Assessing Sheffield Wednesday's Watford defeat
Transcript
00:00 Welcome to Vicarage Road, Sheffield Wednesday.
00:02 Again, on the wrong side of the result as they lost 1-0 to Watford here.
00:06 I think it was a cruel result really.
00:09 Wednesday, again, they haven't created that much, but they did create chances today.
00:14 And for the most part, they kept Watford at bay.
00:19 The goal from Espiria was their first proper chance, first proper shot.
00:25 And yeah, he was given too much time, but he finished it well.
00:29 And like I say, it just felt like a cruel blow for Wednesday.
00:32 There was something different about them today.
00:34 They felt the intensity was different.
00:36 The possession that they had was different.
00:40 They looked a bit more purposeful when they did have the ball.
00:44 And yeah, it was just positives.
00:46 It's obviously the first game for Danny Ruhl.
00:49 He got a great reception, by the way.
00:51 Wednesday fans in good voice just before the game and also all the way through.
00:55 But Danny Danny Ruhl to the tune of Boney M's 'Daddy Cool' was quite nice to hear.
01:02 And he was very appreciative of that.
01:04 I spoke to him after the game just now and he said it gave him goosebumps to hear his name sang from the stands.
01:11 And I think most people watching the game today will have seen those positives,
01:16 seen the things that were improved upon from Chisco's time in charge.
01:21 Wednesday did look like a different side.
01:23 It was much changed from the Huddersfield game.
01:25 I think that one felt very much like a reversion to the old guard,
01:32 whereas today it was pretty much an even split of the two.
01:35 And I think it's going to be really interesting to see where Wednesday go now.
01:38 He went back to a back four, which was obviously the way that Chisco started the season as well.
01:43 So he's going to get more time.
01:45 Danny will get more time to work with the players in training, see what he wants from each of them, see what each of them can give.
01:51 Yeah, disappointing today, but disappointing in a different way.
01:54 I think disappointing because they lost and didn't deserve to, rather than disappointed because they were bad.
01:59 And that is progress, I suppose.
02:01 So, yeah, we'll have loads on the Wednesday website, sorry, on the Star website in the coming days, on later today as well.
02:09 Spoke to Danny about the penalty decision, by the way, which was obviously a big talking point.
02:13 Massaba was brought down in the box by Jamal Lewis.
02:17 The referee pointed to the spot.
02:18 He then spoke to his linesman and they overturned that decision.
02:22 It wasn't long after that that Wednesday conceded what would ultimately be the winning goal.
02:26 So that was a big moment.
02:28 Danny said that he hasn't really seen it, but he did say it's the first time he's experienced a situation like that, where a penalty was given and then overturned.
02:35 Go back and watch the replay for yourself, see what you think and let us know on social media, because it was very 50/50.
02:42 I think that Wednesday can feel hard done too, just because of the way that it played out.
02:47 But ultimately, it's another game.
02:49 Wednesday's wait for a win goes on, the wait for a goal goes on.
02:52 They haven't scored since in Oldsbrough.
02:54 And things are very difficult for Sheffield Wednesday at the moment.
02:56 But with the new coaches in, with Danny Buell at the wheel, there's reason for hope, I think.
03:02 And if Wednesday can play like they did for large parts of today, then we might see a little bit of a resurgence.
03:08 So keep your eyes on thestart@co.uk and I'll speak to you soon.
03:11 Cheers.
