00:02 - Hello and welcome back to Not Everyone's a Film Critic,
00:05 a vodcast or a podcast brought to yourself by The Scotsman.
00:09 I'm your host as always, Graham Falk.
00:10 I have a moth of toffee in my mouth.
00:13 So if I sound like I'm a little bit, I am.
00:16 And I'm also joined by David Hepburn
00:17 who has zero moth of toffee in his mouth,
00:21 as far as I'm aware.
00:22 How are you?
00:22 - You don't know that, but you're right, I do.
00:24 I'm doing very well.
00:25 Good afternoon to you.
00:26 - Oscars day.
00:27 - Yeah.
00:28 - So, excited?
00:32 - Yeah, it's quite exciting.
00:33 I watched the live streaming thing,
00:35 which I don't think I've ever done that before.
00:37 I thought it would take ages,
00:38 but it actually didn't take that long.
00:40 I wasn't terribly sure who the people were presenting,
00:42 actually, when they looked that up.
00:44 - No, I went to the Champions League draw
00:47 in Monaco in September.
00:50 And like the draw itself was really fast.
00:52 But the bit beforehand we had like a jazz version
00:58 of the Champions League theme tune.
00:59 - Yeah.
01:00 - You kind of, what?
01:01 You sort of forgot that football was a thing for a bit.
01:04 - You see, I thought that when they did the shortlist
01:05 it would be a wee bit more razzmatazz.
01:07 It was weird as well,
01:07 'cause there was a live audience there,
01:11 which seems really weird to turn up
01:12 to such a kind of short, nondescript thing.
01:14 I thought there might be someone singing,
01:16 there might be some videos or something,
01:17 but absolutely nothing.
01:18 It was just two relatively unknown actors.
01:22 Dennis Quaid's son was one of them.
01:24 And the other one was an actress from "Joker",
01:26 I understand.
01:27 They're not particularly well-known faces
01:29 reading out a list,
01:29 but there was about like 500 people there watching them.
01:32 I would not have gone to that.
01:33 - By the way, I can't believe you described Jack Quaid
01:35 as Dennis Quaid's son.
01:37 He was the killer in "Scream 6".
01:39 No, "Scream 5".
01:40 - That's how old I am,
01:41 that I am very much part of Dennis Quaid's era,
01:44 not Jack Quaid.
01:46 - I'm part of both,
01:47 and I still know he was the killer in "Scream".
01:50 But I think the short version of this
01:54 is maybe outside of one or two things.
01:56 But if you haven't noticed,
01:58 do you wanna do film reviews today?
02:00 Or should we just go straight to the Oscars?
02:01 - No, we'll just go through the Oscars.
02:02 We'll do film reviews.
02:02 - That's fine.
02:03 "Poor Things" is great.
02:04 "The Holdover" is great.
02:05 Go see it.
02:06 - Yeah.
02:07 - There you go, reviews done.
02:08 (blows raspberry)
02:09 But not too,
02:10 I mean, we'll go in depth on the actual main awards,
02:14 but I think my overriding feeling
02:16 is outside of maybe one or two things,
02:18 zero surprises for what came up.
02:21 - Yeah, I think maybe less surprises than any Oscars.
02:25 I can remember, I tend to look at the variety,
02:27 do predictions,
02:28 and they change the predictions throughout the year.
02:30 A variety got, I mean, almost all of them right.
02:33 So all of the best picture, they got right.
02:35 And I think in the rest of the "Cat and the Screeze",
02:37 I think they got four out of five,
02:39 or five out of five right in all of them.
02:42 So I don't think there were very many surprises.
02:43 You usually get one really weird acting performance
02:46 that comes in late in the day,
02:48 and it's quite exciting.
02:49 And that really hasn't happened here.
02:50 A couple, and we'll get onto the acting nominees,
02:53 but there's nothing that's come completely left of heels.
02:55 There's a couple of people who've missed out
02:57 that we'd have expected to be in there,
02:58 which again, we'll come onto.
03:00 Some of those I'm happy with, some of them not so happy.
03:03 But I suppose we were just talking about it
03:05 before the podcast that "Saltburn",
03:07 you would have thought that might've got something,
03:09 and that got completely blanked by the Oscars.
03:11 There's nothing there at all.
03:12 "May/December", I thought might've done a bit better
03:14 in the Oscars.
03:15 That's up for original screenplay, but that's all.
03:18 All of the "Strangers" did quite well in the BAFTAs,
03:20 and got a couple of nods in the Golden Globes as well.
03:23 That got nothing at all.
03:24 You'd have expected that might've got a wee acting award,
03:27 or rather nomination, because they love a British actor,
03:30 and that's a British film with a couple
03:31 of really good British performances in it.
03:32 And "Passages", I thought might be an outside chance
03:34 for getting one or two nominees.
03:35 But all of those being blank,
03:37 so it's all of the films we thought were going
03:39 to be involved, are involved,
03:40 to a lesser or greater degree.
03:43 I think certainly "Slight Surprises",
03:45 "American Fiction" has done maybe a bit better
03:47 than people thought.
03:49 That isn't out in the UK yet.
03:50 That's coming out on the 2nd of February,
03:52 so people will get to see that,
03:53 along with "Zone of Interest".
03:55 But that seems to be the one that's maybe done
03:56 a little bit better than expected.
03:58 Maybe "Barbie" has done a little bit worse than expected.
04:00 But other than that, it's kind of what people thought.
04:02 - Yeah, I was surprised at nothing for,
04:05 I haven't seen all the "Strangers" as yet.
04:07 I don't know whether it's out in the UK officially yet.
