Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp praises the convincing display from his side as they thrashed Chelsea 4-1 in the Premier League
Transcript
00:00 Hi.
00:01 Evening, Ben, do you want to kick us off?
00:20 Yeah, sure. Jürgen, congratulations, you're in the Premier League win.
00:23 So many good aspects to the performance tonight,
00:26 you were the ones banging at it from the start, but what really stood out for you?
00:30 The performance, nothing else is there.
00:33 So it's...
00:35 Start, really good, super important.
00:41 So the story of the game is the story of the game,
00:43 but the story of the game could have been completely different
00:45 if we didn't start like we started, I would say.
00:47 So that's how it is, we always try, we don't do it always,
00:50 but we try to give a game a direction, and this direction was clear.
00:55 And obvious in the beginning.
00:57 And then we have chances, we miss them, we score goals,
01:00 should have scored more, missed the penalty.
01:03 Go in half-time and can show the boys when Chelsea came out,
01:09 when Chelsea played through us, why and where, and how we can do that even better.
01:15 But two or three situations where the press started with Djoko instead of Dom,
01:19 and then they pass around us and go through,
01:21 and then you have to do a lot of work to sort that out.
01:24 In that moment we could do that, but...
01:27 ..the game felt in the first half more dominant than it actually was,
01:34 possession-wise, and that's an interesting insight.
01:39 And then it was clear we have to do the right things again and again and again,
01:45 and that's what we did.
01:46 And then we changed, we maybe take tonight the two best performers,
01:50 they performed really well, but with Joey and Connor,
01:52 we take them off because they've played an awful lot of games now,
01:56 and we have Robbo and Trent on and they need rhythm,
02:01 so it's like you bring them, obviously we didn't concede because of that,
02:05 but that was the period when all of a sudden...
02:08 ..with Nkunku and stuff like that, when it all came through
02:13 and we had to defend slightly deeper and a bit different.
02:16 But then we controlled it again, and that's the most important thing.
02:19 It's not about that you get through, it's super convincing and with no problems,
02:24 your opponents are too good for that.
02:26 And that's why I'm super happy with the performance,
02:31 just because we had problems, we overcame them, and a lot of good moments.
02:37 I know you spoke about Connor in the build-up to the game,
02:40 but it's two man-of-the-match performances on the bounce now,
02:43 two assists, first off for Liverpool,
02:45 and I know even looking ahead to the Arsenal game,
02:48 you're factoring in that Trent's coming back from an injury,
02:50 but it's a nice performance to have, certainly, given the form...
02:53 There is no problem.
02:56 Two phrases, sorry, but it's a nice situation to have.
02:58 Yeah, there's no situation.
03:01 LAUGHTER
03:02 Yeah, it's just how it is.
03:05 So now we finally realised we had seven games in January,
03:10 with 11 days off in between.
03:12 I don't know how we fitted them in, but obviously we had to start 1 January and 06,
03:16 but they lost it in between.
03:19 And we couldn't have put the string of results together we had
03:22 without the boys, without the kids.
03:25 Without Kwanzaa, no chance, we have both left-backs out,
03:28 Trent out, midfielders out, so all these things.
03:31 Midweek we played with James McConnell on six and he played extremely well.
03:36 So these boys used the situation, and that's exactly how it should be in an idol world.
03:43 Now the next game is coming in four days, I have no idea who can play again,
03:47 because they looked quite knackered when I had a look in the dressing room.
03:51 Little back here, Makar on the knee, and knee on knee,
03:55 so nothing major, at least nobody told me that yet.
03:58 So it's all fine, we need them all, and it's not a phrase, it's exactly how it is.
04:04 And I'm happy for them that they all could perform the way they performed.
04:08 The next massive game is coming up already at Arsenal,
04:13 and, yeah, let's recover and go again.
04:16 Jürgen, is the attitude that this team shows, the relentlessness of it,
04:24 do you find that unusual?
04:26 I think...
04:30 - Does it surprise you? - No.
04:35 I would never take these kind of things for granted, to be honest.
04:39 Look, nobody spoke to me, even you didn't ask me after a United game
04:44 if I loved the attitude of this team.
04:46 We play 0-0 at home, it's like, "What's that? Football without goals?"
