00:00 Just before 1pm today, a 34 year old man walked into a medical centre in Junction Street at Nowra.
00:08 He is known to that medical centre and the medical staff that work there.
00:13 We believe he is a local resident to the south coast. During conversations with the doctor,
00:23 the man has become extremely agitated and spoken to many alarming things.
00:30 During that conversation, and unprovoked, he produced a firearm.
00:34 The staff working there and working with the doctor
00:40 contacted police immediately. Police from Nowra responded immediately.
00:47 The place and the street was closed down and a perimeter was set up and containment negotiations
00:54 commenced. Throughout the next little while, there were about four people who were able to
01:02 make their escape from inside the doctor's surgery, which left the gunman alone.
01:11 During this time, police continued their conversations with the gunman through the open
01:17 door and through the walls and the windows. At some stage, around about 2.40pm, so nearly
01:26 two hours later, the man emerged and police and he engaged in further conversation. But at this
01:35 stage, the man produced the gun and brandished it at police. The police at the time were holding
01:42 a ballistic shield. That ballistic shield was dropped during this initial confrontation
01:49 and the police retreated. The man picked up the shield, further brandished the gun,
01:55 raising it in the air and raising it at police. And a number of shots were fired by police
02:03 in the direction of the man. He was hit multiple times and he remained at the scene
02:10 where tragically, a little while later, he was pronounced dead, suffering from those gunshot
02:18 wounds.
