00:00Sisters in Islam has called for measures to remove the stigma around the use of contraceptives.
00:08The advocacy group said many women were discouraged from using contraceptives because of misconceptions.
00:14The group said many women are made to believe that contraception is a rejection of God's
00:18blessings or they have equated it to infanticide.
00:22Family planning advocate Dr. Kenny Kamal said many married women avoided using contraceptives
00:27because of inadequate sex education.
00:30He said respected community leaders should be involved in promoting family planning as
00:34their endorsement can lend credibility to family planning initiatives and help to mitigate
00:39resistance.
00:41Last month, the National Population and Family Development Board reported that more than
00:45one in five Malaysian women refused to use any modern contraceptive methods in 2022.
00:53Family board's chairman, Rohani Abdul Karim, said contraceptive use among reproductive
00:57age women remains low at 34.5 percent.
