00:00:13 Hello and welcome to the National Skating Championships Canada 2024.
00:00:18 I'm Laurent Darvaux and I'll be your host for the Women's Junior Freestyle event.
00:00:25 I'm here with Alicia Pinault, a member of the National Team from 2015 to 2020.
00:00:33 We're currently in Calgary, Alberta at the Winsport Arena, the home of the 1988 Olympic Games.
00:00:40 Today will be the home for the Women's Junior Freestyle event.
00:00:44 Ali, what can we expect today after everything that happened yesterday?
00:00:48 Yes, so if we can go back to the short program that took place yesterday in the women's junior category.
00:00:55 In first place, we have Megan Woodley from Ontario, who had a 59.15, so a good score for the women's juniors.
00:01:03 She really did an incredible performance, no mistake, triple-triple with a triple Lutz,
00:01:09 arms in the air, really, without mistakes.
00:01:11 So we can expect maybe that she does something similar
00:01:15 and that could really put her on the podium if it's not to win the competition.
00:01:19 In second place from Quebec, we have Alexa Volkova, who had a 57.13,
00:01:24 so not too far behind Megan, but we still had a good mistake in the combination,
00:01:29 we were not able to do the second triple, but the quality of the program was incredible.
00:01:33 So really, we got a few points.
00:01:36 Finally, in third place, Lulu Lin from Ontario, who was the favorite for the women's juniors event
00:01:43 with a 56.58.
00:01:45 However, Lulu had some problems with the pirouette,
00:01:48 a very costly mistake, especially in the short program.
00:01:52 And if not, between fourth and tenth place, we only have five points difference,
00:01:56 so we can believe that the ranking will continue to change and evolve after this event.
00:02:02 So we are preparing for a high-color event, a rather fierce competition.
00:02:08 I can't wait to hear all this and have your analysis, Ali.
00:02:11 We are getting ready to go down to the ice to see our first warm-up group for the women's juniors.

00:09:26 [MUSIC]
00:09:52 We are back with our six ice skaters for the first warm-up group of the Junior Free Skating Ladies.
00:10:02 We will have Calissa Adlem from the British Columbia,
00:10:06 Alessia Taddeo from Quebec,
00:10:08 Emily Sells from the British Columbia,
00:10:11 Natasha Hewitt from Ontario,
00:10:13 Ashley Dinn from Ontario,
00:10:15 and finally Cassidy Sinclair from Alberta.
00:10:19 So, are you ready for this beautiful competition?
00:10:22 Absolutely!
00:10:24 So, tell me a little bit about the elements that are required in the women's free program.
00:10:29 So, we have seven jumps, we will have 11 elements in total, three pirouettes,
00:10:36 but really, we don't have a set number, it's not like in the short program,
00:10:40 where, for example, we had the triplet, which was mandatory.
00:10:44 The skaters have a lot more freedom in terms of what they want to put, what they want to show,
00:10:48 and put themselves in value.
00:10:50 Sometimes we will opt for a little easier jumps to try to gain quality.
00:10:56 Sometimes we will go a little more with complex jumps to sometimes take a chance,
00:11:00 we never know, sometimes it's paying off.
00:11:02 And otherwise, there is also a strategy to do jumps in the second part of the program,
00:11:06 we will come and gain a certain additional percentage of difficulty,
00:11:11 because we are more tired in the second part of the program.
00:11:14 In the six-minute warm-up period, we don't have time to warm up all these 11 elements.
00:11:20 How did you prepare yourself, Ali?
00:11:23 Honestly, it varied a lot, it depended a little on how I felt during the day.
00:11:30 Sometimes I was the kind of person to do a double and then the triple directly,
00:11:34 sometimes I would just do the triples directly.
00:11:37 And it happened to me, I remember once, at the Quatre Continents in 2020,
00:11:41 I had decided not to really do the triples in the warm-up.
00:11:46 I just did some nice doubles, I was first to pass,
00:11:49 it's also something to take into account when you pass first.
00:11:52 You still have to take an additional minute to relax,
00:11:57 to relax before starting the program.
00:11:59 Like the others, you don't get out of the ice, so you prioritize more…
00:12:04 - You manage your energy. - Exactly.
