00:00 Friends, family and local officials gathered outside Landin Kamara's house on Tuesday evening.
00:07 The 16-year-old boy was killed here in the southern city of Ziganchor as the police cracked
00:12 down on protests last week.
00:14 "To hear that a young man from the neighborhood was killed by the police who are supposed
00:19 to protect the population is truly shocking.
00:22 Those who committed these acts must be judged.
00:24 They must pay for this."
00:26 The human rights organization Amnesty International estimates that at least 60 people have been
00:32 killed in protests in Senegal since March 2021.
00:36 "They use live rounds against protesters.
00:39 This is an inappropriate and disproportionate use of force.
00:42 We have arrived at a point today where the Senegalese government has taken the country
00:46 to the same level as the most repressive regimes on the African continent.
00:51 The courts haven't investigated a single death from all the cases between 2021 and 2024."
00:58 The government insists that justice will be served.
01:02 "There must be inquiries to determine who killed who.
01:05 Just because there are police who are armed doesn't mean that these are the ones who do
01:09 the shooting.
01:10 We need to remain rational.
01:12 The Senegalese government wants transparency and justice, but there has to be a proper
01:16 process if we want true clarity."
01:20 As discontent grows after the presidential election was delayed, ECOWAS, France and the
01:26 United States have called for Senegalese authorities to show restraint.
