00:00 This story is wild and will put businesses on high alert.
00:03 ExcelJet, an acclaimed hub for Microsoft Excel tips, was targeted in an AI SEO heist.
00:10 Content strategist Jake Ward admitted stealing 3.6 million visitors from his competitor
00:17 by using AI writer ByWord, which replicated ExcelJet's best content
00:22 upon feeding 1,800 URLs into it and diverting millions of website visitors.
00:29 ExcelJet's owner David Bruns began noticing a huge drop in traffic last year.
00:34 This has huge implications for businesses that rely on Google's organic traffic for
00:40 revenue.
00:41 Raising three questions.
00:42 Is it ethical?
00:43 Legal?
00:44 And are businesses adequately prepared for what comes next?
00:48 Before you get excited, run off and repeat what Jake Ward has done, here are three things
00:53 you need to know urgently.
00:55 The third is the most important.
00:56 I've got a free chapter from my new book, The Wolf is at the Door, how to survive and
01:01 thrive in an AI driven world for you below to help prepare you for 2024.
01:06 But first, expect more of these AI SEO heists to occur.
01:11 You may find your own website a target of an SEO heist.
01:15 While there's little that you can do to protect yourself right now, especially if someone
01:20 replicates your best content then has AI rewrite it to avoid plagiarism, I expect that in the
01:26 coming year, we'll start to see sites like Wix alert users to when their website is being
01:33 scraped and by whom.
01:34 Second, it's time to ramp up your digital marketing campaigns.
01:39 We'll be flooded with AI generated content in the coming year, which means to stand out,
01:45 you'll need to rely heavily on branding and storytelling that resonates with your audience.
01:51 Much of the new content being produced by generative AI is generic because people don't
01:56 know how to prompt it for the best results.
01:59 To break through, you'll have to tap in to the emotional aspect of your brand story that
02:05 resonates with your audience and sets you apart.
02:08 I cover this in detail in my new book.
02:11 Third, don't get caught out yourself.
02:14 The New York Times has sued OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement over unauthorized
02:20 use of its published work to train AI technologies.
02:23 The lawsuit alleges that the companies use millions of Times articles to train automated
02:29 chatbots that are now competitors.
02:32 The Times is demanding billions in statutory and actual damages and wants chatbot models
02:38 using its copyrighted material destroyed.
02:41 When using AI, run your final content through plagiarism checkers to ensure you're not inadvertently
02:49 producing copyrighted material that could land you in hot water.
02:53 And you must also alert employees as well because they could inadvertently put you at
02:58 risk too.
02:59 This is going to be a hot topic of conversation as marketers flock to new AI tools promising
03:05 to produce assets fast.
03:07 Now, is an AI search engine optimization heist ethical and legal?
03:13 The New York Times lawsuit is a landmark event because they came with detailed receipts that
03:18 other court cases over generative AI haven't had.
03:22 Are businesses adequately prepared?
03:24 Absolutely not.
03:26 Right now, they're blinded by the promise that is AI and its ability to cut costs.
03:31 That's why I wrote The Wolf is at the Door.