00:12:08 It was the same in dance, we didn't have time to do all the elements,
00:12:15 we chose those that put us more in confidence
00:12:18 or maybe sometimes those that were a little more difficult.
00:12:21 Exactly. It's really up to each skater.
00:12:24 For my part, I wasn't the kind of person to come and warm up pirouettes.
00:12:29 I told myself that I was going to be warmed up in my program.
00:12:32 But sometimes, if not, there are some skaters who prefer to just get more into the ice,
00:12:37 to have deep core, to do kick-offs, to do exercises
00:12:41 that allow us to re-focus on ourselves without necessarily jumping.
00:12:46 So we also have to take into account that the elements that we do in the warm-up,
00:12:53 it's a foretaste of the program, but you don't have to rely on that all the time,
00:12:57 because sometimes we have a bad warm-up,
00:12:59 and we have to say to ourselves, "Well, the bad is out."
00:13:02 Sometimes we have really good warm-ups, and then we get into the program,
00:13:05 and it doesn't go as planned.
00:13:07 So really, it's just about adjusting our mentality each time.
00:13:10 That's how we can prepare well.
00:13:13 [Music]
00:13:29 In the short program, we had the chance to see some kick-offs.
00:13:32 For the free program, it's a choreographic sequence. Is that right, Ali?
00:13:36 Yes, that's right. Normally, in the senior program, we'll have a kick-off in place
00:13:40 and the choreographic sequence.
00:13:44 But in the junior program, we'll just do the choreographic sequence.
00:13:47 We don't have the kick-off, but as we talked about earlier with Charlie,
00:13:51 sometimes the junior programs are more difficult than the senior programs
00:13:54 in terms of cardio, in terms of energy, because we have less time
00:13:58 to do practically the same number of elements.
00:14:01 And for my part, I've always found that the junior programs
00:14:05 were really more demanding in terms of energy, cardio, etc.
00:14:12 I had a year in my career where I was still an international junior
00:14:16 and a national senior. So I had to practice both programs,
00:14:19 but the difference was still big.
00:14:22 Super interesting. The last minute that was announced for the skaters,
00:14:27 we saw the coaches give a few little words,
00:14:32 key words or words of comfort, encouragement,
00:14:36 before having to leave the ice for the waiting period.
00:14:41 How did you find this waiting period?
00:14:44 I would say that for the junior programs, I liked to go first a lot better.
00:14:48 It was like we were coming together, it was over, we didn't have much time to think.
00:14:52 And since there were only three jumps in the junior program,
00:14:56 the warm-up went better, a little faster, we had more time.
00:15:00 So going first was good.
00:15:03 For my part, however, in the senior program, I liked it better,
00:15:06 maybe being second or third, having time to go out, relax a little,
00:15:10 analyze what I had done well versus what could be improved.
00:15:14 And really, in my opinion, the position that was the most difficult,
00:15:19 it was the last position, especially when I was first in the Canadian program.
00:15:24 It could play into the head to know, to hear all the notes go
00:15:28 before we compete ourselves, but to learn to do it quickly.
00:15:33 That's well said.
00:15:36 So this will be the time to officially start the free program for junior women.
00:15:44 The first skater from British Columbia,
00:15:52 Kelisa Adlam, she is coached by Karen and Jason Mongrain.
00:15:59 Her free program, Mr. Blue Sky,
00:16:03 a program signed by her coaches, Karen and Jason Mongrain.
00:16:09 piano plays softly
00:16:12 Sun is shining in the sky
00:16:21 There ain't a cloud in sight
00:16:25 It stopped raining
00:16:27 Everybody's in the play
00:16:30 Well, don't you know
00:16:33 It's a beautiful new day
00:16:37 Running down the avenue
00:16:43 See how the sun shines brightly
00:16:47 In the city, on the streets
00:16:50 Where once was pity
00:16:53 Mr. Blue Sky is living here today
00:16:58 Mr. Blue Sky, please tell us why
00:17:05 You had to hide away for so long
00:17:10 Where did we go wrong?
00:17:15 Hey you with the pretty face
00:17:21 Welcome to the human race
00:17:25 A celebration
00:17:27 Mr. Blue Sky's up there waiting
00:17:31 And today is the day we've been waiting for
00:17:36 Mr. Blue Sky, please tell us why
00:17:40 You had to hide away for so long
00:17:45 Where did we go wrong?
