Communities across Sydney celebrate Chinese New Year

Across Australia, communities are celebrating the lunar new year. This year marks the Year of the Dragon, a symbol of power and prosperity, and in Sydney, demand for dancers is high.

00:00 It's an ancient art form Kelvin Tran has been learning since he was a child.
00:07 Now the 24 year old leads a team of young dragon dancers himself.
00:12 I think it's really important to keep dragon line dancing alive,
00:15 especially with young people in the Western world.
00:18 I think that it's a really important way to keep young people engaged with their culture
00:22 and their heritage.
00:24 The group is particularly in demand this Lunar New Year.
00:27 This year being the Year of the Dragon, there's actually a lot of interest in having our dragon
00:30 dance team out.
00:35 Indie band Vinyl House is also excited to be celebrating their culture this New Year.
00:42 Korean Australian musicians infuse K-pop with jazz and R&B.
00:48 Since Australia is such a multicultural country, it's really amazing how we can sing both in
00:53 English and in Korean and we can incorporate that together to be a voice for Australia
00:59 but also for Korea.
01:01 Fan Dong Wang's striking dragon artworks are on display as part of festivities in Sydney's

01:07 The Shanghai born artist uses traditional Chinese techniques but with a modern twist.
01:12 The style is a bit like pop art but mixed with traditional Chinese carving techniques
01:23 so I call it a sculptural painting.
01:26 So that's my invention.
01:28 With a growing Asian community in Australia, Lunar New Year celebrations here are bigger
01:33 than ever.
01:34 Once confined to Chinatowns and capital cities, there are now major celebrations across the
01:39 suburbs and regional areas.
01:42 I think it's great that we're able to promote our culture and our art all over Sydney and
01:46 all over Australia.
01:50 Keeping traditions alive for generations to come.