04:10 - No, I think that might be the same date, actually.
04:12 I think that might be February 2nd as well.
04:13 It's certainly the beginning of February.
04:14 I think people will love it.
04:15 I mean, it's a great, great British film,
04:18 but completely utterly overlooked by the Oscars,
04:21 which is a shame.
04:22 - Yeah, I was quite surprised that Andrew Scott
04:24 didn't get it.
04:25 I mean, in terms of the odds,
04:28 sort of the ones to be expected were,
04:31 like, you've got nominations that would top the odds,
04:36 odds on favorites list via Sky Bet and whatnot.
04:39 But I think DiCaprio,
04:42 I know you've got thoughts and feelings on it,
04:44 but he was, I think, sixth or something.
04:47 So maybe surprised that he didn't,
04:48 but maybe the thought, well, he's got enough.
04:50 Like, he's in every blooming year.
04:52 There's somebody who doesn't need them.
04:53 But after that, you had, like, Scott within there.
04:56 And I thought he would've-
04:57 - Yeah.
04:57 - I thought he was in.
04:59 - I thought he was a shoo-in, actually.
05:00 And I'm quite surprised Paul Meskell,
05:02 who's also in all of us, "Strangers,"
05:05 who's equally good,
05:05 and I think that he was in for the best supporting role.
05:08 I can't remember.
05:09 They both have equal roles,
05:10 but you put yourself in for lead role and supporting role.
05:12 And obviously, Paul Meskell got an Oscar nomination
05:14 last year, somewhat surprisingly.
05:17 I know they do tend to go back to same actors and actresses,
05:20 and I was quite surprised he didn't get another nomination
05:22 because, yeah, they do like people that we've seen before
05:25 and they've nominated before.
05:26 But he will win an Oscar, Paul Meskell.
05:28 I mean, hopefully, Andrew Scott as well.
05:29 I think they will both be nominated in years to come.
05:32 And I'm sure Paul Meskell will end up winning
05:34 several Oscars under Fox.
05:35 He's a terrific actor.
05:37 - Yeah, yeah, I think so as well.
05:38 I think one big thing that's missing
05:40 is there's normally always, like, one actor or an actress
05:43 or someone somewhere that hasn't won an Oscar before,
05:47 but has been nominated, like, a trillion times.
05:48 Like, do you remember "The Capra" where everyone's like,
05:50 "Oh, surely he gets the Oscar this year."
05:53 And they give him it for, like,
05:53 one of his least best films.
05:55 And it was like, "Oh, okay."
05:57 But we'll go into the Oscars themselves.
06:00 We'll go through, sort of, film by film,
06:02 give our suggestions of what we think's gonna win
06:05 and what we'd like to win.
06:06 Should we start with a big one?
06:07 Should we start with Best Picture?
06:09 Should we just go- - Yeah, why not?
06:10 Why not? That's the biggest category, yeah.
06:11 - We're not one of those, like-
06:13 - We're not gonna build up to it.
06:14 We're not gonna build up to that.
06:16 So we're gonna end with the least important one.
06:18 - Yeah, we start well and then we get rocky.
06:20 Like, that's pretty much how we've always been.
06:22 So why change it now?
06:23 So for people who don't know,
06:26 or people who are just watching this to get the news,
06:28 which would be a shock, but here we are.
06:30 Best Picture nominees in alphabetical order
06:34 are "American Fiction," "Anatomy of a Fall,"
06:37 "Barbie," "The Holdovers," "Killers of the Flower Moon,"
06:39 "Maestro," "Oppenheimer," "Past Lives,"
06:42 "Poor Things," and "The Zone of Interest."
06:44 Now, I've seen most of those,
06:48 but obviously the ones that aren't out yet,
06:49 I haven't seen.
06:51 First and foremost, what do you think's gonna win?
06:53 - I think "Oppenheimer" is gonna win.
06:56 I think it's an unstoppable four-sniper Best Picture.
06:58 Not necessarily for Best Direction, we'll get onto that,
07:00 but I just can't see anything beating it.
07:03 It just seems sort of critical mass.
07:04 You know how films get that way during the Oscars season,
07:07 and it's picking up all of the awards.
07:10 I don't agree it's the best film of the year.
07:11 I know you do, and I know plenty of people
07:13 I massively respect and like do enjoy it.
07:16 So I do get the feeling it's maybe slightly down to me
07:18 that I just find the first half less good
07:20 than the second half.
07:21 But I think "Oppenheimer" is gonna win.
07:23 I would like to see "Past Lives" win.
07:25 Wish I could go on banging on about.
07:26 "Past Lives" performed disappointingly.
07:28 It's not really up for very much.
07:30 It's up for Best Original Screenplay.
07:32 It didn't get a Best Actress nod,
07:34 which it might have done, but it didn't.
07:36 So "Past Lives" seems to have peaked a wee bit too early.
07:38 It was kind of one of the favorites about six months ago,
07:40 and now it's kind of an all-suran.
07:42 I think the one film that could compete
07:46 with "Oppenheimer" is, funnily enough, "Poor Things,"
07:49 'cause it's one of these things that, again,
07:50 it's got momentum.
07:51 So it's now second favorite, "Poor Things."
07:53 It was fifth or sixth favorite a few months back.
07:56 "Oppenheimer" has always been there,
07:58 but "Poor Things" is kind of coming up the inside rail.
08:01 And if it had been another month before the Oscars,
08:03 I think it might have just about been enough to tip it over.
08:05 'Cause again, not so many people
08:07 have seen "Poor Things" yet.
08:08 Just come out in the UK.
