The YEP's Peter Smith reflects on Leeds Rhinos' 41-22 win over Wakefield Trinity at Headingley on Boxing Day.
Transcript
00:00 Well here we are at Headingley about an hour after the Wetherby Whaler festive challenge
00:07 finished. Leeds Rhinos 4-1 Wakefield Trinity 22 which doesn't really tell the story of
00:13 the game. Wakefield were 22-6 up at half time and deservedly so. They were 14-0 ahead, 16-0
00:21 ahead after 14 minutes. Played really well in the first half. Leeds were poor before
00:26 the break but they settled down and played some good stuff. The Rhinos in the second
00:31 half had a lot of young kids on at one stage for the final 20 minutes and they went well.
00:38 I thought there were some very good signs from the likes of Tom Nicholson-Morton, Jack
00:43 Sinfield had an excellent second half. Lewis Roberts played well. The new signings for
00:51 Leeds - mixed bag really. Lachie Miller had a poor first half at Barnsback well in the
00:59 second which is probably a fair reflection of the team. Andy Akkers had a good game particularly
01:05 in the third quarter and there were some good contributions from Matt Frawley at times and
01:11 Mikael Gudemund who got over for a try late on for Wakefield when they had their strongest
01:18 available side on in the first half. Played some really good stuff and looked quite sharp
01:23 and well drilled and cohesive. A lot of changes affected them in the second period but there's
01:30 certainly plenty for Darrell Powell to build on. I think he'll be pretty happy with it.
01:35 The main thing for Leeds, they got through with no major new injury concerns. It's over
01:40 a month now until their next pre-season game and I think there's a lot of work still to
01:45 be done but some positive signs for both teams.
