Chiefs' Offensive Line Issues: How Will Thuney's Absent Impact?

00:05 for the Kansas City Chiefs.
00:06 Over the years, they've had a dominant one.
00:07 Last week, they didn't have Joe Tooney
00:09 due to the pectoral injury.
00:10 What's the feeling inside the locker room here?
00:12 Or can you usually play with a pectoral injury
00:14 that serious?
00:15 - Here's the problem.
00:16 Even though it's not a tendon tear
00:18 and he doesn't need surgery,
00:20 it's very hard for any offensive lineman
00:22 to play through a pec
00:23 because you have to punch out and hold.
00:25 And especially hard since it's his right pec muscle strain
00:28 as a left guard.
00:30 As you know, you can't give up the A-gap.
00:32 And that's, Allegretti's not bad.
00:34 He did okay.
00:35 Almost pass rush is the bigger thing.
00:37 We had a silly little prop at sixth quarter
00:39 where we said 0.25 sacks for Betabuke
00:42 and he got a half a sack, you know,
00:44 going up against Tooney a little bit last week.
00:46 And so I don't think he's gonna be able to play this week
00:49 as much as he wants to.
00:50 - And how much, Doc, does that,
00:54 so if Pat Mahomes was injured, right,
00:56 that wildly impacts then the overall offensive grade
01:01 that you guys would give the Kansas City Chiefs?
01:03 We know offensive linemen are very important,
01:07 but how do you guys handle this injury then
01:10 when evaluating the full team's sixth quarter?
01:12 - Well, we have a formula that we plug in
01:15 in terms of the health.
01:16 And there's an offensive line formula.
01:18 We even go down to granular offensive pass game protection
01:21 versus run game abilities.
01:24 We even break it down.
01:25 We have some people that help us.
01:26 I mean, some coaches, including Norv Turner,
01:28 that helps us with some of the formulas
01:30 in terms of what we utilize for the output.
01:33 And yes, it does an effect,
01:35 but we even look at things like how good is Allegretti?
01:38 How good is the backup?
01:39 And quite honestly, we look at offensive line shuffle.
01:41 Like, everyone knows Patrick Mahomes if he's in or out
01:44 and the line moves,
01:45 but we love the cluster injuries
01:47 where you don't see it, obviously.
01:48 And a bigger effect is when, let's say,
01:50 the left tackle goes out, the left guard slides out,
01:53 the right guard comes over.
01:54 Even though it's one injury, you're affecting three spots.
01:57 That's not the case here for the Chiefs.
01:59 Allegretti's just being plug and play for Thune,
02:01 so it's less of effect than if there was a lot of shuffle.
