00:30 The Sound Off Badge - Super Mario Bros. Wonder
00:33 [Gameplay]
00:38 Super Mario Bros. Wonder follows similar footsteps to its predecessors,
00:41 including an ultra-hard final level that brutalizes even the most skilled players.
00:46 But before you can get to it, and therefore earn the game's secret badge,
00:50 you've gotta put in the work. Players need to find every Wonder Seed, every Flower Coin,
00:55 and reach the top of the goalpost for every level.
00:58 Then you have to do the same for all levels in the Special World. No small feat.
01:02 You then have to conquer the last stage, the Final Final Test Badge Marathon,
01:07 one of the most difficult challenges in any Mario game.
01:11 Your effort earns you the Sound Off Badge, which turns all sound effects into acapella noises.
01:16 [Gameplay]
01:20 The Sword of Kings - Earthbound
01:22 [Gameplay]
01:26 When it comes to tough unlockables, the RPG genre has you covered. Earthbound,
01:30 one of the most famous in Nintendo's catalog, is a prime example. The game features the Sword of
01:36 Kings, an item that gives a significant damage boost to Ness' ally, Pooh. You can only unlock
01:41 it by fighting Starman Supers, enemies that only appear in the Stonehenge base. Unfortunately,
01:47 you have to fight quite a lot of them. The Sword only has a 1 in 128 chance of appearing,
01:54 less than a single percent. Jeff, another ally, has an ability to see and steal items enemies
02:00 may be carrying, which does alleviate some of the stress. But there's no guarantee
02:05 that will help with the grind.
02:06 [Gameplay]
02:11 Golden Gun - GoldenEye 007
02:13 [Gameplay]
02:19 The N64's groundbreaking FPS is still fondly remembered for its multiplayer. But the
02:24 single-player campaign could actually get a little tough, especially when playing on the
02:28 highest difficulty, 00Agent. This adds more objectives and enemies to every level, while
02:34 also limiting your resources and having you take more damage. By beating every other level this
02:39 way, the secret Egyptian level would be unlocked, as well as the chance to gain the overpowered
02:44 Golden Gun. In a certain room, you'd have to walk across floor tiles in a specific order to
02:50 nab it at the end. This would unlock the weapon in multiplayer, allowing whoever got it the
02:54 chance to one-shot everyone else.
02:56 [Gameplay]
03:01 Zero Suit Samus Artwork - Metroid Dread
03:04 [Gameplay]
03:09 It's no secret that Metroid Dread is a hard game on its own. But unlocking all the artwork
03:14 in its galleries takes the patience of a saint. Players can get certain pieces of art after
03:18 collecting 100% of the items and upgrades for each of its eight areas. That certainly
03:24 takes quite a bit of time. However, other pieces representing Samus' past adventures
03:28 are only unlocked after beating the game on a specific difficulty and within certain time
03:33 requirements. There are six in total, with the most challenging being unlocked after
03:37 beating the game on hard mode in under four hours. Only after gaining all of them will
03:42 you get the final piece of Samus in her Zero Suit.
03:45 [Gameplay]
03:50 The Super Suit - Super Mario RPG - Legend of the Seven Stars
03:54 [Gameplay]
03:58 One of the more unique elements in Mario's first RPG were action commands during battle.
04:03 Pressing the right button at the right moment could have you deal more damage, or take less
04:07 from an enemy. One of Mario's signature attacks was the super jump. By pressing the
04:11 attack button right when Mario landed on an enemy's head, he'd continue to jump until
04:15 you missed. However, in Monstro Town, there's an NPC that challenges you to making 100
04:21 consecutive jumps. Your timing obviously has to be sublime, and messing up can be downright
04:27 disheartening. The Super Suit you earn is definitely worth it, as it gives major boosts
04:31 to Mario's stats and protects against status effects.
04:35 [Gameplay]
04:40 Playing on Foot - Star Fox 64
04:43 [Gameplay]
04:47 In Star Fox 64's Versus Mode, players could face off against friends in Arwings,
04:52 Tanks, or on Foot. But that last one took a lot of effort to unlock. You'd first have to
04:58 unlock Expert Mode by earning a medal on every level in the campaign. Each stage has different
05:03 numbers of enemies you need to defeat to earn its medal, but you also have to ensure all three
05:07 of your companions are still flying alongside you by the end. After earning that highest of
05:12 difficulty settings, selecting it and earning another medal on Venom, one of the more difficult
05:17 levels, would get you this secret multiplayer feature.
05:20 [Gameplay]
05:25 The Bomber's Ring - The Legend of Zelda - Oracle of Ages
05:29 [Gameplay]
05:37 The Zelda series has many unlockables that require a lot of work. Most of them are hard due to how
05:42 much time they take, but when it comes to purely testing your skill and your ability to keep calm,
05:47 the Bomber's Ring from Oracle of Ages is tough to top. The only way to get it is by playing one of
05:52 the most notoriously frustrating minigames in the series, a rhythm game where Link follows a Goron's
05:58 dance instructions. You must play on Platinum difficulty and must perfectly match the moves
06:03 across eight sequences, all of which are quite long. Even still, your prize is a random ring you
06:09 must get appraised, meaning there's no guarantee you'll get the Bomber's Ring even if you do win.
06:14 [Gameplay]
06:19 Mii Outfit B - Mario Kart Wii
06:22 [Gameplay]
06:26 Unlocking characters in Mario Kart isn't usually that big of a hassle. Most players can unlock them
06:31 simply by racing. In the Wii installment, it wasn't a character that gave us grief, but a
06:36 costume for our Miis to race in. There were a couple of ways to earn the Mii Outfit B, which
06:41 dressed male Miis like one of the plumbers and female Miis like one of the princesses. You could
06:46 play a combined 5,100 races and battles or win 5,000 online matches, both major time commitments.
06:55 Or you could unlock all expert staff ghosts across the 32 tracks, only done so by beating each of the
07:01 regular ones. While this final method theoretically took less time, that didn't make it easy.
07:06 [Gameplay]
07:13 Ho-Oh - Pokemon Colosseum
07:16 [Gameplay]
07:21 There are certain Pokemon that are a pain to catch across the mainline games, but the level of
07:26 commitment it takes to unlock the legendary Ho-Oh in the GameCube spin-off Colosseum is honestly
07:32 ridiculous. The game revolves around snagging shadow Pokemon, those that have been corrupted
07:37 and which you must purify. In addition to beating the game, players must purify all 48 possible
07:43 shadow Pokemon. Afterwards, you'll head to the aptly named Mount Battle, where you must take a
07:48 team of six, without changing any of them, through 100 increasingly tougher battles.
07:53 Only after all that grinding will Ho-Oh appear in your PC.
07:57 [Gameplay]
08:02 Xavier - Fire Emblem Thracia 776
08:05 [Gameplay]
08:11 The Fire Emblem franchise is full of characters with obscure methods for unlocking,
08:16 though Xavier is the king of them all. Appearing in Thracia 776, already considered one of,
08:22 if not the most difficult game in the series, the General is possible to recruit in Chapter 18.
08:27 He and several of his men have had loved ones kidnapped by the villain, and so you must free
08:32 those civilians first. But you also have to take those civilians with you into battle and have them
08:37 speak with the specific knight they're related to. Of course, there are also regular enemies that can
08:43 easily kill them and ruin the whole process. The knights that turn good can accidentally kill their
08:47 former allies, also ruining the process. Oh, and the only party member that can recruit Xavier
08:54 is Leaf. With so many ways for it to go wrong, the whole thing is a lesson in frustration.