00:17:51 Mr. Blue Sky, please tell us why
00:17:55 You had to hide away for so long
00:18:00 Where did we go wrong?
00:18:05 Hey there, Mr. Blue
00:18:11 We're so pleased to be with you
00:18:14 Look around, see what you do
00:18:17 Everybody smiles with you
00:18:21 [music]
00:18:24 [music]
00:18:27 [music]
00:18:55 Oh, Mr. Blue, you did it right
00:18:59 But soon comes Mr. Night
00:19:03 Creeping over
00:19:05 Now his hand is on your shoulder
00:19:08 Never mind, I'll remember you this
00:19:13 Oh, I'll remember you this way
00:19:17 Mr. Blue Sky, please tell us why
00:19:21 You had to hide away for so long
00:19:26 Where did we go wrong?
00:19:30 Where did we go wrong?
00:19:33 Where did we go wrong?
00:19:37 Mr. Blue Sky
00:19:49 [applause]
00:19:52 Kallisa Adlim, who breaks the ice
00:20:02 for the Junior Libre program
00:20:06 Kallisa has a really nice technique
00:20:10 I love the time she takes to get in place
00:20:13 She's really patient
00:20:15 She doesn't jump too fast
00:20:17 But she does it well
00:20:20 She's able to get a nice height and a nice glide
00:20:23 Unfortunately, we fell on the first jump
00:20:26 But the rest of the program was quite well recovered
00:20:29 We felt she was getting more and more comfortable
00:20:32 as the jumps went by
00:20:35 We'll watch a few times here
00:20:39 A beautiful skater who really has beautiful lines
00:20:44 Here we can see the first jump, the triple flip
00:20:49 A bit too far back
00:20:51 We weren't able to do the combination of three jumps
00:20:54 Here we can see in the triple loop
00:20:56 Kallisa tried to do it
00:20:59 I'm curious to see what the judges, the technical controllers, will give her
00:21:05 Here the triple sock out
00:21:08 Absolutely beautiful
00:21:10 The first triple loop in combination
00:21:16 A nice glide at the exit
00:21:19 We talked about her beautiful lines
00:21:25 We can see the transition moves
00:21:28 A very complete program
00:21:30 The double axel
00:21:34 With the difficult entry
00:21:37 It will allow to gain additional points for the judges
00:21:41 A little jump at the end
00:21:43 We'll have to check if all the rotations were completed in the air
00:21:48 I think we'll have a deduction for that
00:21:53 On the pirouette side, we lost a few levels
00:21:57 Especially in the pirouette jump
00:22:00 We only have a level 2
00:22:02 The other two pirouettes in combination had a level 4
00:22:09 That's good
00:22:11 We can see the judges gave a deduction for the triple loop at the end of the program
00:22:17 We were missing a quarter of a rotation
00:22:20 She said she loved the adrenaline effect she has in competition
00:22:29 That's why she keeps practicing the artistic skating every day
00:22:36 And landing a new jump
00:22:39 She's looking for that little quest to continue
00:22:43 Did you feel that when you landed a new jump?
00:22:47 Yes, absolutely
00:22:49 It's the best day of my life when I landed that triple loop
00:22:52 The deduction for Kalissa
00:22:55 81.64
00:22:58 A little bit of a head ache
00:23:01 She probably went looking for a little more in the past
00:23:04 A total of 120.96
00:23:07 Since it was her first time skating, she's temporarily in the first row
00:23:13 The next skater representing Quebec

00:27:34 What an extraordinary end to the program!
00:27:38 Absolutely, Laurence!
00:27:40 Alessia, who had marked me yesterday in the short program,
00:27:44 it's certain that on the technical side, we still lack some features to be able to reach the...
00:27:51 -Rivalry with the rain. -Exactly.
00:27:54 Or just to be a little higher in the Canadian ranking.
00:27:57 However, it's really a skater who comes to touch us when she puts her foot on the ice.
00:28:02 I find that she has her attention to detail in her movements and everything.
00:28:05 It's really something that is unique to her.
