A'Shawn Robinson Talks Joining the Panthers
Transcript
00:00So I was off my cake.
00:02Hey Sean, welcome to Charlotte.
00:03Congrats on the contract.
00:06I was just I was just curious.
00:09What was your relationship like with a lot of the staff?
00:12That's now here when you guys were in L.A.
00:14and how much of that factor in to your decision to come and join Evero
00:18and Cooley and all those guys here?
00:21Um, I think it played a good bitter part of that,
00:25you know, of ability, knowing the scheme, you know, coming from in L.A.
00:30Just being used to that.
00:31And I think that was just kind of like, you know, knowing the coaches,
00:35knowing them, knowing how I play and how and me knowing how they operate,
00:38how they want things done.
00:40I think that was very important to me.
00:42And, you know, and I know that they're honest
00:46and they're real about everything.
00:48And they want us they want, you know, guys to be on point
00:52and honest and real about everything that goes on and being accountable and stuff.
00:55So I feel that's like the biggest key.
00:57So that was the reason why I wanted to come here.
01:02From a size standpoint, you know, just looking at the size stuff,
01:06you would think you were a nose tackle, but from an athleticism standpoint,
01:09it seems like you match up well as like a four or five technique.
01:13Do you like having the versatility to be able to kind of be up front
01:16and play multiple positions?
01:19Yes, size point.
01:20I don't think I'm a nose.
01:22I never been a nose my entire career of playing football.
01:27But being able to move up and down the line is definitely great.
01:31Be able to play in those. Yes.
01:33But just strictly be a nose by off my size.
01:36I never got that off of that because, like you said, my size, my stature,
01:39my ability to be able to move athleticism,
01:42but being able to to do have those things was able to me
01:46to play multiple multiple positions and stuff,
01:49and which has helped me in my game.
01:53I feel like.
01:57The floor is open for anyone who wants to ask a question,
02:02I'll ask another Asian from a run defense standpoint,
02:07being paired up with Derek and shy.
02:11How good can this team be with stopping the run this year?
02:16We have great abilities to be great, you know, but it all starts now
02:20and we're focused on what we need to do now, you know, coming together
02:24and learning to learn about his characteristics.
02:27You know, for me, for coming in, because, you know, those guys
02:29been here for a while.
02:30So it's just everybody just, you know, building that bond, connection
02:34and understanding each other on and off the field and being able to,
02:37you know, hold each other accountable from the days we come in and working out
02:40and what we learn in the film room and everything.
02:42So that's what we're focused on right now.
02:46Thanks. You're welcome, sir.
02:49We go to Jeff Hawkins.
02:52Greetings, Sean, Jeff Hawkins from the Charlotte Post.
02:57I was just wondering, outside of your familiarity with with E.J.
03:02Why? Why, Charlotte?
03:03Why? Why did you choose to come to the Panthers?
03:08Why not? You know, it's a great screen, great team, great city.
03:14Like I love the South, you know, coming from Alabama.
03:17It's kind of, you know, feels like home.
03:20But coming to this scheme,
03:23I feel like it's it fits me perfectly, you know, playing it before.
03:28And, you know, being around these great players
03:31that's here already and stuff and being able to, you know, play, play together.
03:37You know, those things really played an effect for me.
03:41It's really being able to be around, you know, guys that want to win
03:45and guys that want to get things done and hold each other accountable
03:48and be great players on and off the field and through the city of heaven.
03:52And if it's community service or anything we need to do, it's just, you know.
03:56That's why it has a quick follow up.
04:00Coach, he's a he's a rookie coach.
04:02What's your first impressions of Canals?
04:04And how do you what do you think his style will be?
04:10I think he's great.
04:11I have no issues or problems with coach.
04:14I love him.
04:16He has a great personality and spirit towards the game and approach
04:19of how he wants to take care of business and how we should take care of business
04:22and how we need to be accountable in a brotherhood and everything that
04:27I stand for to being a great teammate.
04:29He stands for being a great coach.
04:30So why not, you know?
04:35Let's go, David Nguyen.
04:40Hey, Sean David Newton, ESPN dot com, welcome to Charlotte.
04:44Wanted to ask you, how did your next save it influence
04:49your career when your time in Alabama?
04:53Influence my career.
04:54He built the mindset, you know, coming from Texas.
04:58I didn't come from a big powerhouse school like your islands or DeSoto.
05:03I came from a smaller school, but I played those schools.
05:05But in my head, it was always dominate those schools,
05:09because when you're by yourself, you learn how to work harder.
05:13You know, push yourself to new limits.
05:16Then you get to those schools.
05:17Like when I got to Alabama,
05:18you know, you get around all these guys that have the same ability as you.
05:22Same everything.
05:23So now it's like, all right, now we're we're equal.
05:25So now it's not even about just being a powerhouse,
05:28it's about how can we make each other better and how can we improve each other?
05:32How can we hold up each other to to want to do things to be to be better,
05:37to to to be a better person on and off the field?
05:40Because, you know, that all leads into your life, you know,
05:43what you do off the field leads into what you do on the field.
05:45So if you ain't got stuff in order and you're not going to have stuff in order
05:49on the field, you're going to be all over the place
05:50and not understanding what you need to do.
05:52Call the plays, understanding the scheme and schematics of things
05:54and learning football, you know, because, you know, it's it's crazy.
