00:00 A scary injury on Monday Night Raw, WWE commentary cuts coming, and Rock 'The Dwayne' Johnson
00:06 might have just set up a match with Roman Reigns.
00:09 Happy New Year, fam!
00:11 I'm Oli Davis, and this is the WrestleTalk News.
00:21 Despite Christmas being nearly a week old, Hunter Claus teased one last special present
00:26 on the 30th December - not going to confirm or deny the rumours of a former WWE Champion
00:31 appearing at WWE Raw Day One, but I will say to stay tuned…
00:37 You naughty Paul.
00:38 You naughty, naughty Paul.
00:40 Many speculated it could have been Andrade, who had reportedly finished with AEW that
00:44 same day.
00:45 Maybe it could have been Brock Lesnar.
00:47 Perhaps it could be CM Punk making his latest emotional return to wrestling.
00:53 But the Monday Night Raw Day One special trumped even the loftiest of expectations.
00:59 It was Jinder Mahal.
01:01 Naughty Paul.
01:02 You naughty, naughty Paul.
01:03 Triple H was trolling, because Mahal was interrupted by a returning Rock 'The Dwayne' Johnson,
01:09 who seemingly debuted a remixed version of his entrance music, with Michael Cole ejaculating.
01:18 It appears WWE ring announcer Samantha Irvine wasn't told, with her shoot reaction being
01:22 caught on camera.
01:29 The Dwayne's appearance appeared to be the latest in a run of fanservicing segments with
01:33 no follow-up - like his one night SmackDown return back in September - until he asked
01:37 the live crowd where he should sit when he gets dinner tonight.
01:41 Should he sit in a booth, at the bar, or at the head of the table?
01:47 The heaviest tease he'll face his Bloodline cousin, the Head of the Table Roman Reigns,
01:52 yet.
01:53 The Rock himself has revealed that match was originally 'locked' to take place at 2023's
01:58 WrestleMania 39, where Reigns instead beat Cody Rhodes.
02:02 If Rock vs Reigns is happening at Mania 40, it means we'll get to see the latest chapter
02:07 of Cody in his never-ending story.
02:19 And Cody isn't the only WWE guy getting his role cut.
02:23 PWInsider has reported that WWE's New Year's resolution is to cut back on announcers.
02:28 As of Raw's Day One show, announce teams will all consist of two-man booths.
02:33 That means that Michael Cole's time on SmackDown ended last month.
02:41 Cole was reportedly kept on the SmackDown team back in August during the last shake-up
02:45 because WWE's broadcast partners wanted him to be the primary face of the product,
02:50 keeping him on both brands.
02:52 It was also a way to provide support for the less experienced Patrick.
02:56 That means SmackDown will now be announced by just Kevin Patrick and Corey Graves, while
03:00 the Raw booth is expected to be Cole with Wade Barrett.
03:03 Cole needed his three decades of experience to deal with an on-air injury on Raw's Day
03:07 One special.
03:09 During the Imperium vs Kofi Kingston and Jey Uso tag match, Giovanni Vince's head
03:13 whiplashed onto the canvas from taking a mid-air dropkick bump.
03:17 Vince appeared dazed and stayed on the mat following the spot.
03:20 The referee paused the match, communicated with backstage officials and made the call
03:24 to end the bout early.
03:25 The ringside doctor tended to Vince, who rolled out the ring.
03:28 Thankfully, Vince himself has posted an update on X.
03:31 Sto bene, grazie mille.
03:34 Praying hands emoji.
03:35 Which is Italian for 'I am fine, a thousand thanks'.
03:40 Now hot tag to Pete for the full review of Raw Day One.
04:10 Luke is off this week, so now it's time for my review of Monday Night Raw...in about
04:15 five minutes.
04:16 This Day One episode of Raw began with Wade Barrett and Michael Cole in the ring, running
04:20 down all the matches for the night, which I quite liked.
04:22 More of this.
04:23 It also made the night feel more important with a bunch of title matches.
04:26 But we started with a non-title match, Becky Lynch vs Nia Jax, which to me seemed like
04:31 a pretty done deal before we went in.