08:09 So I think there's a wee chance for "Poor Things."
08:13 I would like "Poor Things" to win,
08:14 where it's to be between those two films,
08:17 but I can't see "Pass On."
08:18 - I think this is where the surprises
08:21 are gonna come in for the Oscar.
08:22 - Ooh!
08:23 "Poor Things"?
08:25 - No.
08:26 I think the holdovers might sneak it.
08:29 - Yeah, you can almost see that happening,
08:32 because it's so different from all the other films,
08:34 isn't it?
08:34 It's kind of, it's a nice old-fashioned feel-good film.
08:37 We're in such terrible times right now.
08:39 Things are getting worse.
08:40 Do we really want to be celebrating
08:43 a really depressing film about nuclear war right now?
08:46 Is this the time for that to be celebrated?
08:48 I kind of see what you mean.
08:49 We want an old-school, nice American comedy.
08:53 I get that.
08:54 I do get that.
08:56 - I think it might, I don't know why.
08:58 I just have a feeling there will be a surprise somewhere,
09:00 because there's been no real surprise nominations.
09:04 And I just get the feeling,
09:06 I don't think it's better than "Oppenheimer" myself.
09:08 I like both films.
09:10 Personally, I would, of those films that are there,
09:12 I can't go back on what I've said previously.
09:14 "Oppenheimer" was my favorite film of last year.
09:16 I thought it was really good,
09:18 which kind of pains me a bit,
09:19 'cause I feel like it's like the man
09:21 who doesn't go to the cinema that often's choice.
09:23 But I'm not gonna lie and try and make myself sound cooler
09:27 by saying I think there's better than that.
09:28 I think that was the best,
09:30 much maybe only by "Saltburn,"
09:31 which doesn't even have a nomination,
09:32 and the films I haven't seen.
09:33 I can't really comment on American fiction
09:36 and stuff like that.
09:37 But I'm gonna say the holdovers might nick it.
09:42 And who do I want to win it?
09:45 I don't know.
09:46 I'm kind of open with it.
09:46 I don't think "Oppenheimer" is gonna struggle
09:48 if they don't win it for Oscars on the night.
09:50 So I'm not gonna say, "Oh, I want them to win it."
09:53 I'm kind of easy-ozy with whoever wins it.
09:55 But if you're talking about what my favorite film was
09:59 of that 10, "Oppenheimer," by quite a long shot
10:04 outside of that,
10:05 poor things would probably be up there,
10:11 but I'd put "Saltburn" ahead of that as well
10:13 with still below "Oppenheimer."
10:14 It's not even nominated.
10:16 Who won last year?
10:17 Who won it last year again?
10:20 - Well, you can't be asking me things
10:22 that I should have looked up on Google.
10:23 - No! - You have to tell me
10:25 these things, I can't.
10:26 - No, I'm trying to remember who won it.
10:28 Was it "The Whale"?
10:29 - No, it was--
10:31 - I'm gonna Google this.
10:33 I'm Googling this.
10:34 Best picture of 2023 was, oh, of course, of course it was.
10:38 It was everything, everywhere, all at once.
10:39 Of course it was. - It was, absolutely, yeah.
10:41 That seems like longer ago than a year ago, though,
10:43 doesn't it?
10:44 - I know, it feels more like 2022,
10:45 which I think it might have been, but later.
10:47 - Yeah, it was, it seems it was early on in the process.
10:50 You're absolutely right.
10:50 So it was released almost a year earlier,
10:52 which is why it seems like no older winner.
10:55 - Next, we'll go on to best actress,
10:58 which, again, I think has got a really obvious winner,
11:01 but maybe not.
11:03 For people who didn't know what was in it,
11:05 I think in "Alphabet of Glory,"
11:06 we've got Annette Bening for "Nyad,"
11:09 Lily Gladstone for "Colors of the Flower Moon,"
11:11 Sandra Hula, Hula, Hula?
11:13 - Yeah.
11:14 - I think it's Hula, yeah, for "Not Me Before,"
11:17 Kari Morgan for "Maestro,"
11:19 and Emma Stone for "Poor Things."
11:21 Who do you want to win it?
11:23 Who do you think should win it?
11:25 No, who do you want to win it and think should win it,
11:27 and who do you think will win it?
11:29 - That's basically a forward decrease.
11:32 I don't know.
11:33 I think this is ikies.
11:35 I think this is ikies between two people.
11:37 So basically, the bookies have always had Lily Gladstone,
11:40 and she's won everything for "Colors of the Flower Moon."
11:42 I think Emma Stone's gonna win it.
11:44 She is almost equal favorite with her now with the bookies,
11:48 and there's still quite a long time to go to the ceremony,
11:52 and I think "Poor Things" is gonna get more momentum,
11:54 a bit like I said, for best picture,
11:56 and I think that Emma Stone's gonna end up winning it.
11:58 If I was my pick out of all of them,
12:00 I think I would probably go for Sandra Hula,
12:05 and I think she could still nick it
12:07 for the reason that she's been in
12:09 two of the big films this year.
12:10 So she's been nominated for this for "Anatomy of the Fall,"
12:14 but she missed out on best supporting actress
12:16 for "Zone of Interest,"
12:17 so she's been in two of the really big films.
12:20 Her vote could have been kind of split a wee bit
12:22 for being in two different awards categories.
12:24 I think it suits her only being in one.
12:26 So you never know. She might come out.
12:27 This could be a surprise category, I think,
12:29 but I'm gonna say Emma Stone.
12:33 - For me, there's not a great deal of competition in this
12:37 for who I want to win and who I think will win.
