00:03 - All right, Joe.
00:04 Now, obviously the next thing is going to be,
00:06 that is one of the best jobs,
00:09 not just Joe in college football.
00:10 I mean, it's one of the premier jobs in sports, right?
00:15 I mean, the head football coach
00:16 at the University of Alabama,
00:18 Saban has held that ground for a very long time
00:20 and has been super successful.
00:22 These are major shoes that are going to have to get filled
00:26 in Tuscaloosa.
00:27 Now, I was just looking at this Pete Thamel tweet, Joe,
00:31 and he says, "There's no likely internal replacement."
00:33 Well, he's got that right.
00:34 They're not going to hand Tommy Reese the keys
00:38 to the Alabama Crimson Tide.
00:39 - Here's the Alabama, you know, yeah.
00:42 Here's the Oak Door and the Jam, right?
00:45 - Here we go.
00:46 Now, here's his quick projected list.
00:48 Dan Lanning, who I also saw McMurphy say Dan Lanning
00:51 would be at the top of the list.
00:52 Kalen DeBoer, Dabo Swinney, James Franklin, Mike Norvell,
00:56 and Marcus Freeman.
00:57 Have they watched any of them in the last few years?
00:59 - James Franklin.
01:01 - James Franklin, okay.
01:03 He says here, "All come with complications and big buyouts
01:07 "since it's difficult to move and trench coaches."
01:08 Let's remember something else, Joe.
01:10 There are a lot of guys running around,
01:12 not just college football, but the NFL,
01:15 who have Nick Saban ties,
01:17 that Nick Saban has brought in as assistants.
01:20 Whether that is Brian Dable, Lane Kiffin,
01:25 I'm not gonna say Kirby Swargs,
01:26 obviously Kirby's at Georgia
01:27 and he's built his own empire over there.
01:30 The Dable one's interesting to me, Joe.
01:32 The Dable one's interesting to me.
01:35 - Yeah, but here's the thing, Carver.
01:37 You know, he didn't address the transfer portal
01:40 or NIL at Clemson.
01:41 - He don't like it either, yeah.
01:43 - If you're an Alabama backer right now
01:45 and a legend is stepping down,
01:48 if this was three or four years ago,
01:50 circa Deshaun Watson, Trevor Lawrence, Clemson,
01:53 yeah, then I say it's a great fit for the organization
01:57 and the franchise and the team.
01:59 But he hasn't coached up a quarterback
02:01 since Trevor Lawrence left.
02:03 Kate Klubnik is pedestrian.
02:05 So, you know, pump the brakes on Dable just a little bit
02:09 because we saw Dable's defense take a step back too
02:12 after Brett Venables took the job at Oklahoma.
02:15 I will say what's attractive,
02:17 you think of former assistants,
02:19 Sarkeesian with Texas, I'm sure he'll get a call.
02:22 Lane Kiffin, what Lane Kiffin has done at Ole Miss
02:26 has built that program up.
02:28 10 wins at Ole Miss, back to back,
02:30 almost back to back years, second year there.
02:33 I mean, let's not forget that.
02:35 He's got Jack, he's recruited really well in Oxford.
02:39 Now you give him the keys to Tuscaloosa,
02:41 everything is open.
02:43 I would want a younger head coach.
02:45 Dan Lanning, I'll just say this,
02:48 physicality, offensive, defensive lines.
02:50 He was a graduate assistant in 2016 at Alabama,
02:54 was on Kirby's smart staff, was a national champion.
02:58 He's an up and comer, he's 35, 36 years old.
03:02 And you saw the progression of Bo Nix,
03:04 even with Kenny Dillingham now at Arizona State,
03:07 he builds staffs.
03:09 That's a pretty good fit, but would he wanna go?
03:12 I mean, here's the thing, would he wanna go?
03:14 Because, you know, it's 12 teams now.
03:17 So these coaches, if I'm Dan Lanning,
03:20 I have that train in motion in Eugene,
03:23 why do I wanna bolt?
03:24 I'm almost guaranteed a top 12 ranking, right?
03:28 - It's very tricky, Joe.
03:30 And whoever it is, I don't think it's gonna be,
03:34 like you mentioned Brian Dable,
03:35 and I saw a couple of these.
03:36 They need someone who's established in the college game.
03:40 That is a huge job.
03:43 The guys we're talking about,
03:44 this is gonna be a ripple effect, Joe.
03:46 This is gonna be a trickle down effect.
03:48 One of these guys, maybe it's one of the big names
03:51 we just mentioned from the famous-
03:52 - They're not getting Mike Elko type.
03:54 They're not gonna get a Mike Elko type.
03:55 - No, they are, Joe, this is Alabama.
03:58 They are getting a name.
03:59 One of these names that we are talking about
04:02 is taking this job.
04:03 - It's not gonna be Dabour.
04:05 I don't think it's gonna be Dabour.
04:06 - I don't think it's gonna be Kaelin Dabour either.
04:08 But I'm saying whether it's Lanning,
04:10 whether it's Dabo, whether it, I mean, James Franklin, God,
04:13 I just can't imagine that they would want him
04:15 to be the head coach.
04:16 - I love James Franklin, great recruiter,
04:18 but he can't coach it up.
04:19 He loses every big game.
04:21 - I think Lane's interesting.
04:23 I think Lane's very interesting, Joe,
04:25 because he was there for a couple of years.
04:28 He knows what Nick built there.
04:31 He understands what Nick built there.
04:33 I think that Sark's not in it,
04:36 'cause Sark can get whatever he wants at Texas.
04:39 Lane can't get whatever he wants at Ole Miss.
04:41 He's complained about it already,
04:42 about how these other teams can spend more than us at NIL.
04:45 I think that's a very interesting one, Joe, to look at.
04:48 But whatever happens, it's just gonna cause the dominoes.
04:50 Whoever takes that job, their job's gonna open,
04:52 then that job's gonna open.
04:54 You're about to have a real landslide, potentially,
04:57 of a lot of jobs opening up in college football,
05:00 depending on who takes that job.
05:02 - They put a number on it, I'm taking a shot on Kiffin.
05:04 Give me plus money with Kiffin, I'm taking a shot.
05:07 He coaches up offense, that's what you need in today's.
05:10 - I think that would be my pick too, Joe.
05:12 I think that would be my pick as well, that's for sure.
05:16 (upbeat music)
05:19 you
