54 from all over the country, let alone all over the planet.
01:59 Then Easter was upon us and, well, this story needs no introduction.
02:02 I would just come here for fun. We love Cardiff. A day out in Cardiff, have some fun, enjoy
02:08 the weather while we've still got it. Just basically have a fun, smile. And enjoy the
02:13 sunshine as well. To celebrate Star Wars Day on May 4th, we
02:17 travelled all the way to Milford Haven on the other side of the galaxy to find out about
02:21 the humble beginnings of the Millennium Falcon. People still don't actually believe us when
02:31 we tell them. They hear the story for the first time. Millennium Falcon built in Wales?
02:35 That's an American film, isn't it? Folly Farm welcomed a new member of the family
02:40 when young female Sloth Button joined the team and quickly made herself right at home.
02:47 And then of course, the 20 mile an hour lot. Actually, no, I think we've heard quite enough
02:51 about that this year. And that brings us up all the way to Christmas
02:54 and we can all look back on an exciting 12 months from Star Wars to Sloths and everything
02:58 in between. Overall, it wasn't a bad year. James B. Watkins, reporting from Wales.