00:28:08 It's a moment of silence for this wonderful choreographic sequence with the movement on the knees that was to cut the breath.
00:28:17 But it's certain that on the technical side, we won't be able to reach the entirety of the points that we would have liked to have.
00:28:24 We'll see the first triple salchow, which lacked rotation, almost one and a half, according to the technical specialists.
00:28:35 We'll see it again right here.
00:28:38 Alessia had a good speed going into the jump,
00:28:41 maybe a little bit of height power was missing to complete the rotation.
00:28:47 Double axel in combination with the double toe and the double loop.
00:28:56 Exactly.
00:28:58 The second triple, directly in the choreographic sequence,
00:29:02 a little bit of attention to detail.
00:29:07 Double toe in the air with the combination.
00:29:14 She put herself to go get a little more appreciation from the judges in the second part of her program.
00:29:24 Probably an athlete who is working on the other triples at the moment,
00:29:28 who may not be consistent enough to put them in the program at this time of the season.
00:29:33 But for a first year in the junior category, I think she has a lot of potential.
00:29:39 Yes, we can see on the screen that the pirouette cambré has only a level one.
00:29:45 So that's something that still hurts a lot on the technical side.
00:29:49 We lose a lot of points when we lose a level.
00:29:52 So we went from level 4 to level 1.
00:29:55 And that may still hurt the grade.
00:29:59 But it's her first year in the senior category.
00:30:03 She hasn't been with her new coaches for a long time.
00:30:06 I was just talking to Yvonne Desjardins, who told me that they've been working together for a few months.
00:30:11 Yvonne has a good background as a coach.
00:30:15 So I'm confident that she's in a good position.
00:30:18 I'm going to watch too.
00:30:22 Score for Alessia Tadeo, 73.75.
00:30:26 Which puts her temporarily in second place for a total of 114.45.
00:30:34 We're already seeing a reflection on the score.
00:30:37 Some will go back to see the sheets.
00:30:40 A nice first experience at the Junior Canadian Championship for Alessia.
00:30:50 Our next skater from British Columbia, Emily Sales.
00:30:54 Coached by Karen and Jason Mongrain.
00:30:57 Her free program on a Lala Land medley.
00:31:03 You got the invitation.
00:31:05 You got the right address.
00:31:07 You need the medication.
00:31:09 The answer's always yes.
00:31:11 A little chance encounter could be the one you've waited for.
00:31:16 Just squeeze a bit more.
00:31:18 Tonight we're on a mission.
00:31:20 Tonight's the casting call.
00:31:22 If this is the real audition.
00:31:24 Oh God, help us all.
00:31:26 You make the right impression.
00:31:28 Then everybody knows your name.
00:31:31 We're in the fast lane.
00:31:33 We should do till they discover you.
00:31:36 And make you more than blue.
00:31:38 You're singing now.
00:31:40 So when the stars align.
00:31:42 I think I'll stay behind.
00:31:44 You've got it going fine.
00:31:47 That's someone in the crowd.

00:32:30 City of stars.
00:32:32 Just one thing everybody wants.
00:32:36 There in the bars.
00:32:41 And through the smokescreen of the crowded restaurants.
00:32:47 It's love.
00:32:50 Yes all we're looking for is love.
00:32:53 From someone else.
00:32:56 A rush.
00:32:58 A glance.
00:32:59 A touch.
00:33:00 A dance.
00:33:01 A look in somebody's eyes.
00:33:04 To light up the skies.
00:33:06 To open the world and send it reeling.
00:33:10 Like I've tapped out of a hole.
00:33:13 Think I wanted to stay.
00:33:17 City of stars.
00:33:25 You never shined so brightly.
00:33:31 [music]
00:33:38 [music]
00:33:51 I think about that day.
00:33:53 I left him at a greyhound station west of Santa Fe.
00:33:56 We were seventeen but he was sweet and it was true.
00:34:00 Still I did what I had to do.
00:34:03 'Cause I just knew.
00:34:06 Summer Sunday nights.
00:34:08 We'd sink into our seats right as they dimmed out all the lights.
00:34:12 A technicolor world made out of music and machine.
00:34:15 It called me to be on that screen.
00:34:19 And live inside each scene.
00:34:22 [music]
00:34:24 It's love and they are sung.
