00:00 John, the word on the street is that the Lions might not be too aggressive in free agency,
00:04 even though everybody thinks that they should be to take that next step and reach the Super
00:07 Bowl a season from now.
00:09 What are your thoughts on this potentially being the case for the Lions as they enter
00:13 free agency?
00:14 Yeah, Vito, look, this football team is going to have natural turnover.
00:18 There's going to be some players that are going to eventually move on, some contracts
00:22 that might end up being prohibitive in regards to the salary cap.
00:26 So usually every year there's usually a 25 to 30 percent roster turnover, and many people
00:31 think that the Lions are going to go out there and potentially add a bunch of high-priced
00:35 free agents.
00:36 And I think Brad Holmes kind of put it out there that, you know, last year in regards
00:40 to signing David Montgomery, Cam Sutton, adding players with elevated salaries, he kind of
00:45 put it out there that maybe this year, if the fit's not there, they maybe might not
00:50 be as aggressive.
00:52 And his message in his season-ending presser was to trust the process, to recognize that
00:57 the Detroit Lions are looking for a certain type of player to help this roster.
01:03 And sometimes I know when teams are close, some people like myself or others may clamor
01:08 for the high-priced free agent in regards to the cornerback spot, edge rusher, and other
01:14 spots that could improve the Lions.
01:16 But this football team and Brad Holmes have shown that one other method that you can build
01:21 and utilize to keep a roster competitive is drafting and developing.
01:25 And this football team really has taken advantage of drafting well and adding a bunch of young
01:30 players that are hungry and fit the system.
01:33 So while I do think the Lions are going to make some additions via free agency, I just
01:38 don't think they're going to be ultra-aggressive in seeking the top high-end caliber free agents.
01:44 I think they like their system.
01:45 They're satisfied with how the results have played out over the last couple years.
01:50 And they recognize, and Brad Holmes said it directly, not everyone can play for the Detroit
01:55 Lions.
01:56 And I think when you have a good draft record, you can go out there and realistically sell
02:01 to the fan base, "Hey, some of these draft picks that we're about to make in 2024 can
02:06 contribute.
02:07 Just take a look at what the 23 class did, even in the postseason."
02:10 John, thanks for all the insight.