04:52 And stuff like this. The attitude that game was absolutely exceptional.
04:57 I heard tonight somebody saying to me,
04:59 "This was the best counter-pressing game for a long, long time,
05:02 "I have to watch it back."
05:03 I have to watch it back to judge that.
05:06 I love the United game for the counter-pressing, to be honest.
05:09 But it's like, attitude is not our problem, attitude is something we can expect.
05:13 Attitude is created by the culture, attitude is created by the crowd,
05:17 attitude is created by pretty much everybody around the team.
05:20 Attitude will not be the issue of this team.
05:22 This team is full of joy and full of excitement and all these kind of things,
05:28 that's really cool.
05:30 The problem is, a lot of other teams in the league are exactly the same,
05:35 not exactly the same, but have the same attitude,
05:37 and go for it and will not stop, and these kind of things.
05:40 If you ask me now, "Are you happy with that?"
05:44 If we finish seventh, no problem, big success,
05:47 then we can say, "This is wonderful."
05:49 But we have to, it's not only about what we can, we have to as well.
05:53 And that's what we do.
05:55 And, yeah, I said it before, I love pretty much everything about the team,
06:02 the best thing is that there's a lot of talent there and we mix it up,
06:06 there's a lot of potential there, and we mix it up with attitude,
06:08 and that makes quality, and the more often we do that,
06:11 the more often they have a chance to win a football game.
06:13 Thanks.
06:15 Jürgen, Colin Farley is a ridiculously good janitor,
06:19 did you always know that he would be this good?
06:23 Yeah, I know it for a while, because in the left ear is Pep Lindos,
06:27 in the right ear is Vitor Matas, and they're telling me...
06:32 I remember Pep sits in my office and says, "I put both hands on fire."
06:37 I loved him from the first day, it didn't need a lot of convincing.
06:41 The thing is that Conor showed up extremely good in the pre-season,
06:47 did extremely well at Bolton, comes back, looks top in pre-season,
06:52 and he's out for five months, four months?
06:58 Yeah, like these kind of issues only young people have.
07:03 But thank God time can sort it, in our age it will not get better,
07:09 but in that age group it gets better.
07:11 So since he's back it's a joy to watch him.
07:15 It's all credit to the academy, because I was sad.
07:20 Conor, Shurel, James, Bobby and the others, we don't have to mention them,
07:29 but it's top. Kate Gordon coming back after a long, long injury,
07:35 even longer, Stefan Bacic is still out, these kind of things,
07:39 it's not cool, but we were counting on Stefan before the season
07:42 because we knew how good he is.
07:44 But then he cannot play, that's obviously not helpful.
07:46 So, yeah, the academy is doing an incredible job.
07:50 Chris, thank you for that.
07:52 Jürgen, can you mention a few things about how unlucky Darwin is?
07:55 Yeah.
07:57 So, I reckon it's an insane first half, unbelievable,
08:03 just not to defend, outstanding, really good.
08:08 Why do we speak about Darwin?
08:11 Obviously because he has so many celebrations where he missed,
08:14 but his first game, since we count,
08:18 a player has hit the crossbar four times in a game,
08:22 and I think you are in his boots, how that feels.
08:25 So, missing a penalty, and you could see it at half-time,
08:29 he was really upset with himself.
08:33 Then missing the header from close range.
08:41 But then setting up a goal, he stays in the game.
08:45 There was never a striker who barely could walk,
08:49 and everybody asked, "What is he doing?"
08:51 And it became then the final picture of himself.
08:55 But this is the way it works, it's just crazy that he creates that many.
08:59 Imagine for a second he would take them all.
09:01 The numbers would be absolutely insane,
09:05 to the extent where you wouldn't understand it anymore, so it's normal.
09:08 For us it's important, because we score four goals,
09:11 who cares if we could have scored a fifth or a sixth, it's really not important.
09:13 We need to win football games.
09:15 And he will score, and he scored already.
09:17 And setting up then, in a really important moment, the fourth goal,
09:21 because if there's three, two or four, one, that's a big difference,
09:24 that makes him really the player he is for us.
09:28 And the rest will come, definitely.
09:31 Thank you very much.
09:33 Thank you, see you.