12:40 I think first and foremost, I agree with you.
12:43 I think Emma Stone will win it.
12:45 I think she will get ahead of Lily Gladstone.
12:48 I don't think that's that surprising,
12:49 but maybe surprising from the perspective of
12:52 Lily Gladstone has been the favorite for a long time.
12:55 Thought it was a really good performance
12:56 from Lily Gladstone.
12:57 I really liked "Killers of the Flower Moon."
12:59 I know you didn't,
13:01 but I don't feel it even touched the sides
13:04 of Emma Stone's career high outside of "Superbad,"
13:07 'cause of course she's the best in "Superbad."
13:09 That's the best thing she's been in.
13:10 - How did she not get an Oscar for that?
13:11 I just don't understand it.
13:13 - I mean, come on.
13:14 I would like Emma Stone to win it
13:18 for the same reasons I've just stated.
13:19 I think the performance,
13:21 I mean, if you haven't seen "Poor Things,"
13:23 we'll try not to spoil it too much,
13:24 but the kind of long story short is a lot of people will go,
13:28 "Oh, there's a lot of sex
13:29 "and a lot of sex scenes with Emma Stone in it."
13:31 There is, there's about four hours worth of Emma Stone
13:34 having sex in the movie,
13:36 and yet all of it has complete context.
13:39 And that's based on the strength of, I think,
13:43 Emma Stone and her performance.
13:45 The sort of grotty, sexy scenes
13:50 that are a bit uncomfortable to watch
13:52 all have purpose behind it,
13:54 whilst also she's like completely whimsical
13:57 and almost like "Wizard of Ozzy" at points.
14:00 Which I think is all on the strength of her own performance,
14:02 and I think she's done really, really well on it.
14:04 And I think a lot of people pointed to
14:07 Jennifer Lawrence's performance in "Mother"
14:09 as like, "Oh, look what she can do."
14:11 I think Emma Stone's like poo-pooed all over that
14:13 in "Poor Things" and done really, really well.
14:17 So I think she'll win it,
14:19 and I think she should win it.
14:20 So for me, best actress is far and wide, 100% Emma Stone.
14:25 And I think she will win it as well.
14:28 So best actors next up, again, not too many surprises.
14:32 Bradley Cooper, Maestro, Coleman Domingo in "Roosting,"
14:37 Paul Giamatti in "The Holdovers,"
14:39 Cillian Murphy in "Oppenheimer,"
14:41 and Jeffrey Wright in "American Fiction."
14:42 I can't comment on Jeffrey Wright's performance.
14:45 I can comment on most of the rest.
14:46 Actually, no, not Coleman Domingo, I can't.
14:48 So Giamatti, Cillian Murphy, and Bradley Cooper.
14:51 I think that it should be won by Cillian Murphy.
14:59 I think it will be won by Cillian Murphy.
15:01 Kinda to go back on what I said before
15:05 about "Oppenheimer" being, in my opinion,
15:08 the best film of the last 12 months,
15:09 so the best film I put on that list,
15:12 I think a lot of that film and its sort of excellence,
15:15 if you prefer cinematic excellence,
15:17 to sound a little bit as twee as Dave normally does, weird,
15:20 is based on his performance.
15:24 I think he's a superb actor.
15:25 I think a lot of people kinda look at him for
15:28 that bloomin' TV show, "Peaky Blinders."
15:32 It's the one thing I've never really watched
15:34 Cillian Murphy in.
15:35 I've seen him in loads of other stuff.
15:36 28 days later, I think it was one of the first times
15:38 I came across him.
15:40 I think he's an unbelievably good actor.
15:42 I cannot think of any bad performances
15:44 or even remotely bad performances he's had,
15:46 but his performance in this,
15:48 I forgot it was Cillian Murphy for a minute
15:50 and seen him as Robert J. Oppenheimer,
15:52 and I think essentially that's the real basics of acting.
15:56 I think he was brilliant in it,
15:58 and I think 'cause he hasn't had an Oscar yet,
16:01 to my knowledge, he'll be due one,
16:03 and it's obviously a big one,
16:05 and I think it's deserving of it.
16:07 But I do think Giamatti deserves a big shout.
16:10 I feel a bit sorry for Bradley Cooper
16:13 because he's always doing really good performances.
16:15 He's more consistent than people give him any credit for.
16:19 He can do comedy, he can do heartfelt romance,
16:22 he can do action, he can now do biopics,
16:25 and he can direct and he can produce.
16:28 He's been in so much stuff.
16:30 Jennifer Lawrence before,
16:33 I thought he was absolutely incredible
16:35 in Silver Lining's playbook about 10 years ago.
16:38 Incredible in that film,
16:39 and I think a lot of people see Bradley Cooper
16:41 as the sexy, loud-mouthed guy from The Hangover,
16:44 and Bradley Cooper's so much better than that,
16:45 and he's proven it again,
16:47 but I think he'll be nicked by Cillian Murphy.
16:49 But Bradley Cooper's got Oscars
16:50 that are gonna come to him for Best Actor and stuff
16:52 in the future.
16:53 He can't not, he's too good of an actor to suffer that fate.
16:57 - Well, I'm gonna disagree with you.
16:58 I think they're gonna give it to Bradley Cooper.
17:00 I think that, I mean, certainly,
17:02 and there's no doubt Cillian Murphy,
17:03 Cillian Murphy's absolute favorite, no doubt.
17:05 I always call him Cillian Murphy, I don't know.
17:07 Like, I always used to call him Cillian Murphy.
