A horrific day at the office for Sheffield Wednesday
Transcript
00:00 Hello, Joe Crown and Alex Willow speaking to you from the seats where Danny Rill and
00:05 his coaching staff were an hour ago.
00:11 Where they watched a second half capitulation within 12 minutes, the complexion of Wednesday's
00:18 survival bid was turned on its head.
00:21 It certainly was.
00:23 Really strange game of football.
00:24 There was lack of equality throughout.
00:25 You could tell it was two teams that are struggling at the bottom of the table, very low on confidence.
00:32 That was apparent from the get-go.
00:35 But I thought that Wednesday probably edged it.
00:38 The situation that they're in, for what, 65 minutes of the game, they looked like they
00:45 were probably the slightly better side.
00:48 And then, yeah, 12 minutes where it all went to pot.
00:52 The first goal was a set-piece, which is obviously something that every manager hates to cut
00:56 seed from.
00:57 And then, yeah, after that it was like every time they got a chance, they scored.
01:02 Yeah, I mean, it really was every wave of attack just went past.
01:06 It was nightmarish, really, in the way it all unfolded.
01:09 There's no point really delving into the game too much.
01:13 I thought Wednesday started pretty brightly, certainly between the boxes and that red zone
01:19 that Danny Rill speaks so much about.
01:21 They looked like they were getting some joy in there.
01:24 And then I think what's almost as concerning for me as that 12-minute period was just how
01:32 calm and lacking in oomph the hour or so was before it all fell to pieces.
01:44 In a game that meant so much, it felt like neither team really concentrated more on not
01:49 losing perhaps than going out and winning.
01:51 Yeah, and you can understand that from a Bundesliga perspective because a draw is fine for them.
01:56 If they'd drawn today, it would have been an OK result.
01:59 Obviously, Wednesday needed to win, really.
02:02 It was billed as a must-win game and has been for weeks, not just recently.
02:07 And yeah, it felt like they were scared.
02:11 They were scared to try and force something to happen.
02:15 It was a clearance off the line from the back of the early doors.
02:21 A couple of chances, half chances.
02:23 We could have been unlucky not to score in the first few minutes of the game as well.
02:28 But yeah, it was just bumbling along, wasn't it?
02:32 And then that goal happened and they ran with it.
02:36 The change just came thick and fast.
02:38 But look, it was just back turns of fire for Christian Pedersen at left-back.
02:43 It was really in the thick of things from the word go.
02:47 And it's a big ask, isn't it, to come into a game like this when you've played so little football for such a long period of time?
02:54 Yeah, very true. He'll get the pelters.
02:57 But yeah, I think it's fair to say that he's certainly not alone in what happened on the pitch in front of us this afternoon.
03:05 Joe, where does it leave you and your mindset in terms of where Wednesday are at?
03:10 The deficit is now eight points.
03:13 And a lot of goal difference.
03:14 Yeah, so effectively nine points.
03:17 It's been more than that, but there are only 16 matches left.
03:20 And it's felt like a game that you look at and you go, right, if they're going to stay up, then they need three points.
03:26 Yeah, and obviously the situation being as it was, you know, you've got...
03:31 It could have been cut so small and instead what happened is you've gone up to eight.
03:37 And that is the case that it is now.
03:39 So yeah, Wednesday have got a massive mountain to climb.
03:43 And to me, it kind of feels like looting away on the relegation season last time around.
03:48 That was the day that I felt it was done.
03:51 And look, I know there are games left to play still.
03:54 But today, yeah, today feels like one of those days when you start to make peaceful up next.
04:00 If they could do what they did last time and take it to the last day, I think we'd both take it at this point.
04:07 Signing off from the John Smith Stadium as the ground staff continue doing their post-match bits and bobs.
04:14 Yeah, a chasing day for Sheffield Wednesday.
04:18 We'll get all the reaction.
04:20 We'll go again on Tuesday, the FA Cup down in Coventry.
04:23 As ever, keep the block to the start.
04:25 Don't go, don't UK.
