Heavily hit parts of NSW, Queensland to see clearer conditions
Cloud covering is clearing across rain-hit parts of northern NSW and Queensland, but a thunderstorm risk remains for much of NSW, Victoria, and Tasmania. The hardest hit parts will likely be around the NSW and Victoria border.

00:00 Hello it is Angus here at the Bureau of Meteorology for an update on severe thunderstorms across
00:04 southeastern Australia.
00:06 Again today is the 3rd of January 2024, can't believe I'm saying that, and let's start with
00:12 a look at satellite imagery and there's a couple of things I wanted to show on the satellite
00:16 imagery from this morning.
00:18 The first is the lack of cloud across this part of the country here, southeastern Queensland,
00:22 northeastern New South Wales, some of the areas which have been hit really hard with
00:26 heavy rain and flooding since New Year's Eve have now got a brighter, drier, more settled
00:32 stretch of weather as the clean up is underway across this part of the country.
00:36 But it's not clear everywhere, we are seeing a band of clouds stretching from inland South
00:40 Australia across Adelaide and making its way down towards Tasmania, Victoria and southern
00:46 parts of New South Wales again and it is these areas down here in the south where thunderstorms
00:51 are likely to become an issue through the course of Wednesday afternoon.
00:54 If we switch off of the satellite image which is what has happened so far this morning and
00:59 onto the rain forecast to see how things are looking for the next few hours, we will start
01:04 to see some areas of rain really pop up through the early hours on Wednesday afternoon through
01:09 southeastern parts of the country.
01:10 There's a broad thunderstorm risk, I'm going to try and outline it here, it goes inland
01:14 of Sydney all the way across to the far west of Victoria and much of Tasmania as well.
01:20 Now storms are possible through all of these areas through Wednesday afternoon and evening
01:25 but in particular the risk of severe thunderstorms is in here, it's around the Victoria/New South
01:30 Wales border in the south east of the country.
01:33 Severe thunderstorms are storms which get large enough to generate any of the following.
01:37 Heavy to intense rainfall, damaging to destructive wind gusts and large to giant hail and that
01:44 is possible through these areas but in particular the far east of Victoria around Gippsland,
01:48 the far south east of New South Wales around the Snowy Mountains and the South Coast Forecast
01:53 District.
01:54 If we look ahead to tomorrow as well into Thursday we'll notice another area of thunderstorm
01:59 risk but it does start to slide northwards just a little bit.
02:02 In general for Thursday, thunderstorms become most likely around southern and central New
02:06 South Wales, maybe just the far north east of Victoria as well but there is generally
02:11 a north eastward movement to the thunderstorm risk for tomorrow.
02:15 At the moment, at the time of filming, which is around midday AEDT, there are no severe
02:20 thunderstorm warnings active yet across the south east of the country but our team is
02:25 watching closely all through the afternoon this evening and tonight we will be looking
02:29 for severe thunderstorms and issuing those severe thunderstorm warnings as and when necessary
02:34 to give you a heads up about the incoming severe weather.