17:09 I know it's Cillian,
17:09 but I spent like 10 years calling him Cillian Murphy,
17:12 and then people started saying his name.
17:14 No, I don't think everybody did.
17:15 - Because he doesn't have social media,
17:17 and he doesn't like, I mean, somebody asked him,
17:20 once, I think it was during the Oppenheimer stuff,
17:22 asked him what a meme was, and he was like, huh?
17:24 - Good for him, good for him.
17:25 - And if a man doesn't know what a meme is,
17:26 then you know he's not ever been on the internet for ages.
17:29 So he's not gonna come out in an interview and be like,
17:31 stop calling me Cillian.
17:32 He probably doesn't know.
17:33 - Well, I think, I mean,
17:35 I think probably Cillian Murphy does win it.
17:36 He's certainly the best thing about Oppenheimer.
17:38 Without him, Oppenheimer wouldn't be the film that it is.
17:40 There's no doubt about that.
17:41 But I think Bradley Cooper deserves it.
17:42 He should have been,
17:43 he should have won about four Oscars already.
17:45 He's always very unlucky.
17:47 He's been favorite before Bradley Cooper.
17:50 He was favorite until about a couple of months ago.
17:51 Now Cillian Murphy's overtaken him.
17:54 I think it's brilliant that Leonardo DiCaprio
17:56 hasn't been nominated for best actor.
17:57 That's the kind of snub that people are talking about.
17:59 I don't think it is a snub,
18:00 because I think he's the worst thing about "Flowers of,"
18:03 about "Killers of the Flower Moon."
18:04 Must stop calling it "Flowers of the Killer Moon."
18:06 I think he's the worst thing about a not very good film.
18:09 And I think the fact that it's up for best director,
18:12 best film, other acting awards,
18:14 best supporting actor, best actress,
18:16 but not best lead actor is very telling.
18:19 I think people kind of agree with me a bit more
18:23 than they let on about Leonardo DiCaprio.
18:24 It's not a great performance.
18:26 It's not a great performance.
18:27 - I like him, but I don't think it's one of his best.
18:29 I think Leo is the greatest actor of my generation.
18:32 - I completely agree.
18:33 - I don't think that's his best.
18:35 - He was miscast.
18:37 I don't know what he's doing in the role,
18:38 but he's doing something very strange.
18:39 I think it's a shame we're talking early
18:41 that Barry Keoghan didn't get nominated for "Saltburn,"
18:45 and personally, Andrew Scott for "All the Strangers."
18:47 But no, I'm going for Bradley Cooper,
18:49 and I might even put a small wager on Bradley Cooper
18:51 'cause it's all beginning to go out a bit.
18:53 I think he's gonna win that.
18:55 Although the thing is,
18:57 if you look at the screenplay nominations,
19:00 often they don't give someone the acting or directing one,
19:03 and then they give them the second prize,
19:06 and he is up for the best adapted screenplay.
19:10 So he might get it for that.
19:13 No, sorry, best original screenplay he's up for for "Maestro."
19:16 So they might give him that and not give him the best actor,
19:19 and that means at least he gets his Oscar.
19:21 So he'll hopefully get an Oscar from one or two other of them,
19:23 but they might just give him the best original screenplay
19:26 instead of best actor, or maybe two Oscars.
19:29 Maybe he'll get two Oscars this year.
19:31 - You know, I'm sitting here feeling sorry for Bradley Cooper.
19:34 - I don't feel too sorry for him.
19:35 - Yeah, I just Googled him to see
19:37 what Oscars he's received in the past
19:38 'cause I thought, "I'm sure he hasn't won an Oscar."
19:41 And as I Googled him, it came up that his age was 49.
19:43 Now I'm 37, I'm 38 this year,
19:46 and I look at Bradley Cooper and I think, "Bloomin' heck."
19:49 - Yes, he's a handsome man.
19:51 - Wow, like, come on.
19:53 And suddenly I don't feel sorry for him at all.
19:56 I'm just like, "You know what?
19:58 No, you don't deserve this."
20:00 - None of them deserve it.
20:03 None of them deserve it.
20:04 - He's been born with such handsome good looks.
20:07 I mean, you just need to look at his Wikipedia photo.
20:10 My God.
20:11 I mean, the man is...
20:13 But he's had 220 nominations across his career,
20:17 which is ridiculous.
20:18 He's only won 54, which is still pretty good.
20:21 - Yeah, none of those Oscars.
20:22 But those are minor awards.
20:24 Those are wee Film Festival awards and stuff.
20:26 I mean, he's won, I think he's won a BAFTA
20:28 or a Golden Globe or something.
20:29 But it is remarkable that he hasn't won an Oscar yet.
20:31 I mean, it is absolutely phenomenal,
20:33 considering he's been up for writing, directing,
20:35 producing, and acting.
20:38 I mean, four different things that he does
20:40 and gets nominated for.
20:41 He's not won one yet.
20:42 And all the people who are in his films always win
20:45 for his films.
20:46 He's won a lot of other people Oscars.
20:47 So maybe this year, I think they might just give him it
20:50 for a kind of body of work Oscar.
20:53 Like you were talking about, actually,
20:54 there is usually one person who's up there,
20:56 hasn't won an Oscar,
20:57 has been nominated lots and lots and lots.
20:59 Well, this year it is Bradley Cooper.
21:01 - He got his first nomination for Best Actor,
21:05 which was his first ever nomination
21:07 for Silver Lennon's playbook.
21:09 Supporting actor a year later in "American Hustle."
21:12 And then he got Best Picture and Best Actor
21:14 for "American Sniper."
21:16 - Yeah.
