Michael Carbajal competed in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, and, somewhat controversially, was beaten in the final. Carbajal turned pro in 1989, beating Will Grigsby on points (Grigsby would go on to win the IBF superflyweight title twice). Carbajal won the IBF light flyweight title in 1990 in his 15th bout when he stopped Muangchai Kittikasem in the seventh round. Carbajal made six defences of his title, and also won six non-title bouts before this unification decider.

Humberto Gonzalez turned pro in 1984. At just 5'1" tall, he was four inches shorter than Carbajal, and with a shorter reach. Gonzalez won the WBC light flyweight title in his 25th bout when he outpointed Yul-woo Lee in South Korea in 1989. The following year, he lost his title in his sixth defence when he was knocked out in the sixth round by Rolando Pascua. Six months later, Gonzalez regained his title when he outpointed Melchor Cob Castro. Gonzalez defended his crown four times, the most recent of which was a points win in a rematch with Castro.
