Alex Millers' take on a monstrous Sheffield Wednesday away win at Millwall
Transcript
00:00 Hello, as you can see I'm stood outside Millwall Football Club, The Den.
00:05 I think without any fear of hyperbole I can describe one of the best away performances I've seen from a Sheffield Wednesday side.
00:14 First half, turgid, really really stodgy, neither team able to get anything going.
00:19 It was nervy, I think both sides knew what was on the line.
00:22 Wednesday of course able to cut the deficit on Millwall to four points and that first safety spot.
00:28 It told in that first half an hour and it was opened up by Anthony Massaba out the starting line-up.
00:35 For a fair bit of the last three or four games, having been a near ever present for Danny Ruhl,
00:44 he started and he made the difference, a little shimmy, twist and turn, a fantastic cross.
00:52 It's a criticism of Massaba's that he gets himself into some very good positions but his final product maybe is lacking in moments.
00:59 It certainly wasn't. As he opened up that game and E.K. Ugbo again lurking out the back post,
01:06 got his third Owls goal, I think a lot of people were looking at his signing.
01:10 When he arrived, having finished up at Cardiff City, he'd only scored four goals for Cardiff
01:16 and there were people wondering whether he would be able to hit the back of the net.
01:19 Well, his goals have helped win two games and six points, Sheffield Wednesday so far.
01:24 So all good on that front.
01:26 And then the second goal for Wednesday, ten minutes later, Barry Bannon, just for the moment of majesty really.
01:34 We've seen that little slip through down the left so many times across the two divisions in the last couple of scenes.
01:40 It's really coming to the fore and he's slid in, Massaba himself, and again those question marks over Massaba
01:48 in the key moments, what a finish it was to get past Sirkic in the Millwall goal.
01:54 From there the tide turned in terms of the feeling inside the stadium.
02:01 It's quite angry, very angry indeed. We know the passion of the Millwall fans is fated and they began to turn.
02:10 But that second half, I think, there was a real rally from the crowd and Millwall threw everything at Wednesday.
02:16 Who scrapped and clawed their way to a 2-0 win, got the clean sheet and a very satisfactory afternoon indeed.
02:23 The deficit now cut to four points with 14 games remaining.
02:28 Sheffield Wednesday are well and truly in this fight.
02:31 QPR won against Bristol City, which is a bit of a fly in the ointment.
02:35 But this hasn't traditionally been a happy hunting ground for Sheffield Wednesday.
02:40 And to get that win feels like a very big moment indeed.
02:43 This is the first of a four-game run that I think a lot of people are looking at.
02:47 Just wondering whether on the other side of these four games we'll know whether Wednesday are going to stay up or not.
02:53 Or certainly give themselves every chance of staying up or not.
02:57 It's a big few games, shall we say.
03:02 It's Bristol City next, at Pillsborough, followed by the trip to Rotherham United, then Plymouth at home.
03:12 This has been a very good start to that quartet of matches.
03:15 Alex Miller, reporting for the Sheffield Star.
