00:02 - 1984, my best possible crash.
00:05 (dramatic music)
00:08 With three days to go to the finish,
00:13 I was 11th, which was my worst ranking on the Dakar.
00:16 So I didn't care, I just wanted to finish.
00:18 I was at one place off.
00:21 I was a bit tired, and I caught the 10th place rider
00:23 in a straight, whose name was Piedet.
00:25 And there must have been a big hole on the right
00:28 because he passed on the left.
00:30 And I saw two cameras, which meant there was
00:34 something interesting, something dangerous.
00:36 I was tired, I was just doing a trying shot.
00:39 And there was a huge hole.
00:41 One, I didn't see it, I went up in the air,
00:43 my bum thrown up in the air,
00:45 and two, I had a very good reflex,
00:47 I pushed my arms to get off the bike and turned,
00:50 protecting myself like that.
00:51 And I remember the bike very well.
00:53 I was wondering, am I gonna get hit by it?
00:57 I didn't get hit, and when I turned like that,
00:59 I bounced back well, so I stayed compact,
01:01 and then knockout.
01:02 (speaking in foreign language)
01:11 The next shot, I'm not on the track,
01:17 I don't know who pulled me there.
01:19 And came from the forest, a superb lady.
01:23 She was an Austrian singer and actress
01:25 who had come to shoot a classic film, a bit dorky,
01:28 in which the guy was competing in the Dakar,
01:30 and his fiance was coming to join him,
01:33 and he had an accident.
01:34 They'd arrived a few days before,
01:37 and paid a great stuntman who'd crashed four or five times,
01:41 and who was, what you call, punch drunk in English,
01:44 who'd taken too many knocks.
01:47 So they said, we're going to wait for one
01:50 of the riders to crash, and it was me.
01:54 I'm stupid, I was sleeping.
01:55 I carried on slowly, I don't remember anything,
02:01 I just remember that I finished.
02:03 I don't know how long it took, but I finished,
02:07 and there was such gaps that I kept my position.
