Chicago hasn't experienced high temperatures this low since 2019.

00:00 Chicago was one of the coldest places in America this week, as high temperatures
00:05 hovered around or below zero the first half of the week. "Just make sure you got
00:10 some layers and then yeah you can't have enough layers. You always wear an extra
00:15 one." Some of the bravest souls like these Chicagoans bundled up and embraced the
00:20 cold weather. "Scarves, two sets of gloves, what else did you guys put on? Two jackets."
00:26 It was so cold Lake Michigan and the Chicago River were producing steam. The
00:32 frigid temperatures kept most people indoors during the MLK holiday. It also
00:37 prompted Chicago public schools to cancel classes on Tuesday. City officials
00:42 activated additional warming centers and visited encampments to connect people to
00:47 shelters. "Please remember it is not illegal to be homeless or to live on the
00:51 street and DFSS cannot force anyone to take shelter." The last time Chicago saw
00:57 temperatures this low was in 2019. With temperatures not expected to go above
01:02 freezing until next week, people like David Valles are limiting their time
01:06 outdoors. "Man it's freezing man just stay home if you can if you don't have to
01:10 come out don't come out at all." Reporting in Chicago for AccuWeather, I'm Emmy Victor.
