00:00 Malaysia needs to learn from Indonesia's success in enforcing the law and fishing regulations,
00:09 said former Minister of Agriculture and the Sabah Food Industry, Junce Wong.
00:13 The Wong statement is a follow-up to the China News Asia report,
00:17 where WWF Malaysia emphasized the issue of what is seen as the catch of fish
00:22 in this country's waters based on the numbers of government studies.
00:27 According to studies carried out by the Ministry of Fisheries in 2016,
00:31 the fish population in the sea has decreased by 88% across the country.
00:37 Wong said Malaysia should take the example of Indonesia's actions
00:41 by banning the use of low-lying ponds,
00:43 a practice that damages fish stocks and the industry's sustainability
00:47 because it takes up a large amount of marine life using ponds
00:50 that are pulled along the seabed.
00:53 In 2015, the Indonesian government imposed a ban on low-lying ponds
00:59 that are harmful to the marine ecosystem.
01:02 The ban was lifted in 2020 due to opposition from fishermen,
01:07 but was re-imposed a year later.
01:10 to the end.