21:17 - I mean-
21:18 - Funny one.
21:19 - Yeah.
21:20 And then he got nominated in 2019 for Best Picture,
21:23 Best Actor, and Best Adapted Screenplay.
21:25 Didn't win any of them.
21:27 - How?
21:28 - Before he was born.
21:29 And then he got nominated for Best Picture for "Joker"
21:32 and also "Met Allie."
21:33 So twice.
21:34 - Yeah.
21:35 - And then-
21:36 - Give him an Oscar, for goodness sake,
21:38 just give him an Oscar.
21:40 - I think this time he's probably due one, to be fair.
21:42 He's also never won a Golden Globe
21:44 and received pretty much the same nominations.
21:47 - It's unbelievable.
21:48 I mean, he is the most unlucky actor ever.
21:52 He must be.
21:53 Who else is?
21:53 - He's got two Grammys.
21:55 - Ah, that's not right.
21:56 I've got a Grammy, Graham.
21:57 It's easy to win a Grammy.
21:58 There's loads of different categories.
22:00 - He's got a BAFTA as well.
22:01 But yeah, I mean,
22:05 he's got a Screen Actors Guild Award as well.
22:07 So there we go.
22:08 But he has been blessed with ridiculously handsome good looks.
22:12 So you know what?
22:14 Stick your award.
22:15 But no, I think he has been really unlucky
22:18 and I think he could get something.
22:20 We'll look at a couple of other big ones.
22:22 We'll look at,
22:24 let's go to supporting actor first.
22:28 - That's easy for you to say.
22:29 - Yeah, evidently not.
22:31 We've got a Best Supporting Actress.
22:34 We've got Emily Blunt for Oppenheimer,
22:35 Danielle Brooks for The Color Purple,
22:37 America Ferreira for Barbie,
22:39 Joni Foster for Nyad,
22:40 and Davine Joy Randolph for The Holdovers.
22:43 And I think the person I would like to win this
22:48 and also the person that will win this is the same.
22:51 I have not seen Nyad and of course The Color Purple,
22:57 I don't think is out yet here.
22:58 So to be fair, haven't seen those two regardless.
23:01 I do think Davine Joy Randolph will win for The Holdovers
23:05 and I think she should.
23:06 I think, you know, for what the role is,
23:09 the Best Supporting Actress within that list of people
23:13 and the ones that I've seen,
23:14 I would say she is the best 'cause I do,
23:16 I did like, I rated Oppenheimer very high
23:20 and I really liked Emily Blunt's performance.
23:22 And I know not everyone will agree with me on this,
23:24 but if I was to give a Best Supporting Actress
23:27 from Oppenheimer a nomination,
23:29 it would be, maybe I'm biased, but Florence Pugh.
23:32 - Yeah, she wasn't in as much of the role,
23:36 but I don't suppose that really makes a difference
23:39 when it's the supporting actress.
23:40 - No, exactly, like that's the thing she's supporting.
23:42 So for me, I was more taken by Florence Pugh in that film,
23:46 but I think Davine Joy Randolph was amazing
23:50 in The Holdovers, which I've seen over the weekend.
23:53 Maybe that's kind of a recency bias, I don't know,
23:55 but I'm sure she won Golden Globe for the same role.
24:00 - She did, yeah.
24:01 - And I don't see her not winning that.
24:04 I think she'll win it quite comfortably, to be honest.
24:07 I don't think America Ferreira should win for Barbie.
24:10 - Yeah, I actually find this slightly underwhelming,
24:14 this category this year.
24:16 I don't think they really picked the right actresses.
24:18 I mean, I think you're right that she will win,
24:21 Davine Joy Randolph for The Holdovers,
24:24 and she was, I think she probably is the best out of these.
24:27 It's weird to have America Ferreira for Barbie.
24:30 It was almost like they wanted to give
24:31 some other nominations for Barbie.
24:34 I mean, Margot Robbie should have been up for Best Actress.
24:36 It's almost like they said,
24:37 "Well, we're not able to give Margot her that,
24:40 "so we're gonna give one of the other cast members."
24:43 - Yeah, Margot Robbie should have been in there, 100%.
24:45 - Yeah, she should have definitely been in there.
24:47 She's very, very good.
24:48 And I find the rest, I think Emily Blunt was all right.
24:51 I think Julianne Moore for May/December
24:54 would have been a much better call.
24:56 I think Sandra Huller for Zone of Interest,
24:57 and I would have given it to Penelope Cruz for Ferrari
25:01 because she's absolutely extraordinary in Ferrari,
25:03 and she is exactly what you think of
25:05 when you think of a brilliant sporting actress,
25:07 as in she completely steals the entire film
25:09 from everybody else as she's been tasking it.
25:12 So I would have given it to Penelope Cruz,
25:14 but I think you're right, it'll go to Old Roberts.
25:16 - Do you not think Rosamund Pike
25:19 deserved a shout for that?
25:20 - Yeah.
25:23 - Hilarious.
25:24 - I mean, she is good.
25:25 She is hilarious.
25:26 She is good.
25:27 I mean, I actually think they could have chosen
25:29 five completely different actresses
25:31 and had a better shortlist.
25:32 And I don't think that's about any of the other shortlists.
25:34 I think all the other shortlists are pretty much okay,
25:36 but I think this one's a bit of a car crash,
25:38 to be honest with you.
25:39 - I think underneath Devine Joy Randolph,
25:41 it is a bit underwhelming.
25:43 I wasn't 100% sure it would have been my choices,
25:47 but I guess, again, film is very subjective,
25:50 and that's just our opinion.
