Austin Corbett Speaks on Impressions of Dave Canales
Transcript
00:00 >> It's awesome for just initial reaction to the presser itself.
00:04 >> Yeah, obviously, having some relationship with Dan before,
00:07 kind of knew what his personality was like, so very easy to hear him talk.
00:12 And for Dave to get up there and just show his energy, his love of the game,
00:19 his passion behind what he does and what he wants to do here is awesome.
00:23 And it was palpable.
00:25 >> Have you had a chance to talk to Dave since?
00:26 >> Not yet, no.
00:27 >> No? >> No.
00:29 >> What do you think about him saying we need some more dogs in here, basically?
00:32 >> Yes, especially offensive line mindset, right?
00:36 Like you're in the trenches, it's dirty work.
00:38 And so to be able to carry that over in all positions,
00:41 I completely 100% agree with that.
00:43 That's what you wanna build a football team on.
00:46 That's the type of people you need in a winning organization.
00:49 Guys go out there, they're gonna win at all costs.
00:51 They're gonna do what they have to do.
00:52 They know their strengths, they know their weaknesses, and
00:55 they're gonna do what they can to win every single rep.
00:58 And the mindset you have to have is you have 11 one-on-one matchups.
01:03 And you have to do your one-eleventh, you have to win your matchup.
01:06 And if you lose, you have to take full responsibility.
01:09 Cuz ultimately, you are gonna lose.
01:12 It's the NFL.
01:12 Guys are getting paid too.
01:14 And so you gotta break it down into 65, 70,
01:17 however many plays you get in a game, and you have to win it one rep at a time.
01:22 >> Why do you think he's a good fit?
01:24 >> I think it's just to be able to come in here with that energy that he has.
01:29 And just from obviously the one interview that I've just sat through now,
01:33 [LAUGH] >> My deep knowledge,
01:35 deep analysis.
01:36 But talking to other guys that have been with him in Seattle and Tampa,
01:41 they just can't say enough about his love for the game and
01:44 his energy that he brings every single day.
01:46 >> What- >> Dave talked about-
01:47 >> There was some people that tell us
01:49 that maybe some of that was missing last year under Frank.
01:52 Is that accurate?
01:55 What did you see there?
01:56 And how important is that gonna be?
01:57 >> I think you obviously have two different people, right?
01:59 And people carry themselves differently.
02:01 People coach differently, have different styles.
02:03 And so when you have just two different styles,
02:06 it's very easy to compare and contrast.
02:09 But just like Dave and Dan were saying up there, it's all about now.
02:13 So just focus on today.
02:14 And what we saw in that press conference is these two guys who,
02:18 you already know, Dan loves this place.
02:20 And Dave's gonna come in here with that energy and
02:23 just make it about winning today.
02:25 >> Dave talked about adjusting the offense to the strengths of the personnel.
02:30 Do you think that happened enough last year?
02:33 And is that encouraging to hear?
02:34 And is- >> Yeah, I think for
02:37 any coach to be able to understand that every single football team's different,
02:41 every personnel is gonna be different.
02:43 And whatever, 12, 13, 11 personnel, whatever it is.
02:45 There's different plays that need to come out.
02:48 And everybody's athletic ability is different.
02:51 And so being able to exploit those things,
02:54 take advantage of people's bodies is gonna be huge.
02:56 And to be able to see what he did in his one year at Tampa,
03:00 I didn't play in either of those games.
03:03 But watching from the sideline especially,
03:05 just to see the way Baker was getting rid of the ball.
03:08 And I know Everhood's defense is tough, being with him in LA and
03:12 having to practice against it so much.
03:14 And for him just to be able to still create openings and to get wins there,
03:19 that's a credit to Dave and his abilities.
03:22 >> Austin, what goes through your mind when you hear your GM sit there and
03:25 say he wants dogs and he wants to make this a place people fear?
03:29 >> I was just kind of nodding my head in agreement there.
03:31 It's in the NFL, the athletic skill level is so
03:37 high that you're gonna have to find the advantages somewhere else.
03:41 Cuz everybody has the same talent, everybody's fast, everybody's strong.
03:45 And so it's gonna be the mental game of I have to break you in this game.