04:33 They were hyping this as 'five years in the making', referencing Nia breaking Lynch's
04:38 face in late 2018.
04:39 And it seemed like to me that this was done to give Lynch a nice win heading into Mania
04:42 season, giving the match some heat to make Becky's win have even more significance.
04:47 Nia Jax won clean.
04:48 And if you know how much I like Becky and how much I'm not a fan of Nia's in-ring
04:52 work, you'd expect me to be mad about this.
04:54 But I'm really not, because this match ruled.
04:57 I don't know what magic these two were making, but they told an incredible David vs Goliath
05:02 story, whipping up the crowd in attendance in a frenzy with every near fall as the match
05:07 progressed.
05:08 A Lynch-Samoan Drop, a Disarm that Nia powered out of, a Sunset Flip Powerbomb, but in the
05:12 end it was that punch once again.
05:15 Becky leapt off the second rope, and Nia caught her with an uppercut, which Lynch sold like
05:19 she'd been shot.
05:20 Nia then delivered the Annihilator for the win, and the crowd in Jax's hometown were
05:25 rabid with booze.
05:27 This was really, really good.
05:29 Cody Rhodes then came out to the ring after a recap of Shinsuke's Night Before Christmas
05:32 rendition and said he wants to finish this chapter of the story tonight.
05:36 Shinsuke appeared on the screen and said, "No.
05:39 Next week."
05:40 Alright.
05:41 Kofi Kingston teamed with Jey Uso to take on Imperium next, which ended with referee
05:44 stoppage after it looked like Vince was injured after a nasty bump in the ring.
05:48 Following a Kofi Dropkick, it looked like Vince either caught the Dropkick in the face
05:52 or bounced his head off the mat hard when he landed, or both.
05:55 Unfortunate for everyone involved, particularly Vince, of course, though he has since tweeted
05:59 to say he's fine, so fingers crossed he's not out for too long.
06:02 Best wishes on your recovery, Vince.
06:04 After a video package of WWE's Holiday Tour, The Miz hosted MizTV, advertised as special
06:09 guests being "The Judgment Day".
06:11 Instead, it was just R-Truth representing Judgment Day.
06:14 Truth says he's doing PR work for them, he's doing admin work, because nobody likes
06:18 Judgment Day so he's trying to make them more likeable.
06:20 They were interrupted by JD McDonough and Dominik Mysterio, who said Truth isn't in
06:24 Judgment Day, to which Truth replied by saying that JD was the one who lost the Loser Leagues
06:28 Judgment Day match.
06:29 Dominik got booed an insane amount in his hometown of San Diego, but a tag match was
06:33 set up of JD and Dom vs a reunited Awesome Truth.
06:37 Triple H cares about you fans who have nostalgia for 2011.
06:40 The match was absolutely nothing, centred around the comedy of R-Truth not knowing what
06:44 team he was on, and while some bits landed, like him standing in the neutral corner, other
06:49 bits didn't and it felt like the joke overstayed its welcome a bit.
06:52 Awesome Truth won.
06:53 The new women's tag champs Kayden Carter and Katana Chance were partying in a pre-recorded
06:57 segment because they like to party, and were interrupted by Piper Niven and Chelsea Green,
07:01 who set up a rematch for next week's Raw.
07:03 After a video package earlier in the night hyping the match, and a quick video package
07:06 here hyping Rhea Ripley, we got Ripley vs Ivy Nile for the Women's World title.
07:11 This was also a very solid match, with Nile getting a bunch of good offense in, but ultimately
07:16 succumbing to Ripley with a headbutt, knee to the face, and a riptide for good measure.
07:20 Both look good coming out of this, and leaves room for Nile to challenge in the future while
07:24 keeping Ripley strong.
07:25 Great stuff.
07:26 We then got the return of a former WWE Champion.
07:30 As Oli mentioned earlier, it was initially revealed to be Jinder Mahal, which I found
07:34 very funny that they were also leaning into the joke of him being a former WWE Champion.
07:39 Until the joke continued.
07:41 And continued.