25:51 Best supporting actor, there's only one for me.
25:55 And I think it's ironic that people could probably guess
26:00 who it is before they've even heard me speak.
26:03 They just need to look at me to think,
26:04 who would Graham pick as best supporting actor?
26:06 So let's not hide the surprise.
26:08 Ryan Gosling, 100% deserves to win the award for that
26:12 because he's, can I say, I'll say Blumen.
26:17 - Blumen, yes.
26:18 - Blumen brilliant in that.
26:19 - He is brilliant, he is, 100%.
26:21 - And he shouldn't have sold the show in that form.
26:23 He really shouldn't have sold the show.
26:24 There was so many amazing people in it,
26:26 fun performances, and that film for me
26:30 is all Ryan Gosling from the start.
26:32 I mean, the Sublime line still makes me laugh.
26:37 And his understanding and the whole character
26:40 where he went into, I'm Kenneth,
26:43 and all that kind of stuff,
26:44 and when he sold the movie in his interviews
26:48 and just really got in a character for it,
26:51 and such a ridiculous character, like, can I beat you?
26:55 Just stuff like that, really funny, I think.
26:59 I said when I seen the film,
27:00 he'll win that for best supporting actor.
27:02 I still feel he should.
27:04 However, I think, and I know where you think
27:09 it's gonna go, I think,
27:12 I don't think you think it should go where it's gonna go,
27:14 but I know you think where it should maybe
27:17 potentially have gone or will go,
27:19 but I think Mark Ruffalo might win it.
27:21 - I'd like that to happen.
27:24 He's certainly the surprise package out of all of them.
27:27 I don't think he was really meant to be up for it.
27:30 - He did great, he was blumen brilliant.
27:32 He was very good, some top tier swearing.
27:35 I'm always a fan of top tier swearing,
27:37 and this is, I would call it Glaswegian level swearing.
27:40 It's not British swearing or Scottish swearing,
27:43 it's Glaswegian level swearing.
27:46 He is brilliant.
27:47 I agree, I would like, well,
27:49 I mean, I think that Robert Downey Jr. is gonna win.
27:51 He's a hot favorite for Oppenheimer.
27:53 I hope he doesn't.
27:55 I think I'd like Ryan Gosling to win as well.
27:59 I mean, particularly, what I was most happy,
28:01 I have all of the nominations, I have all the shortlists.
28:04 What I was waiting for and what happened
28:06 was that "I'm Just Ken" got nominated
28:08 for best original song,
28:09 which I presume means that Ryan Gosling
28:12 will be performing live on the night "I'm Just Ken,"
28:15 which I'm gonna stay up for.
28:16 I never stay up to watch the Oscars, they're long and boring.
28:19 But for that moment, I think I might stay up
28:21 on that Monday morning to watch Ryan Gosling perform
28:24 "I'm Just Ken" at 2.30 in the morning, whatever,
28:26 with a gin and tonic in my hand.
28:28 That is absolutely phenomenal.
28:29 And if he does that, then I think he definitely deserves
28:31 the Oscar for best sports actor.
28:33 - What's your favorite musical performance at an Oscars?
28:36 'Cause I've got one, actually.
28:37 - I bet yours is, I should know what yours would be,
28:42 is it "Team America"?
28:44 - No. - Was that your favorite?
28:46 - It was Robin Williams performing "Blame Canada,"
28:48 so close.
28:49 - Oh, sort of that, yes, absolutely.
28:51 I forgot he did that.
28:52 Yeah, I'm gonna look that up on YouTube after this.
28:55 I totally forgot that even happened.
28:57 Robin Williams, hugely missed at events like this.
29:02 Amazing person, still makes me laugh to this day.
29:06 Tremendous comedian, massively, massively, massively,
29:10 massively missed by, I think, everyone
29:13 that ever existed, probably.
29:15 Best director, Julian, I could be pronouncing this wrong,
29:22 Justine Trier?
29:25 And that means- - Trier.
29:26 - Trier, okay. - Trier, yes.
29:28 - Martin, I could be pronouncing this wrong.
29:31 (laughing)
29:32 Scotts, is that Scottish?
29:33 (laughing)
29:36 - I think it's a town, yeah.
29:37 Scor-ke-ke.
29:38 - That sounded Spanish.
29:40 War, Chrissy Nolan.
29:43 Yorgos Lanthimos for "Poor Things,"
29:47 and Jonathan Glazer, not related to the people
29:49 who own Manchester United in any way, shape, or form,
29:52 or the zone of interest.
29:54 I can't comment on the zone of interest.
29:55 I haven't seen it, it's not out yet.
29:58 The rest, I pretty much can.
29:59 I'm a huge fan of him anyway.
30:04 I'm a huge fan of Scorsese.
30:06 I'm a huge fan of Christopher Nolan,
30:08 but I think in time, when people ask me
30:12 who their favorite director is,
30:14 he'll get in the top five for things he did
30:16 before "Poor Things," but Yorgos Lanthimos
30:18 is by far, in my opinion, the one that deserves to win it.
30:22 I think "Poor Things" was close to being the best film.
30:26 I prefer Oppenheimer slightly,
30:28 and I think the direction in Oppenheimer's very good,
30:30 but I just think the way that Lanthimos's films
30:33 are constructed are just brilliant.
30:35 I love "Killing of a Sacred Deer."
30:39 I absolutely love "The Lobster."
30:41 I think "Poor Things" is probably his best achievement yet
30:44 in terms of cinematic wonder, if you prefer.
30:50 "Killing of a Sacred Deer" is still my favorite by his,
30:52 but I'm very, very biased on that.
