Government set to spend £300 million on youth clubs - Chichester Shed first to open

00:00 What I'm announcing today is the opening of our first youth club in this phase of funding.

00:06 So we're spending £300 million as a government, opening youth clubs across the country.

00:11 And it's great to be at this first one.

00:13 But in this charge is £90 million for 140 facilities which are going to support 20,000 kids.

00:20 We know that kids actually want something constructive to do.

00:24 And we know that if they do, that that tackles anti-social behaviour,

00:29 and supports communities as a whole.

00:31 So that's why youth clubs are so important.

00:33 That's why we're building so many of them.

00:35 But it's not only what we're doing.

00:37 We're also putting money into guides, into scouts, into Duke of Edinburgh,

00:41 into mentoring, to summer work placements.

00:44 So everyone's got what works for them.

00:46 But youth clubs like this, they help people get new skills, they build confidence.

00:51 Today I've seen kids learning yoga and music and skateboarding.

00:56 It's about getting something that appeals to them, gives them a passion, something positive to do.

01:00 As a kid I really benefited from youth services.

01:02 And that's one of the reasons why I think they're so important.

01:05 I was a brownie, I was a guide, I was involved in my local youth club.

01:08 So I know first hand how that can build your confidence, give you social skills.

01:13 And really just take you to the next phase.

01:15 That's why I'm really proud to be part of funding,

01:18 where we're giving so many opportunities to young people.

01:21 There'll be 45,000 people every year by 2027 who will have an opportunity to go to a youth club.