03:51 It might not happen the first, second, third, but
03:53 it's going to happen at some point in the game.
03:55 For my willpower to beat you, to get my block, to win my gap,
04:00 is gonna happen, receivers to get open, running backs to bring their own tackle,
04:05 or bring their own blocker, and make somebody miss and get it done.
04:08 That's that mentality every single play.
04:11 >> At 2.7 seconds, he said how critical that was.
04:14 I think you guys were near the bottom of the line, or Bryce was,
04:18 it's around 2/8 up or whatever.
04:20 How easy or difficult is that to adjust?
04:23 >> Ball's getting out quick, super easy to adjust.
04:26 I mean, that makes an offensive line job easy, right?
04:28 By the end of the day, watching championship games,
04:33 things are able to get done when you block forever too,
04:34 watching Pat Mahomes do what he does.
04:37 So as long as, whether the ball's getting out quick,
04:40 whether you have to hold it and create and scramble opportunities.
04:43 And if Dave's approach to be able to get through that read,
04:48 get back foot in the ground like you said, ball coming out.
04:50 I mean, that's awesome for a lot of men, can't ask for better, right?
04:53 >> I guess the following is,
04:55 how did that make you guys' job difficult in pass protection last year,
04:59 that it wasn't getting out that fast?
05:01 Or was it all worked together?
05:02 >> Yeah, it's all part of it, scheme wise.
05:04 And when you get some quick pass, it's a three step, five step, seven step drops.
05:09 We all know those, and so when the play's called, we all have an anticipation of,
05:13 okay, this is gonna be a deep shot here.
05:14 We know we gotta hang on a little longer, we know we gotta do this.
05:18 But ultimately, every single play, you gotta imagine it's gonna take eight seconds.
05:22 You gotta hang on to that ball, get it done, and win the rep.
05:26 >> The last two years you spent with Campy,
05:27 you've talked about your relationship with him before.
05:29 How hard was that to see him move on, and
05:32 what can you take from the two years that you did have with him?
05:34 >> Yeah, I mean, even three years, really, if I'm talking to Cleveland with him.
05:36 The longer you're in this business, the more numb you kinda get to it.
05:41 So very sad, very tough that he's gonna move on.
05:47 But we all got cell phones, so it's easy to stay in touch with him.
05:52 And it's not, it's just a part of the business, complete understanding.
05:56 But just an incredible coach who he's been in very successful.
06:01 He has a Super Bowl, he's a coach.
06:04 He's been on very poor teams, and for his ability to stay true to who he is.
06:10 And the amount of guys that he's coached over the years that I've had contact with,
06:14 and just to be able to continue to tell stories on how he's been the same person
06:18 for his 18 years in the NFL, whatever, is truly incredible.
06:23 >> Basically, the whole starting offensive line was there today.
06:27 Why is that important?
06:29 >> Well, there's three of us that are currently rehabbing in there, so.
06:33 >> [LAUGH] >> Easy job to get upstairs.
06:35 >> [LAUGH] >> And so, but I think that's kind of
06:39 a lot of offensive linemen just through here.
06:41 I think it's offensive linemen are just creatures of routine, creatures of habit.
06:46 It's where it's like when you're in this January phase,
06:50 trying to get our bodies back right, cuz we are so beat up from the season.
06:53 It's big injury or not, you just don't feel good.
06:55 So guys are here right now just trying to get their bodies back right,
06:58 feeling good before they really get into the bulk of their offseason training.
07:02 And whether they go wherever they are, but
07:04 guys that are here right now, it's just easy to pop upstairs.
07:07 >> What's your initial impressions of Dave when you met him?
07:10 I guess you met him probably.
07:11 >> No, I haven't yet, no.
07:12 >> Okay, but your enthusiasm, he tends to- >> I think that's just incredible,
07:16 cuz that's contagious.
07:18 And you can tell it's not fake either.
07:21 And I think that's the biggest thing with somebody that comes in that's full energy,
07:26 full passion.
07:27 It's very easy to see through it if it's fake.
07:30 And he's completely sincere, and it's true, and that's exactly who he is.
07:34 And from guys I've talked to around the league that have been with him,
07:36 that's exactly who he is.
07:37 >> All right, thanks, Corey.
07:39 >> Thank you all.