06:00You know, when I first came in, a lot of guys didn't didn't know,
06:04you know, so much about X's and O's schemes and and know how to set things up
06:07and having a coach saving and him drilling things into us day in, day out.
06:12The coaches, the coaching staff that was there and Cochran, the work ethic
06:16that you have to, you know, come with every day shows you how to be accountable
06:21and to approach things like, you know, like a pro.
06:24So everything's about being a pro, being a professional, what you do.
06:28You don't do anything to be, you know, half halfway do it, you know, to be great.
06:33So having a coach saving, seeing how he takes care of business,
06:37how he approaches everything.
06:38I feel like that's how we are in the team.
06:42And when I was there, we approach everything and every day
06:44and I keep that into my life and I approach that everything I do now.
06:48And and even if I don't know something, ask questions, get into it, learn about it,
06:53get into now what you need to know and some more and what you can get around
06:57someone else that knows more than you to grow.
06:59That's all it's about.
07:00You know, learning from others.
07:03And I know you and Bryce didn't overlap, but
07:06you have you gotten to get to know him at all since you got here
07:10and you see any of those same qualities in him and anything that
07:14those things that will help him get past a pretty, pretty tough rookie year for him.
07:22The record didn't reflect how his his personality, you know, it.
07:29It wasn't didn't go the way he wanted to, but that's OK.
07:31You know, everything in this game does not go.
07:34Everyone is only one winner every year.
07:36Everyone else is losers.
07:38If you all if you look at the right way, I mean, there's only one Super Bowl team.
07:41So I think his his tangibles of having that, having the dog in them,
07:47you know, wanting to win, wanting to do things the right way.
07:51I see it in everything and talking to him and listening to everybody.
07:55It's kind of it's dope to understand, have a quarterback, you know,
08:00that's young and willing to put all the work in to be great,
08:03to become whatever he wants to become and have the potential
08:07to become whatever he wants to come because he's willing to put the work in.
08:10Appreciate it. Thanks a lot.
08:12You're welcome.
08:13Let's go, Mike.
08:15Hey, Sean, I'm back for another round.
08:18You brought up that there's 31 losers and one winner.
08:21You've been one of those winners before.
08:23What was special about that Rams team that you think like
08:27persevered throughout the ups and downs of that season?
08:30Um. Being steady, you know.
08:34The boat's going to rock either way and honestly, just stand level headed,
08:39you know, amongst their teammates, amongst everyone, you know,
08:44just understanding that there's ebbs and flows of the game.
08:47Now you can't get too high, can't get too low.
08:49Just play the game.
08:51You take it one step, one play, one rep, one, one install, one,
08:56you know, just learning everything, being a sponge, a true sponge
09:00and soaking it up and enjoying those moments
09:03because this doesn't last forever, no matter the year, the play doesn't,
09:07you know, accidents and injuries happen to people all year long in their life
09:12because outside of football, you still have to walk outside
09:14the building, be a man, and there's things that happen outside of that.
09:17So it's truly just understanding what you got ahead of yourself
09:22to really sacrifice your time, everything you want for your family.
09:28Like you want your family to have the best things in life.
09:32But right now you need to do the best thing for them right now
09:35is playing football because this is our career.
09:37We're making a career out of this, you know, and just truly being able to say
09:43it was a real brotherhood and holding everyone accountable.
09:47It wasn't about just being your friend, you know, being happy.
09:51We do all this extra stuff off the field, you know.
09:54No, it's about taking care of business on the field
09:58and knowing that there's no my bads, there's no none of this stuff is.
10:02I'm going to get it done.
10:03And if you don't get it done, we got to we got to find, you know,
10:07other other brothers that can get the job done.
10:10And it's not saying you can't get it done the next week.
10:12It's just in that moment.
10:15He might have been a better person or someone might be a better person
10:18than me to get the job done.
10:20And so just knowing that you do your role the right way,
10:23right time and everything, it takes care of yourself.
10:25So that was special about that time.
10:30A-Shawn, just following up on that,
10:33how much of that do you now share with this Panthers locker room
10:37or do you kind of say each team has to figure it out on their own
10:40or do you come in and say, hey, I've been to the top before.
10:44Here's how we got there.
10:48Each team is different.
10:49I feel like, you know, the goal is still the same.
10:52But you got to you know, you got to create those relationships
10:55and those bonds first before you can just tell somebody what to do.
11:00They don't know you.
11:01They don't trust you.
11:01You know what I'm saying?
11:02It's a lot that goes on in the game of football.
11:03So it's really just those relationships.
11:06So you can really sit down and talk to them about what what we got to do,
11:10you know, and you know, your other vets that came through.
11:14They know what's going on.
11:15It's just leading everybody the right way and leading yourself in the right way
11:19and showing it by examples and and just doing it day in, day out.
11:23So for me, that's not how I approach the game.
11:28I approach the game by just showing up, putting in the work
11:31and being able when there's questions to be asked or answers to be given.
11:37I make sure I give them or ask them or, you know, just I want
11:43it's no matter what NFL is a brotherhood players, no matter what team you're on.
11:47It's still a brotherhood.
11:48Even if there's there's beef or hate, no matter what.
11:52At the end of the day, you still want the best for anyone
11:55across the NFL, but as a team,
11:58you want to be able to achieve the higher goal of what you want.
12:03By building those relationships, sorry.
12:06All right. Any more questions for a Sean?
12:10All right. Thank you, Sean. Have a good day.
