A massive storm will wallop millions of Americans with snow, ice, and severe thunderstorms early in the second week of January.

00:00 This will become at least a big chunk of part of what seeds our next storm moving through the central U.S.
00:08 We have a little lightning out there west of Forks and west of areas around the area around the Olympic Peninsula of Washington State.
00:16 So that system is going to be cruising through the Rockies and bringing us some widespread trouble.
00:21 So the clouds are thickening up. Here we have the view from the all-classical radio camera in Portland, Oregon.
00:25 And we're going to be dealing with one to two feet of snow for the Oregon Cascades.
00:28 We'll look at that in a more specific way in our next hour.
00:32 But that becomes the major storm that will sweep across the nation from the Rockies into the Midwest and eventually the east
00:38 with severe weather threats returning tied to that in the south and a big snow threat into parts of the Great Lakes.
00:44 So the weekend forecast, one storm moves through the northeast, but this next one is what we pick up.
00:48 And we're going to follow that in through the interior west.
00:51 And again, we can highlight that this is at about 3 p.m. Sunday, 3 p.m. Mountain Time, widespread snow.
00:57 There's the big trough. And watch how this thing strengthens into a really rapidly intensifying storm system
01:03 right over parts of Kansas. Strong low-pressure system there.
01:06 Winds converging, big-time snow on the north side, rain on the south side.
01:10 And as this follows the upper-level flow there, it'll be parked just north of Kansas City around 7 a.m. Tuesday or 6 a.m. Central Time.
01:18 So overall, we're looking at a big mess here with strong thunderstorms to the south, widespread swath of snow to the north.
01:24 And this will begin as snow changing over to sleet and then rain for parts of the interior northeast.
01:29 Tuesday morning could be tricky for some in areas like the interior part of Pennsylvania, at least to well west of I-81.
01:36 But as we look at the snowfall forecast tied to this, we are looking at 6 to 12 inches of snow in areas around Topeka, Kansas.
01:42 Keep in mind, the wind will be active, so blowing and drifting will contribute to the problems there.
01:46 Meanwhile, the severe threat Monday into Monday night for the Gulf Coast will be a big story, and there could be isolated tornadoes out there.
01:52 They're going to be inside for the National College Football Championship game, but thunderstorms
01:55 outside in Houston.