30:54 But I think he should win it.
30:56 I don't think he will.
30:58 I think we will see Christopher Nolan take that award
31:02 for like, how many Oscars has he got now?
31:04 A lot.
31:06 - No, this would be his first, I think.
31:08 - No way.
31:09 - Yeah.
31:10 - Gotta have him.
31:11 I'm Googling this.
31:12 We're doing the Google again.
31:13 We're just gonna- - We're doing Google.
31:14 He has been nominated, but he's never won an Oscar.
31:16 - That can't be right.
31:18 It is right.
31:20 - No. - Prove me wrong.
31:21 - Right, I'm gonna Google it.
31:22 He's got an OBE, no, CBE, sorry for saying it out loud.
31:25 - It's not CBE, but no Oscar.
31:27 - No Oscar.
31:28 No, I don't think, I believe in that.
31:32 Look, you tell me what you think should happen.
31:34 And if it looks like- - And you have a wee Google.
31:35 You have a wee Google.
31:36 - I am paying attention.
31:38 I'm Googling.
31:38 - I think that Christopher Nolan
31:40 will win his first Oscar for "Oppenheimer."
31:43 I don't want him to win.
31:44 I agree with you, actually.
31:45 I've been coming, going wee bit of this.
31:47 I think there's a shame that Alexander Payne
31:49 has not been nominated for the Holdovers.
31:51 It looks like they've put in Justine Trie,
31:53 and that's maybe a fault instead of him.
31:56 I mean, I was also like, see Greta Gerwig up there for Barbie
31:58 and I'd like to have seen Celine's song for "Past Lives."
32:01 I don't think Martin Scorsese should be there,
32:03 to be honest with you.
32:04 I think that that stands out for me as not being right.
32:08 But as it is, I agree with you.
32:10 I think that Yorgos Lanthimos out of that list,
32:12 I think "Poor Things" looks so incredible.
32:15 It's almost like the good bits from "Oppenheimer"
32:18 are like every single bit of "Poor Things."
32:20 Every bit of the frame in "Poor Things" is stuffed.
32:23 It must be an incredibly hard film to direct.
32:26 There's stuff going on all the time,
32:28 and I think it's an incredible achievement in direction,
32:31 in particular "Poor Things."
32:32 And I could see it maybe being split.
32:34 Like I've said it before, I'm not sure best film
32:36 and best director will go to the same film.
32:38 I thought it would be split between "Oppenheimer" and "Barbie,"
32:42 but now I think that it could be split
32:44 between "Oppenheimer" and "Poor Things."
32:45 Basically one way around or the other,
32:47 "Poor Things" could get best film or best director,
32:49 but I think one might get each of them now.
32:52 And I'd be delighted for Lanthimos to win.
32:55 Like you say, he's got a lot more films in him.
32:56 He will win a best director Oscar at some point,
33:01 even if he doesn't now.
33:02 - One more that I want to discuss before we go,
33:09 and it's the most important award of all.
33:14 By far, best original song.
33:17 We have "The Fire Inside" by Flamin' Hot.
33:23 - No.
33:24 - "I'm Just Ken" by Barbie.
33:27 - Yes.
33:27 - Not by Barbie, by Mark Ronson.
33:29 Andrew Wyatt, sorry, sung by Ryan Gosling.
33:33 - Barbie came into the real world
33:34 and composed her own music.
33:35 - It never went away by the American Symphony.
33:39 I'm gonna pronounce this wrong, I'm so sorry.
33:41 "Wazza", a song for my people from "Killers of the Fire Moon".
33:46 I think it's "Wazzazi", I think.
33:49 I'm really sorry if I got that wrong.
33:51 And "What Was I Made For" by Billie Eilish,
33:54 also from Barbie, which I think won the Golden Globe.
33:57 And if I'm honest with you,
33:58 it's just constantly always on like TikTok and Instagram.
34:01 I'm just, I'm not a huge Billie Eilish fan.
34:05 I know you are.
34:06 - I am.
34:07 - Which is just subjective.
34:08 Like I don't think she cares what this guy thinks.
34:11 Like she's not gonna be worried about what I think, trust.
34:15 But I do feel like, you know,
34:17 it would be almost illegal and offensive to everyone
34:22 if "I'm Just Ken" didn't win Best Original Song.
34:28 And I assume you're gonna agree with this.
34:30 - Yeah, I get the feeling, you know what?
34:31 I think 'cause it's been nominated,
34:33 it might just pit Billie Eilish for the Oscar.
34:35 'Cause I'm not sure, it's one of these things
34:36 that why bother nominating it
34:38 if it's not gonna win in a funny sort of way?
34:40 'Cause it's such a funny song.
34:41 Maybe they've done it so they can have that great moment
34:43 in the ceremony.
34:45 And maybe they've already asked Ryan Gosling,
34:47 listen Ryan, would you perform it?
34:48 'Cause if so, we're totally gonna shortlist it.
34:51 But it's gonna be Billie Eilish, isn't it?
34:54 It is.
34:55 - I think it will be Billie Eilish, yeah.
34:58 - Which means she will have won double the number of Oscars
35:02 as Nolan, because Christopher Nolan will then have won Oscar
35:07 and Billie Eilish will have won two.
35:09 So that'll be an interesting start.
35:11 - Unless Nolan and Oppenheimer totally cleaned up
35:13 and just went everything.
35:14 Even the ones that weren't nominated for,
35:16 they just keep getting up and going.
35:17 Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan.
35:20 Oh, who's won the best original song?
35:22 I'm Just Ken by Oppenheimer.
35:23 (laughing)
