00:00 My name used to be the most difficult word for me to say.
00:15 Growing up with a severe stutter, I gravitated towards not speaking.
00:31 I hated that I was unable to say the words to express my thoughts, feelings, and emotions.
00:51 Once at a party as a teenager, I meet this girl and we hit it off.
01:04 We start holding hands and then she asks me, "What is your name?"
01:15 So I reply with "Shhhhh" and as I am struggling to tell her who I am, she lets my hand go
01:35 and walks away.
01:43 Was it something I didn't say?
01:57 This basic act of speaking that everyone else did so
02:20 effortlessly was mission impossible to me.
02:27 I had enough, something had to change.
02:36 First I learned a breathing technique to control my stutter.
02:45 Then I joined Toastmasters to overcome the fear of public
02:58 speaking and trust me, it was terrifying at first.
03:06 Then I even started doing stand-up comedy because why stop there?
03:21 Adversity is defined as misfortune but when I reflect on my journey, it becomes clear
03:33 that my stutter has been the main drive behind this burning desire to destroy my fears.
03:58 Was initially a misfortune, proved to be a hidden fortune.
04:10 Not only can your adversity be overcome, but it is also the source of so many positives
04:25 that define who you are as a person.
04:31 Stuttering remains a daily challenge for me, but every time that I speak, I focus, take
04:45 a deep breath and walk through the fire.
04:52 To speak or not to speak, now I choose to speak.
