00:00 Rice is still expensive for the families in some places in Bicol.
00:04 Its price is now reaching P75 per kilo.
00:07 First up is Bernadette Reyes.
00:10 Rice is now P67 in Nagas City.
00:15 But according to the Bantay Bigas group,
00:17 rice is now reaching P75 per kilo in other places in Bicol.
00:22 P60 is the lowest.
00:24 In Mindoro, a rice producing province, P58 to P60 per kilo of rice.
00:30 The government always says that our production is increasing,
00:35 but the price of rice is still high.
00:38 We expect that it will go down because our production is increasing.
00:43 We have importation.
00:45 In this store in Quezon City, P60 is the highest price of rice.
00:50 It's hard to buy rice because before,
00:54 if we bought just P1,000, it would be P1,300.
00:58 According to the Bantay Bigas,
01:00 the Department of Agriculture does not feel that the consumers
01:04 have solutions to lower the price of rice.
01:07 When they are building, they will arrange the post-harvest facilities,
01:11 they will arrange the cold storage.
01:14 They are already doing that.
01:16 They are not rooting out the reason why we are running out of food.
01:23 The Department of Agriculture says that the government is trying to help farmers
01:28 by providing rice, water and machinery
01:33 to increase the production of rice.
01:35 Last year, the Philippines recorded more than 20 million metric tons of rice.
01:40 Imported rice is expensive.
01:42 600 to 700.
01:45 The mandate of the DA is really to have more productivity in our farms,
01:51 to increase the local production of rice.
01:54 According to the Department of Agriculture,
01:56 because of the effect of El Niño, the production of rice can go down this year.
02:01 But the government is working on ways to ensure that the rice is sufficiently supplied in the country.
02:07 We're talking with Vietnam for the five-year framework agreement.
02:11 We are also diversifying the sources of rice beyond Vietnam and our neighbors.
02:18 Even canned sardines that are considered to be good for food are now expensive.
02:23 DTI has already approved two pesos or more for some brands.
02:28 DTI, a well-known canned sardines manufacturer, plans to launch Pinoy sardines
02:33 or a more affordable alternative for those who want to buy.
02:37 At present, it's available in bread. That's why we have Pinoy Tasty and Pinoy Pandesal.
02:43 But at the expense of the Canned Sardines Association of the Philippines,
02:46 it will take a few more months before it is launched.
02:49 But for now, they are looking for ways to lower the price of the Pinoy sardines launched.
02:56 We may be looking for new sources of tomato paste.
03:00 We also want to work on vegetables, our spicing and flavoring items from agricultural products like rice, pepper, etc.
03:14 This is the first news. Bernadette Reyes for GMA Integrated News.
