Patrick Moorhead, CEO and Chief Analyst, Moor Insights joined TheStreet to discuss the potential risks of artificial intelligence.

00:00 There's a lot of fear, a lot of uncertainty surrounding artificial intelligence.
00:04 Many people have been highlighting just how powerful the technology is.
00:07 What is your take on that?
00:08 Is there a sort of line, Patrick, we might get up to where we say, "Uh-oh, maybe we all
00:13 went a little too far with its early development"?
00:16 So I think the conversation is very healthy and pragmatic because quite frankly, generative
00:22 AI in the wrong hands, used for the wrong purposes, could hurt a lot of people.
00:27 We did see a lot of these fears with electricity.
00:30 We saw these fears with elevators and even cars before horse and buggy.
00:36 And again, this is not to write this off, but I do believe at some point there needs
00:41 to be some sort of a kill switch that disables if the AI gets too smart and wants to take
00:50 over.
00:51 And that is a possibility in the future, and I think we need to be prepared for it.
00:57 What I don't think we should be doing that I've been seeing is giving the larger companies
01:01 the advantage through regulation.
01:05 Innovations in the world over the last 500 years have not been done by gigantic organizations
01:11 or companies.
01:12 They've been brought up by the smaller companies.
01:15 Google was a startup.
01:16 Tesla was a startup.
01:18 Microsoft was a startup.
01:20 Apple was a startup.
01:21 And we need to make sure that we have reasonable regulations that enable the smaller companies
01:27 to deliver this information in addition to the larger ones.
01:31 Are there any other precautions or type of safeguards that you think should be crucial
01:35 or at least considered to prevent those type of unintended consequences?
01:39 Yeah, I think we need a fast track for regulation when it comes to critical infrastructure.
01:45 Our telephone systems, our banking systems, our university, the energy grid, anything
01:52 that touches core services out there, water, for example.
01:56 I do think there does need to be a checking mechanism that when it comes to critical infrastructure
02:04 like that, it is very monitored.
02:06 Now there are a lot of regulations already in these very highly regulated businesses,
02:11 and I'm usually the last person to call from our regulation, but we do need to make sure
02:15 that we have safeguards for those specific industries to make sure that, quite frankly,
02:21 AI doesn't take over.