07:43 And continued.
07:44 Jinder cut a lengthy promo about America and why it was bad, while reciting the national
07:48 anthem in Punjabi and getting the fans to boo their own national anthem.
07:52 It's actually quite clever.
07:53 Mahal called himself the Unifier, saying America has never been more divided.
07:57 And then, after quite a long time, The Rock made his return to Raw, and despite the best
08:01 efforts of Michael Cole, this was a fun moment.
08:04 And I was looking forward to Rock coming out, hitting a Rock Bottom on Jinder Mahal, and
08:07 we could move on with our lives.
08:08 So The Rock then cut a LONG promo about Jinder Mahal for some reason, saying everyone knows
08:13 about his resting bitchface and calling him the biggest asshole on the planet, stuff which
08:16 doesn't make sense because Jinder is barely on our screens.
08:20 Why is Jinder the focus of this promo?
08:22 The Rock then sang a song about his balls or whatever, and then decided he wanted to
08:26 beat him up.
08:27 Jinder striked first, but of course Rock came back, hit the Spinebuster and the People's
08:31 Elbow to leave him laying.
08:32 If the segment had ended there, I would have called this a colossal waste of time, but
08:36 Rock did give a hint about a match with Roman Reigns that Oli covered earlier.
08:40 Now, there's Elimination Chamber coming up in Australia, with the governmental board
08:45 responsible for bringing WWE to Australia requesting The Rock to be there at that show.
08:50 Could they be doing Rock vs. Roman at Elimination Chamber to set up Roman vs. Cody at Mania,
08:55 the last hurrah of Roman's title reign being beating The Rock before dropping it to Cody?
09:01 Or is that just my wishful thinking and optimism, and it's just going to be Rock vs. Roman
09:05 at Mania and Roman retains again and the cycle continues?
09:09 I like the idea of Rock vs. Roman, just not at WrestleMania.
09:13 The loss of Cody at WrestleMania 39 is only marginally justified if he then wins at Mania
09:18 40.
09:19 If that spot gets taken by Rock, with Roman retaining again, it will make that loss even
09:24 worse in retrospect.
09:25 So this segment on Raw was 21 and a half minutes, and it did not need to be that long at all.
09:31 We also got a recap of that segment immediately after an ad break where I think Michael Cole
09:35 came again.
09:36 Shayna Baszler and Zoey Stark beat Tegan Noct and Natalya in a mostly nothing match with
09:40 little crowd heat.
09:41 How are the crowd supposed to care when they don't get enough time to have a great match?
09:45 Needed all that time for Rock and Jinder of course.
09:47 And after a video package hyping it, we got Drew McIntyre vs. Seth Rollins for the World
09:51 Heavyweight title.
09:52 This was another great match between the two, because how could it not be at this point,
09:56 with loads of great counters upon counters as the two know each other so well.
09:59 Damian Priest tried to cash in his Money in the Bank briefcase during the match, including
10:03 a briefcase shot to Rollins behind the referee's back, but Drew stopped the cash-in with a
10:07 Claymore to Priest and a German Suplex to Dominik.
10:10 Drew then hit a Claymore on Rollins, but in pinning him, he dragged his foot onto the
10:14 bottom rope, meaning the one person who beat Drew again was Drew.
10:18 Seth came back and hit the stomp for the win to end the show.
10:21 The finish was a little wonky, as it did make Drew look a little stupid, but I get what
10:26 they were going for with Drew being his own worst enemy once again.
10:30 The wrestling on this show was okay too great, with Nia vs. Becky blowing my expectations
10:34 out the water, Seth vs. Drew being fantastic as always, and a good Ripley vs. Ivy Nile
10:39 match.
10:40 That Rock segment was insanely long though, and while it builds a lot of intrigue for
10:44 WrestleMania season, I don't know if all of it is good curiosity.
10:47 Some of it, for me, is fear.
10:50 Fear that they're going to do the wrong thing again.
10:52 This Raw was a 3/5.
10:54 2024 has just begun, and Oli and Luke have some bold predictions for what could happen
10:59 this year.
